Of Lara St. John’s 2001 recording of Bach’s two solo violin concertos and the double violin concerto with her brother Scott, American
BEETHOVEN: Missa solemnis, Op. 123
This major work of the sacred repertoire, high on the list alongside Bach’s Mass in B minor and the Mozart Requiem, is Beethoven’s
longest work and assuredly the one that demanded the most work. The composer even considered the Mass his finest work. Philippe
Herreweghe shares this opinion, and judges the Missa solemnis to be one of the apogees in the history of classical music. With four
superb soloists and a refined chorus and orchestra, Philippe Herreweghe invites us to a thoroughly transcendental experience.
ELGAR: The Apostles, Op. 49
BuZZ aLErT
This new release presents the oratorio planned to open the trilogy, the lesser-known and under-served work The Apostles, in a
performance The Guardian described as “revelatory.” This retelling of Christ’s Passion from the viewpoint of His followers features
extensive and effective use of leitmotivs and choral writing that is arguably an advance on that of Gerontius, with the work’s closing
section — depicting Christ’s Ascension to heaven — thought to be one of the most poignant ever written.
The performance benefits from extensive research by Mark Elder, including study of a proof copy of the vocal score that he matched
with what Elgar himself conducted in 1921, reinstating the semichorus of nine male voices, sung here by an ensemble Elder specially
selected from the Royal Northern College of Music.
This recording is probably the first — since Elgar conducted The Apostles on September 7, 1921 at the Three Choirs Festival — to
incorporate Elgar’s intentions at several points in the oratorio. Elgar included a part for a shofar, an ancient Hebrew instrument made
of ram’s horn. In most performances modern instruments imitate this, but this recording features a genuine shofar player.
Giuseppe Tartini was a legend in his lifetime, and one of the most influential
figures in the golden age of the baroque era. Through the performance of
violinist Luigi De Filippi on this debut CD, we catch a glimpse of Tartini’s real
expression: the intense and intelligent face of a man who, although not exactly
oriented towards the future, all the same moved decidedly away from the
baroque era.
CORIGLIANO: Clarinet Concerto • CARTER: Clarinet Concerto
A tribute to American music! This disc presents an opportunity to sample
some of the most up-to-date American music, with two masterpieces in the
concertante genre: the clarinet concertos of Elliott Carter and John Corigliano.
Presented here by leading interpreters of this music, these two pieces are
emblematic of the rich stylistic diversity of the American continent. John
Corigliano’s Clarinet Concerto of 1977 showcases the soloist’s virtuosity. It is
a highly sensitive work in which the clarinetist plays the role of a valiant hero
weathering the storm: the tumultuous, tempestuous material of the orchestra.
The purely melancholy power of the music sometimes recalls the most
moving moments of his Violin Concerto, which served as material for François
Girard’s film The Red Violin (Oscar® winner for Best Film Score, 1999).
A different style and a different way of introducing the narrative is found
in Elliott Carter’s Clarinet Concerto, composed 20 years later in 1997. This
piece gives the impression of a veritable musical dramaturgy, in which each
instrument is treated individually. The composer also treats the concerto
itself in a new way, since he sets up an alternating dialogue between the
soloist and each of the instrumental groups, which are independent of each
other and laid out in a semicircle. The style of the work is characterized by
both virtuosity and precision in the articulations and the accents. Elliott
Carter, whose 104 th birthday is celebrated this year, is unquestionably one
of the most inventive composers of his time.

colorful, beloved English music in brilliant HDCD sound. The Kansas City Symphony garnered tremendous critical acclaim for their
Betsy Jolas’ father, poet and journalist Eugene Jolas, founded and edited
the magazine Transition, which featured the greatest names of literature,
painting, and music — notably James Joyce, whose entire Finnegans Wake
came out in serial form under the title “ work in progress.” Thanks to her
family background, Betsy Jolas was initiated at an early age to words
and the recitation of words, and it was through her enthusiasm for the
human voice that she was later able to temper her participation in the
post-Webernian adventure of the immediate after-war. Thus, although
she followed the fortunes of Pierre Boulez’s Domaine Musical in the
’60s, she was more a “fellow traveler” of serialism than an unconditional
disciple. An avid contemporary music enthusiast, Géraldine Dutroncy’s
encounter with Betsy Jolas in 2007 gave birth to a series of concerts
devoted to her piano work.
