■ Diamond<br />
Diamond made from carbon has low afinity to non-metals, which<br />
brings excelent adhesion resitance. Diamond also has excelent wear<br />
resistance due to its highest hardness. However, diamond was not<br />
appropriate material for cuting tools because of its low toughness.<br />
PCD is a material which solved the issue of strength without<br />
sacrificing diamond's advantage by sintering micro grain diamond to<br />
generate polycrystal condition. PCD can machine non-metals at<br />
higher speed and show beter adhesion resistance than carbide that is<br />
generaly used for non-metal machining. Great improvement in<br />
eficiency can be expected for aluminum machining, which is<br />
increasing rapidly recently.<br />
■ Cermet<br />
has two kinds of cermet: TiC-TiN Cermet and Nitride Cermet.<br />
TiC-TiN Cermet has been developed by adding titanium nitride to the<br />
converntional cermet to achieve much finer structure. TiC-TiN Cermet<br />
has improved hardness and shows excelent high-speed cuting<br />
performance. Nitride Cermet is tough and has a special aloy structure<br />
mainly composed of titanium nitride, instead of TiC. Compared to<br />
carbide, cermet is beter in oxidation resistance and thermal<br />
resistance and can perform cuting at higher speed. Moreover, cermet<br />
brings beter surface finish because of beter adhesion resistance<br />
which is brought from its low afinity to ferous metals.<br />

T3N has the best durability against abrasion<br />
and deformation of al cermets. T3N works<br />
best in high speed finish applications.<br />
Z15 is PVD coated with TiN on T15 and<br />
further improves wear resistance and surface<br />
finish.<br />

T15 is a multi-purpose cermet with welbalanced<br />
durability against abrasion and Semi finish, finish<br />
breakage. Its low afinity for work material<br />
prevents build-up edge.<br />

C7X is a cermet with superior thermal shock resistance.<br />
Possible to cut dry or wet and improve the tool life due to<br />
excelent shock resistance. C7Z is PVD coated with TiN on C7X<br />
N20 and N40 are very tough cermets that contain titanium<br />
nitride as main component, which has excelent toughness. N20<br />
and N40 show good perfomance at low cutting speed range,<br />

◆Feature of Y-axis Control Toolholder<br />
Usualy, the turning operation on a CNC auto lathe has the work material coming through the bar feeder into the<br />
guide bush is turned by the each tools on the holder, equipped on the gang tool post, with moving up and down the<br />
post verticaly. That is, the position of cuting point locates at the top of the material. However, this Y-axis control<br />
holder realizes changing the cuting point from top surface to side surface of the material, so that this new toolholder<br />
provides the beter chip control since the chip fals down to the botom of CNC machine without sticking on the<br />
working material.<br />
◆Why is it nemed for Y-axis Control Toolholder<br />
Generaly, gang post type CNC auto lathes controls three axes. The firlst is X-axis for lifting up and down the tool<br />
post. Secondly, Y-axis is for sliding the tool post the use of choosing the tool holder. The last one is Z-axis for<br />
feeding the work material form the guide bush. It was common sense to control X-axis and Z-axis for turning<br />
operation because Y-axis should only control the choice of the toolholder. But, Y-axis control holder is designed for<br />
changing the cuting point form top surface of the material to side surface.<br />
This means that the turning operation is controled by Y-axis and Z-axis. Therefore, the chip breaker of the insert on<br />
this holder is faced to the ground, so that chip may drop down to the ground.<br />

① The number of this toolholder on the gang type CNC lathes is available only for one or two. Even equipping two<br />
tool holders, they can not be setled side by side to avoid the crash of the tools.<br />
② Ensure the clearance and set up position concerning Y-axis control toolholder's over hang length in case of<br />
changing tools.<br />
③ The alowable work material size is depends on the relation between original toolholder post's over hang length<br />
and equipped part number of Y-axis control toolholder. Check the next page reference table and ensure the<br />
clearance.<br />
④ The available size of work material is varied depending on this toolholder's position for in the tool post. Check the<br />
next page reference table and ensure the clearance.<br />
⑤ NTK is free from the duty of the programming of CNC automatic lathes Y-axis control. Please consult to CNC<br />
lathes manufacturer if necessary.<br />

