STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES n n n With the campus and the athletics department having wrapped up a $300 million facilities upgrade in the summer of 2004, The University of Akron has become one of the most modern and up-to-date campuses in the Mid-American Conference. The Stile Athletics Field House and student recreation center, along with an on-campus football practice facility, are the newest additions to the athletics complex. 2 Both the Stile Athletics Field House and student recreation center projects were part of a $300-million, five-year campus improvement program. Under that initiative, the University added or renovated 14 buildings, and created 30 acres of new green space, including the planting of 30,000 trees, leading to a “New Landscape for Learning” in Akron. Amenities of the stile Athletics Field House and rec center include: • A full 120-yard AstroPlay field, 300-meter Mondo track, strength and conditioning center, indoor golf facility, football locker room and spectator seating for 1,200. • The varsity strength and conditioning center, with over 8,000-square-feet of space, includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment. • The Zips indoor golf facility (pictured top right) is among the best in the nation and includes a putting green, bunker, video golf simulator and study lounge. • Additional components include a training room, varsity locker rooms, plus stateof-the-art athletic equipment and storage areas. • A four-lane elevated running track, basketball courts, rock-climbing wall, recreational pool and weight room highlight the student rec center.
The stile Athletics field house (pictured above) is the latest addition to the athletics complex at the University, providing UA’s 18 varsity sports a practice, strength and conditioning, and sports medicine facility unlike any in the mid-American Conference. Zips student-athletes also train on an outdoor 120-yard AstroPlay surface (pictured above right), which serves as the main practice venue for the football team. over its four years of existence, the stile Athletics field house has shown its versatility in playing host to a variety of events. in addition to both high school and collegiate track and field meets, the facility has been home to local expositions, indoor soccer and softball tournaments, university luncheons and the American heart walk. in addition, the facility has housed UA’s annual Pro Timing Day (below), the Blue-Gold spring Game (above), the BiG eAsT Conference Track & field Championships, and the 2007 UsA wrestling Asics University and fiLA Cadet national Championships. The stile Athletics field house also played host to the Denver Broncos in 2004 and the oakland raiders in 2006 as a practice facility for the nfL hall of fame preseason games. 3