Luciano Pavarotti: tenor
Music from Verdi, Donizetti, Puccini, Di Capua, De Curtis and Leoncavallo
This disc contains an overview of some of Pavarotti’s most famous and
beloved recorded opera arias and songs, opening with a universal favorite,
“La donna è mobile” from Rigoletto, followed by “Amici miei” from Donizetti’s
comedy La figlia del reggimento. This aria brought down the house at
Pavarotti’s Metropolitan Opera debut in 1972. Having delivered nine faultless
high Cs in this one impossible aria, he received a record 17 curtain calls.
“Che gelida manina” from Puccini’s La Bohème shows Pavarotti in one
of his signature roles; it would remain a standard throughout his 40-year
career. The disc also features selections by Donizetti, Verdi, and Leoncavallo,
climaxing in “Nessun dorma” from Puccini’s Turandot, which he had sung
at the World Cup in Italy in 1990.
Luciano Pavarotti: tenor
Music from Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, De Curtis, Mozart, Massenet and Tosti
Although famous for his starring roles in the most familiar operas of Verdi and
Puccini, Luciano Pavarotti had a wide range of repertoire outside opera. This
disc gives an introduction to the great tenor in a range of roles and genres.
Verdi is featured with the lyrical aria from Luisa Miller, the opening ensemble
from La traviata, his blending in the Kyrie Eleison from the Requiem, and the
way in which he could bring down the house with an aria sung in recital to
piano accompaniment (“Di quella pira”). His mastery of the “bel canto” style
of Italian singing is showcased in Bellini’s operas I Capuleti e i Montecchi and
I Puritani, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and La figlia del reggimento, and
Rossini’s stirring Stabat Mater.
The gorgeous Italian tradition of Neapolitan song is heard in Pavarotti’s
interpretations of “Non ti scordar di me” (“Don’t Forget Me”) and Tosti’s
“Aprile.” Pavarotti surprised the opera world by his successful forays into
Mozart in the opera Idomeneo and Massenet’s French opera Manon. Finally,
his moving way with religious music is shown in Bizet’s “Agnus Dei.”

Luciano Pavarotti: tenor
Renata Scotto: soprano
Mirella Freni: soprano
Gundula Janowitz: soprano
Montserrat Caballé: soprano
Fiorenza Cossotto: mezzo-soprano
Music from Verdi, Donizetti, Mozart and Bellini
This disc presents Pavarotti in duets with several of the great ladies of opera.
Renata Scotto was noted for the beauty of her voice, her intelligence, and total
immersion in the Italian operatic idiom. Pavarotti had sung Rigoletto with her
in Florence in 1966, as heard here, and a year later Lucia di Lammermoor in
Turin, again represented on this disc. One of his great early triumphs onstage
occurred opposite Scotto in Rome in 1969, and she would remain a frequent
colleague throughout the years.
Also on this disc, Mirella Freni is heard in characteristic selections from
operas by Donizetti and Bellini. German soprano Gundula Janowitz is a
perfect match in Mozart’s Idomeneo, and the disc is rounded out with duets
with the legendary soprano Montserrat Caballé in Verdi’s Luisa Miller, and
the great mezzo Fiorenza Cossotto in Donizetti’s La Favorita.
Luciano Pavarotti: tenor
Music from Beethoven, Bellini, Liszt, Mascagni, Donizetti,Tosta, Respighi,
Verdi and Schubert.