TOOLING SYSTEM FOR CUT OFF<br />
The range of NTK SS tools for cut-of are available with widths of 3 mm or less. They can meet al sorts of cut-of<br />
operations especialy for smal parts.<br />

Indexable insert toolholders for cut-of applications with shank sizes ranging from 7 mm to 25 mm, which<br />
eliminates re-grinding.<br />
Can be adjusted for almost al CNC automatic lathes or smal type CNC lathes.<br />
The shape of tools are selectable for gang tooling type tool post or turet type tool post.<br />
The cut-of widths range from 0.6 mm to 3.0 mm.<br />
The shape of the cuting edge keeps the centre boss to a minimum.<br />
Larger lead angle of the cuting edge, sharp corner radius, and precise centre position control eliminates the<br />
center boss.<br />
Micro grain carbides, ZM3, QM3, VM1 and TAS, which provide both excelent sharp cuting performance and<br />
toughness, are used. These materials guarantee stable and long tool life.<br />

CTP type (0.7 mm to 2.0 mm) is recommended for machining a narow width.<br />
CTP and CTV-A/B types are recommended for machining that requires sharp cuting performance.<br />
If the standard inserts cannot meet the requirement, it is recommended to grind a cuting edge and<br />
chipbreaker onto the CTP20FR/LS insert in the same manner as a brazed cuting tool and atach them to the<br />
CTPR/L type tool holder.<br />

SS TOOL: SELECTION TABLE FOR BORING<br />
NTK SS tools for boring include smal bore tools with a minimum machining diameter of 5 mm, boring tools which<br />
enable machining from the back of the inner diameter, tools for inner grooving, and those for threading. These utilise<br />
indexable inserted tools which meet a variety of requirements in boring operations for smal parts.<br />
■ Features of the SS Tool for Boring<br />
● Indexable insert boring for machining inner diameter of 10 mm or less (minimum machining diameter: 1mm, 2<br />
mm, 3 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, etc.).<br />
● Various extra hard shank that have excelent durability against chater for machining of smal internal diameter or large overhang lengths are prepared.<br />
● An indexable boring bar is available for machining a step inside an internal bore.<br />
● 75°and 80°rhombic inserts with high point strength and triangular inserts with three cuting edges are available.<br />
● The insert material type is selected from micro grain carbides, ZM3 and KM3, which ensures both sharp cuting<br />
performance and toughness. Cermet material ofers high speed cuting performance and excelent surface finishes.<br />
● Two types of chipbreakers are available; a ground chipbreaker which ensures excelent cuting performance<br />
and a molded chipbreaker which ofers a large area for cuting chip disposal. A chipbreaker with which chip<br />
control are discharged in the forward direction is also available.<br />
■ Guide to Efective Use<br />
1.Boring holder has a long protrusion amount (overhang amount), and, there is a limitation of the shank size<br />
depending on the hole diameter. Therefore rigidity is insuficient and deflection or chatering may occur with<br />
a litle cuting resistance. So please keep in mind the folowing points.<br />
1) Select the holder which is as large as possible within the internal diameter of the workpiece to be machined.<br />
2) Set the overhang amount as smal as possible.<br />
3) Since the insert is smal and is easily chipped with the smaler holder, the feeding and cuting amount<br />
need to be smaler.<br />
Although the strength of the cuting edge increases when the nose radius of the insert increases, the<br />
resistance wil be larger and chatering may occur. Therefore, select the appropriate radius.<br />
We recommend carbide shank with higher rigidity for machining long cut of amount.<br />
2. Maximum overhang amount<br />
Steel shank → 4D Carbide shank → 6D * D = Boring bar diameter<br />
3. Insert shape<br />
< Triangle ><br />
This type has the smalest cuting resistance and litle possibility of causing chatering. It is often used for<br />
finishing, but not suitable for machining with heavy load.<br />
< Rhombic ><br />
This type is stronger than the triangle insert and can be applied to profiling or machining of the botom<br />
surface of the bore.<br />
< Insert with Ground chipbreaker ><br />

