West Bend Classic Honors NIU Friend
The West Bend Evans Scholars Classic, held
June 23, 2007, raised $40,000 for the Evans
Scholars Program, bringing the total raised over
the past 27 years to more than $850,000.
With 135 in attendance for golf and dinner,
the Classic honored Charley Laing, builder of
the Northern Illinois University Evans Scholars
Maple Bluff Evans Classic
The 29th annual Evans Scholarship Classic,
held June 11, 2007, raised $35,000 for the
Evans Scholars, bringing the total raised to more
than $526,000 since the Classic was founded.
“Many supporters helped make this year’s
Classic a success, including our tee and green
sponsors,” said WGA Secretary and Director
Ron Kelly, event chairman. “We also are grateful
for the support of Maple Bluff members and officers.”
Maple Bluff WGA Director Mike Greenhalgh
announced a $2,500 sponsor donation from the
Malcolm Stack Foundation.

event by caddying,
with at least one Evans
Scholar assigned to
each foursome.
The 30th annual Evans
Scholars Classic will
be held Monday, June
9, 2008, at Maple Bluff
Country Club.
“We are looking
forward to another
successful event as we
celebrate our 30th anniversary,”
Kelly said.

Evans Scholars Program.
Laing’s relationship with the Evans Scholars
was celebrated in his memory following his 2006
death in a single-engine plane crash in Georgia.
“Charley was a great friend and supporter
of the Evans Scholars Program,” recalled Bob
Alsteen, WGA Trustee and Past Chairman and
founder/chairman of the West Bend Classic.
“This year’s Classic was sponsored in Charley’s
memory through an anonymous title sponsorship
gift of $10,000.”
Laing and Alsteen worked with ESF senior
vice president of foundation advancement Jim
Moore to build the NIU Scholarship House
when the chapter was founded in 1987.
The 2008 West Bend Classic will be held on
June 28.
Pacific Northwest Cups
The Evans Cup of Washington, held August
27, 2007, at Seattle Golf Club raised over
$175,000 through sponsorships, silent auction,
fund-a-scholar and a live auction.
The funds generated from this event helps
the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA)
support the 29 Evans Scholars who attend the
University of Washington and Washington State
University.
The Evans Cup of Oregon, held on September
10, 2007, at Oswego Lake Country Club in
Lake Oswego, Oregon, raised $100,000 for the
Evans Scholarship Program.
Each year, the Pacific Northwest Golf Association
(PNGA) and the Oregon Golf Association
(OGA) conduct the event, which features golf,
gourmet food and upscale live auction items.
The funds generated from this event helps
the OGA and PNGA support the more than 40
Evans Scholars at the University of Oregon and
Oregon State.
Each Evans Cup tournament includes a brunch
followed by a net-team competition, with each
team comprised of four amateurs and one professional.
All vie for the coveted crystal Evans Cup. In
the evening, contestants and guests have cocktails
and a silent auction before the live auction
and dinner. The big reward of the day, of course,
is helping fund young students’ educations.