With one exception, all the numbers on this recording are from the non-operatic
repertoire for which Pavarotti was famous on the recital stage, a venue far more
intimate than the opera house. The earliest selection is Beethoven’s moving
“In questa tomba oscura,” the lament of a forsaken lover. Sorrow also pervades
a song by Bellini, and “Pace non trovo” by Franz Liszt. The mood then lightens
with Mascagni’s “Serenata” and the rollicking “Il barcajuolo” of Donizetti.
The Neapolitan style is further exemplified in selections by Tosti and Bixio.
More songs by Bellini are followed by three of Ottorino Respighi, one of
the few Italian composers more famous for his orchestral pieces than his
vocal works. A famous aria from Verdi’s opera Il trovatore is surprisingly
transformed into a recital song with piano accompaniment, and the program
concludes with Schubert’s universally beloved “Ave Maria.”
This CD showcases the spectacular voice of American soprano April Fredrick.
SOMM first heard her in concert singing the songs of Ivor Gurney, which she
studied closely as part of her MMus in Vocal Performance at the Royal Academy
of Music. The label unhesitatingly recommended April to David Curtis,
conductor of the Orchestra of the Swan, who enthusiastically engaged her for
several concerts. This recording, which took place during a concert at the Civic
Hall in Stratford last year, was her debut with the Orchestra of the Swan.
Orchestra of the Swan are becoming a favorite of classical radio stations
across the US, and their performances are regularly heard on the nationally
syndicated program Performance Today on over 260 stations nationwide. Their
discs have been named “Disc of the Month” and “Best of the Year” at WFMT
Chicago, “Disc of the Week” at WETA Washington DC, and they are perennial
favorites on WQXR New York. The orchestra has received rave reviews and
major features in the New York Times, Washington Post, American Record Guide,
With the final volume of SOMM’s four-volume series of the complete piano
composer’s piano music. Like most of the repertoire on volumes 1–3, this
music was recorded in the sumptuous acoustic of Birmingham’s Symphony
This year is the 50 th anniversary of John Ireland’s death, and he has been
celebrated far and wide, both during the BBC Proms and extensively through
the press and BBC Radio. Recording Ireland’s complete œuvre for the piano
has been enormously rewarding, and also gave SOMM the chance to discover
and add a few premieres along the way — on this CD, the instrumental
version of “The Epic March.”

Berg, Webern, and Schönberg all inhabited a borderland between tonality
and atonality. This CD from LAWO Classics is entitled Früh because the
works date from an early period in the career of each of the three composers,
and they are extraordinarily beautiful. A break with tonality is imminent, but
the music is still firmly anchored in the tonal tradition. The songs are seldom
performed, and there are few recordings of the material. Thus, it is all the
more satisfying to present Grammy® nominees Marianne Beate Kielland
and Nils Anders Mortensen with this magnificent late Romantic repertoire
(2011, Best Classical Vocal Solo).
BACH: Concertos and Chorale Preludes
Bach on the Silbermann cathedral organ in Arlesheim, Switzerland,
performed by Oslo Cathedral organist Kåre Nordstoga! Andreas Silbermann,
brother of the more famous organ builder Gottfried Silbermann, originally
built this organ. The cathedral’s acoustics are superb, and although the organ
has been rebuilt over the years, it still has the unique warmth and clarity
of sound that was the hallmark of the baroque masters. On the first of the
two CDs, we find all of Bach’s transcriptions for organ. Three are Bach’s
arrangements of violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, and Prince Johann
Ernst of Saxe-Weimar originally wrote two others. He died at age 21, and
is perhaps best remembered by music historians because Bach — while he
was organist at the ducal court in Weimar — transcribed the compositions
for organ and cembalo. The second disc contains Bach’s famous Good
Friday partita “Sei gegrüsset, Jesu gütig,” as well as many of the chorale
arrangements not belonging to collections published in Bach’s time.
Rodion Shchedrin embarked on a composing career at the dawn of the
second half of the 20 th century, and since then has been actively creative.