1. To use extra hard tool product.<br />
In accordance with the Product Liability Law (PL law) that has been in efect since July 1, 1995 in Japan, we afix<br />
warning labels or caution labels to the packages of the products which are covered by the law. However, we do not<br />
afix specific caution labels onto the tool itself. Therefore, please read this leaflet before using carbide tool products<br />
and carbide tool materials. In addition, we ask you to inform your operators of the content of this leaflet as part of<br />
your safety training.<br />
2. Basic features of extra hard tool materials<br />
2-1. Meaning and usage of terms in this leaflet<br />
Carbide tool material: Generic name for tool materials such as carbide, cermet, ceramic, CBN sintering material<br />
and diamond sintering material.<br />
Tungsten carbide : Tool material which is mainly made of WC (Carbonized tungsten)<br />
Carbide : Abbreviation for carbide tool materials, or the abbreviation for tungsten carbide in the narow sense.<br />
Carbide tooI : Generic name of tools which are made of carbide tool material<br />
2-2. Physical characteristics<br />
Appearance: Each material is diferent. Example: Gray, black, gold color, etc. Odor: None<br />
Hardness : Carbide and cermet: HV500 to 3000kg/mm 2 , Ceramic : HV1000 to 4000kg/mm 2<br />
CBN sintering material : HV 2000 to 5000 kg/mm2, Diamond sintering material: HV8000 to 12000kg/mm 2<br />
Gravity: Carbide: 9 to 16, cermet: 5 to 9, ceramic : 2 to 7, CBN and diamond sintering material 3 to 5<br />
2-3. Component<br />
Carbide, nitride, carbonitride, oxide such as W, Ti, Al, Si, Ta, B, and materials that contain Co, Ni, Cr, Mo, etc. in<br />
addition to those compounds.<br />
3. Cautions for handling carbide tool materials<br />
・Carbide materials can sometimes be quite fragile, although they are normaly very hard. The materials may be<br />
damaged by sharp impact or excessive tightening.<br />
・Since carbide materials have high specific gravity, care should be taken when handling large products or large<br />
amounts of the products which are made of those materials.<br />
・Carbide materials have diferent thermal expansion ratios from other metalic materials. Therefore, cracks may<br />
occur in the product after shrinkage fit or cold shrinkage fit because the temperature for use is significantly higher<br />
or lower than the specification temperature.<br />
・ If the carbide material has corosion due to liquid for grinding, lubricant or water, etc., the strength of the material<br />
wil be deteriorated significantly. Be sure to store the material where it wil not come in contact with liquids or water.<br />
4. Cautions for machining carbide tools<br />
・Carbide tools may lose strength significantly depending on the surface condition. Be sure to use diamonds for<br />
grinding.<br />
・Carbide tools may generate dust during grinding. If you inhale a great deal of the dust, it may afect your health.<br />
Please make sure to have equipment for disposal and wear protective devices such as a mask, etc. If the dust<br />
comes in contact with your bare skin gets into your eyes, wash thoroughly with water.<br />
・When grinding the carbide material or soldered material, heavy metal component wil be included in the waste<br />
fluid. So, make sure to dispose of the waste fluid properly.<br />
・When regrinding carbide tools, do a post check to be sure that no cracks have occured.<br />
・If you use a laser or electric pen, etc. to mark the carbide material or products, it may cause cracks. Do not make<br />
markings at places where stress wil be applied.<br />
・If electric discharge machining is conducted on the carbide material, remnant cracks may occur on the surface<br />
which cause the material to weaken. Be sure to remove any cracks by grinding, if necessary.<br />
・When soldering the carbide materials, if the material temperature is much lower or higher than the melting<br />
temperature of the soldering material, it may cause defluxion or breakage of the product. Be careful of the<br />
temperature.
