Ways to Give
Investing in Future Leaders
Alum’s Gift Honors His Parents
F
or Terry Kett, the Evans Scholarship was
a launching point to a happy and satisfying
life.
The scholarship enabled him to attend Northwestern
University, where he graduated in 1964
with a degree in chemical engineering. From
there, he earned a master’s degree
in 1965 and a Ph.D. in 1968 from
Michigan State University before
spending 34 years with Exxon.
Now, through an Endowed
Named Scholarship, he wants to
give a student the same opportunities
he had.
“None of this would have been
possible without the Evans Schol-
arship,” said Kett, who caddied at
Riverside Golf Club. “I want to
give back for what they did for me
and help someone else.”
Kett retired from Exxon in 2002 after a rewarding
career that included numerous management
and executive assignments throughout the
U.S. and overseas. He lives in Houston and keeps
busy with golf, church and volunteer work. He
has two grown children. But he hasn’t forgotten
his roots.
“The scholarship was extremely important
to me,” he said. “It made my college educa-
Alum Terry Kett says his parents
taught him to do his best.
tion much more pleasant and it taught me about
working as a unit. It was a great experience.”
He has fond memories of spending a summer
working at the WGA headquarters in Golf,
Illinois, helping track down alumni for Mac
McGuigan. Always an avid reader of the “Mac
Report,” Kett recently saw a
feature on Northwestern alum
James Utaski, who also gave to
the Endowed Fund. “I got on
the phone right away after I read
it,” he said. “I was thinking of
doing that anyhow. But that just
pushed me.”
The endowed scholarship will
be named in honor of his parents,
who were key to his success. His
father, Lewis, 88, and his mother,
Iris, 86, emigrated from England
when Terry was 13. They currently live in Glen
Ellyn, Illinois. The most important lesson they
passed along?
“No matter what the task, accomplish it the
best that anyone can do it,” he said. “Whether it
was serving as a bus boy at a Northwestern sorority
or handling the biggest tasks at Exxon, do the
best you can at that job.”
The scholarship will be listed as: The Lewis
Kenneth & Iris Violet Kett Scholarship.