Shchedrin is the happy owner of a gift that combines a topical music
language with traditional elements of Russian music culture, which let him
easily fit in with the global music space and, at the same time, remain an
artist with strongly pronounced national attributes of style. While Shchedrin
has created remarkable works in virtually all music genres, his relations
with piano music are special. A student of the famous professor Yakov Flier,
who was a brilliant soloist and teacher, Shchedrin continues the glorious
traditions of the Russian school. His concert performances and recordings
of his own works have always been bright events, and have attracted the
attention of thousands of music lovers.
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 7 in C major, Op. 60 “Leningrad”
Melodiya presents a recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s famous opus,
performed by one of the best interpreters of his music. Composed in
the first months of the Great Patriotic War, Shostakovich’s Symphony
No. 7 became a symbol of the struggle against fascism; its most
memorable performances took place in Moscow, New York, London,
and Buenos Aires, but its premiere in beleaguered Leningrad in
Autumn 1942 was of the utmost importance. This bright and tragic
music has not lost any of its emotional power and topicality; it sounds
as a protest against totalitarianism, violence, and suppression of human
personality and that was exactly how it sounded in the interpretation
of outstanding conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky in 1986, when
Shostakovich’s homeland was again on the threshold of great change.

J.S. BACH: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II
Johann Sebastian Bach’s cycle of preludes and fugues, The Well-Tempered
Clavier, holds a very special place in the world of music. It is not just one
of the immortal masterpieces of the world music literature; it is literally
an encyclopedia of polyphonic art and the desk book of every thinking
musician. The work gives plenty of play to every different performer’s
interpretations; none of the significant musical works have caused as
many debates about the way they should be interpreted! In the words of
pianist Sviatoslav Richter, “When I set to The Well-Tempered Clavier, I
get always consumed with desire not to exclude any sides for the sake of
one narrow and dogmatic position … I am convinced that Bach can be
played differently, with different articulation and different dynamics. So
long as the whole is preserved, so long as the strict contours of style are
not distorted, so long as the performance is convincing enough.”
Recorded from the 1940s to the 1970s, Melodiya offers a wonderful
gift for all admirers of Russian music culture: Tchaikovsky’s symphonic
works performed by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra conducted
by Evgeny Mravinsky. It is impossible to imagine the Orchestra — and
perhaps the entire domestic music culture of the 20 th century — without
Mravinsky. For more than half a century, he was at the head of the
orchestra and turned it into one of the best symphony collectives
in Europe, receiving worldwide recognition. The repertoire of
Mravinsky and his orchestra was broad and diverse, but the maestro’s
highest achievements were associated with music of Shostakovich
and Tchaikovsky. Mravinsky performed and recorded Tchaikovsky’s
last three symphonies, concertos, ballet suites, and other symphonic
works for dozens of times, much to the delight of listeners in Moscow,
SCHUMANN: Complete Solo Piano Works
Winner of the Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros, this set brings together Robert Schumann’s complete
works for solo piano. This great cycle benefited from having been recorded in the unique acoustics
of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, by Jean-Marc Laisné. Sales of the 13 CDs comprising this set
have exceeded 20,000 copies around the world. This complete recording is now acknowledged as a
reference and, at the same time, an important step in the artistic life of pianist Eric Le Sage.
The Ostinato literally went through ages … it’s a musical process founded on the repetition of a
rhythmic, or melodic, or harmonic formula. It’s the “weft” of passacaglias, ciacconas, and of very
popular works such as Ravel’s Boléro or Pachelbel’s Canon. The process also inspired a lot of pop
musicians, and minimalist American composers. Now, Vincent Dumestre has chosen the theme of
“Ostinato” to showcase some of the best Le Poème Harmonique recordings.
