THE RUBBER BOWL n n n Opened in 1940, The University of Akron’s Rubber Bowl is the second-largest collegiate stadium in the state of Ohio. With current capacity at 31,000, The Bowl is among the largest facilities in the Mid-American Conference. New turf was put down in 1983 and 1991, and an AstroPlay surface was installed prior to the 2003 season.
RESHAPING ZIPS FOOTBALL n n n Over the last four seasons, head coach J.D. Brookhart and his staff have renovated Akron football. Brookhart was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 2004, and then guided the Zips to the MAC Championship and the program’s first Division I-A bowl game appearance in 2005. As the program’s profile and list of accomplishments continues to grow, so too does the amount of former Zips playing in the professional ranks.