Les Muffatti/Peter Van Heyghen: director/Luis Otavio Santos: violin
LECLAIR: Violin Concertos, Op. 7
Few French musicians of the 18 th century were as appreciated during their lifetime as the virtuoso
violinist Jean-Marie Leclair. Three years after his tragic death — he was murdered in 1764 by a
jealous nephew — Charles Henry de Blainville remembered him as “the Corelli of France.” In
1754, Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg placed Leclair on the level of Telemann, Handel, and members
of the Bach family in terms of harmony and counterpoint; for Francesco Galeazzi in 1790, he was
the sole Frenchman on the list of principal masters of the violin in 18 th -century Europe, alongside
such major names as Corelli and Vivaldi. His Violin Concertos, Op. 7 are presented here by
brilliant violinist Luis Otavio Santos (winner of a Diapason d’Or for his album of Leclair sonatas
released by Ramée) and Les Muffatti, under the magic wand of Peter Van Heyghen.

tradition. The works on this release demonstrate her unique approach
to musical theater and vocal music, performed by the superb a cappella
RESCH: Collection Serti • Figuren • Ein Garten • Pfade, die sich
Gerald Resch, born in 1975 in Austria, developed his economical
approach to composition during his studies with Beat Furrer in Graz.
Expanding upon this, Resch commented, “Encounters, junctures, and
abstract patterns are all able to inspire the beginning of a composition.
I like superimpositions, unforeseen changes of perspective, and hidden
symmetry. I also like to invent logical but surprising developments of
simple material.” This release demonstrates his preoccupation with
plastic forms in “Cantus Firmus,” with the perception of nature in “Ein
Garten,” and with the omnipresence of a burdensome, loaded tradition.
FRANCK: Symphony in D minor • Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne • Hulda, Ballet allégorique
Fuga Libera is pleased to present Christian Arming, the new conductor and artistic director of the
Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. For this recording project with Liège, the Austrian conductor
gives his point of view on the musical spirit of the Franco-Belgian composer César Franck.
Opening the disc is the great Symphony in D minor, followed by two rare works: the symphonic
poem “Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne” and the ballet music from the opera Hulda.
FRANCK: Sonata for violin and piano in A major, M. 8 • DEBUSSY: Sonata for violin and piano,
L. 140 • Clair de lune • RAVEL: Sonata for violin and piano No. 2 in G major
Fuga Libera is happy to announce the beginning of a collaboration with young Taiwanese violinist
Yu-Chien Tseng, Fifth Prize winner of the Reine Elisabeth Violin Competition. During that
competition, Yu-Chien Tseng managed to convince both the jury and the audience (winning both
audience prizes) with his personal, poetic interpretations of pieces such as the Brahms Concerto
and Ravel’s Violin Sonata. For his first recording he has chosen a few of his favorite violin sonatas,
recorded in the magnificent Flagey Concert Hall in Brussels. His “partner in crime” is Russian
pianist Inga Dzekster, whom he met at the Tchaikovsky Competition.
Record Guide as one of the world’s greatest trombone players, Mark Hetzler is a veteran musician who
was previously a member of the Empire Brass Quintet. He has performed in recital and as a soloist
with symphony orchestras in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, Italy, Austria, Malaysia,
Singapore, Bermuda, St. Bartholomew, and across the United States.

Pieces for two pianos
Alexei Lubimov: piano/Yury Martynov: piano
release date: January 8, 2013 Zig-Zag Territoires
MOZART: Sonata in D major, KV 448 • Second Quartetto, arranged for two harpsichords by I. Pratsch
Two Zig-Zag artists unite for a disc that includes an original Mozart work (the Sonata in D major)
as well as transcriptions for two pianos. Recorded on two historic instruments from the collection
of Edwin Beunk, this is an operatic and symphonic conversation. It is also an illustration of the
highly fruitful collaboration of two singular pianists as well as a new recording featuring Yury
Martynov, who earned a Choc de Classica for his Beethoven & Liszt disc.
J.C. BACH
Zanaida
Opera Fuoco/David Stern: director
J.C. BACH: Zanaida
After a long war, Turkish emperor Soliman and Persian sophi Tamasse decide to seal the
peace between their two countries and, to this end, exchange hostages. The preliminary treaty
stipulates that, in order to make this alliance solid, Tamasse will wed Zanaida, Soliman’s daughter.
Meanwhile, the sophi falls in love with Osira, a Persian hostage sent by the emperor. This is
where the action of this opera begins, the plot skillfully mixing Tamasse’s infidelity, Zanaida’s
magnanimity, and Osira’s ambition. It is a particularly appealing opera by the fourth and last of
Johann Sebastian’s sons, whose life was atypical for a Bach, for he carried out his career not in
Germany but in Italy and England.
Ensemble 415
Italian Baroque Sonatas & Concertos
Ensemble 415/Chiara Banchini: director/Gli Incogniti/Amandine Beyer: director
A collection of sonatas and concertos by baroque composers
This set brings together recordings of Italian music by Chiara Banchini and Amandine Beyer.
It is symbolic of a filiation between the two artists, Amandine Beyer having succeeded Chiara
Banchini as professor of Baroque violin at the Schola Cantorum in Basle, Switzerland. The release
follows Amandine Beyer’s recording of Bach’s Sonatas for solo violin as well as Chiara Banchini’s
recording of his Sonatas for violin and keyboard, both of which received a Diapason d’Or. The set
includes the re-release of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by Amandine Beyer.
Piers Adams: recorder/Julian Rhodes: piano
COUPERIN: La Convalescente (premiere) • La Pucelle • La Steinquerque • La Sultane (Sonate en
quatuor) • L’Astrée • La Superbe • La Visionnaire
After the success of a CD devoted to the sonatas of Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Florence
Malgoire’s ensemble Les Dominos explores the first French sonatas. All of these works date from the
1680s, when the French had just discovered the Italian sonata style and had begun to use it, albeit in
some secrecy. This recording contains the complete sonatas of François Couperin, four of which are
the original versions of sonatas that Couperin would later make use of in Les Nations. It is the first
recording to present the sonatas in their entirety, in particular because the sonata “La Convalescente”
appears on record for the very first time. The sonata was discovered only recently in a manuscript
copy in Germany.
quando a quando havea • BONIZI: Joyssance • WILLAERT-PISADOR: O bene mio famm’uno favore
To celebrate Adriaen Willaert’s anniversary, this recording of the composer’s secular repertoire
gives us a very different vision of his work compared to his religious music, previously illustrated by
the Vespro della Beata Vergine recording (RCE 325). Recorded by Romanesque in 1994, this CD offers
a lot of pleasure — and there is no competition in the market for this recording!
FULTON: Scottish Suite • RUBBRA: Meditazione Sopra Coeurs Désolés • BOWEN: Sonata, Op. 121 •
BERKELEY: Sonatina • GREGSON: Three Matisse Impressions • DODGSON: Shine and Shade •
SWANN: Rhapsody from Within
It is arguably only in the 20 th century that the recorder has found its true expressive voice. The music
on this album is a testimony to the shining brilliance and soulful emotion that can be coaxed from a
simple pipe, much of which would not exist without the pioneering work of the late Carl Dolmetsch,
who commissioned over 50 new pieces for his annual Wigmore Hall recitals between 1939 and 1989.
This program includes five of the best works from this important collection, together with two others
of similar merit, to produce a disc that places the recorder firmly in the musical mainstream.

Friendships between major composers are often important and mutually beneficial, and they shed
light on our perception and enjoyment of their music. Schumann and Brahms, Stravinsky and
Debussy, Wagner and Liszt, Holst and Vaughan Williams — in each case one life was influenced,
aided, inspired, and affected by the other in real and tangible ways. So it was, however unlikely it
might seem, with Grieg and Delius.
A specially devised cycle of 20 songs from the Yiddish repertoire, and only the second time a collection
of Yiddish songs has been forged into a narrative cycle with a coherent dramatic trajectory! A stark
contrast to Mark Glanville’s Holocaust-focused program A Yiddish Winterreise, this record explores
different aspects of the Yiddish tradition to tell a story of unrequited love.
The revival of the 1685 oratorio Moses, Leader of the Jewish People for five voices, trumpet, and strings
celebrates the 350 th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Antonio Perti, a versatile Bolognese musician
born in 1661. This miniature opera presents a series of characters that are skillfully outlined by Perti’s
lively music. Perti’s arias require great virtuosity in the singers; this edition, recorded by the Ensemble
Les Nations, features some of the best Italian specialists of baroque singing. The trumpet is an
unusual presence, but this instrument was much appreciated in the Bolognese musical milieu of that
period, and it lends a unique instrumental timbre to the composition.
Girolamo CRESCENTINI
Solo Voice Arias
Marina Comparato: mezzo-soprano/Gianni Fabbrini: piano
CRESCENTINI: 6 cantatas and 18 arias for voice and fortepiano composed in Paris in 1810, and a
collection of 6 arias composed for the Queen of Holland
The musician Girolamo Crescentini was a very well known figure in the greatest theatres, both in
Italy and abroad, at the end of the 18 th century. He had started out as a castrato singer, but at the
beginning of the 19 th century he had already become singing teacher to the imperial family and
court composer in Paris. This recording contains a monographic collection of six cantatas and 18
arias for voice and fortepiano composed in Paris in 1810, and a collection of six arias composed
for the Queen of Holland. These pieces, which have a classical form and are based on texts by
Metastasio, show musical characteristics that range from late Classicism to early Romanticism,
with a certain influence of Mittel-European lied music, particularly in the piano part.
MARINUZZI: Partita (1941, for two pianos) • Divertimento on a popular theme (1945, for piano
Son of the famous conductor and composer Gino Marinuzzi, this composer was born in New
York in April 1920, during one of his father’s U.S. tours. As a good piano player and a brilliant
student, he started composing mainly piano music. From 1943 to 1944 he was imprisoned in
Ludwigshafen Nazi camp, where he wrote the Lagerlieder for piano four hands, only discovered
many years later. This CD contains the Partita for two pianos, the Divertimento for piano four
hands, and the unedited Lagerlieder.

The quirkily-named Glasgow-based chamber group Daniel’s Beard takes Einstein’s description of
chamber music as its motto: the music of friends. This ethos means that this second disc from the
group is one that is very special indeed. It features music by organist and composer Christopher
Rathbone, with some of the music written especially for them while other pieces date from earlier in
Rathbone’s career. And the group’s connection with the composer has a further dimension — his son,
cellist Tom, is one of the ensemble’s founding members.
Meridian Records is proud to announce the release of Hanne Tofte Jespersen’s music to the Celtic
female saint and mystic Melangell’s magical tale, recorded by the composer’s Scandinavian ensemble
Music for the Mysteries. Jespersen’s one-hour composition is scored for five singers, violin, double
well as the author’s account for it, is found in the illustrated booklet along with the text set to music.
SATIE: Le Fils des Étoiles
release date: January 8, 2013 passacaille
This impressively long work has never been recorded in its complete version on an instrument
of Satie’s lifetime. It is in many ways a revolutionary piece, where Satie explores harmonic
constellations that other composers would almost 30 years later. On this release, the music is
played by pianist Alexi Lubimov, one of the most strikingly original musicians performing
today. His vast repertoire, combined with his dedication to principle and musical morals,
make him a notable exception in today’s music scene.
Margret Köll, a rising star in the world of historical harps, joins Il Giardino Armonico founder
Luca Pianca to present a musical experience conceived on the model of the old master
instrumentalists and improvisers who were capable of adapting all kinds of music to the needs
of the moment. The title Giants refers to the composers presented on this recording, who are
truly musical giants. Monteverdi began the Baroque era, Bach brought it to an end 150 years
later, and both have left us masterpieces of immense artistic value. This CD guarantees a fresh
look into this music via the surprising sound combination of lute and harp.
In a letter to Johann Friedrich Rochlitz, W.A. Mozart wrote of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach:
“He is the father, we are the children. Those of us who do something well have learnt it
from him. Whoever refuses to admit this is not honest.” Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was also
revered by Haydn and Beethoven, and his keyboard method was quoted as a work of reference
until well into the 19 th century. The genius of Johann Sebastian’s second son was also well
recognized during his lifetime, and his fame was greater than that of his father.
Anyone who tries to find out more about the composer Ernst Toch will
soon realize that it is not an easy task. No monograph is to be found
on the shelves of leading bookstores, and even in the big libraries only
a handful of scientific works can be consulted. However, almost all
publications quote a sentence by Toch with which he characterized his
late years: “I am the twentieth century’s most forgotten composer.” In
his youth he experienced the Habsburg Empire’s metropolis in what
was probably her most exciting time ever. However, his life and work
was less influenced by Vienna than by the almost coeval Alban Berg
and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, ten years his junior, who both soon
formed part of the most influential coteries of Vienna’s musical life.
LAWES: The Passion of Musicke
On the death of William Lawes, King James I — who called him “The
Father of Music” — observed several weeks of mourning. Lawes is set out
from among the composers of the golden age of English music for the
modernity, audacity, and depth of his writing. The works collected here
use a very unique combination of two bowed string instruments, violin
and bass viol, and two plucked instruments, the harp and the theorbo,
for which Lawes wrote concertante parts. The result is music of extreme
sophistication and contrapuntal complexity.
publication was overdue, Marin Marais published his “Deuxième Livre
de Pièces de Viole” where one finds, just as in Corelli’s Op. 5, several
variations on the famous theme of “La Follia” or “Folies d’Espagne.” In
addition to these famous “Folies,” this recording enables us to discover
two suites in A major and E major, an unusual key for the viol.

The height of the Baroque period, at the beginning of 18 th century, was a time for wars and upheavals
in Catalonia, but also for the establishment of a royal court in Barcelona after three centuries without
one. Tomàs Milans (1672–1742) is one of the main composers of this period — a contemporary
of Fux, Delalande, Caldara, Scarlatti, and Albinoni — although he composed only religious music
for his work as a chapel master in Barcelona and Girona. This recording contains a varied selection,
from the “Magnificat” for eight voices over an ostinato to the Spanish cantata “Suspende infelice” for
soprano and continuo.
Lodewijk de Vocht is one of the most unforgettable personalities of the Antwerp Music scene in the
first half of the 20 th century. He was a composer, as well as a conductor and a teacher. At the age of ten
he became a chorister in the Antwerp Cathedral Choir, where he received a general music education
from Emile Wambach and Karel Weymans. In 1899 he joined the orchestra class of the Antwerp Royal
Flemish Conservatory. After his studies he returned to the conservatory as a teacher and, later, as its
headmaster. In 1903 De Vocht was the youngest violinist of the orchestra of the New Concerts Society
and had the opportunity to play under the greatest conductors of his time, including Gustav Mahler,
Richard Strauss, Hans Richter, Bruno Walter, and Felix Weingartner.
In 1830 Ignace Pleyel, music publisher and royal instrument maker, established his factory
at the Hôtel Cromot du Bourg in the heart of Paris. This was one year after he founded the
“Ignace Pleyel and Co. Society” with composer-pianist Frederic Kalkbrenner. In this 18 th -century
mansion, the Pleyel family set up a concert hall in the salons of the first floor, where they hosted
elite musicians and amateurs, and introduced them to new pianos from the factory floor. Chopin
was genuinely partial towards Pleyel pianos, and owned two Pleyel instruments: a grand piano
and a pianino, on which he gave lessons.

Finnish composer Ekki Melartin (1875–1937) was an exact
contemporary of Maurice Ravel: they have the same dates of birth
and death. He was also one of the most prolific Finnish composers:
199 opus numbers as well as many other works. He wrote about
250 pieces for the piano, usually with more or less evocative titles,
most of them in post-romantic style that was current at his time.
