The University of Akron offers approximately 300 associate, bachelor’s, master’s,
doctoral and law degree programs and 100 certificate programs. UA also offers an
accelerated medical education through its partnership with the Northeastern Ohio
Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy.
HONORS COLLEGE
The Honors College combines the benefits of a large
university with the personal attention of a small college.
Honors students work with advisers to develop an academic
plan tailored to their individual needs and goals.
A Tradition of community
Honors students are exceptional in their enthusiasm for learning,
their expression and creative achievement, their abilities
to challenge themselves and excel, and their commitment to
ideas and communities.
The Honors College is designed to help participants
develop and extend those qualities by providing an enriched
curriculum, expert advising, and an ideal living and working
environment.
Honors students are admitted directly to an undergraduate
college so they can pursue major interests right away. While
completing an academic major, Honors College students
select an individual program of study, including special honors
sections of courses and honors colloquia in humanities, social
sciences and natural sciences.
During the senior year, they complete individually
designed research projects. Throughout their UA years,
each honors student is guided by a faculty member
who specializes in that student’s field of study.

You may be able to live in the residential facilities
of our new Honors Complex. The complex is
located in the heart of campus. You’ll also have
access to a special computer lab reserved solely
for honors students’ use, as well as seminar rooms
and a two-story common room.
requirements for Admission
The Honors College seeks students who are in the top 10
percent academically. For students entering from high school,
academic evidence of such excellence should include at least
two of the following:
• High school cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50
• High school class rank among the highest 10 percent
• ACT composite score of at least 27 or SAT combined score
in the top 10 percent

UNIVERSITy COLLEGE
Most incoming students, including those who are
exploring various majors, are assigned to University
College until they select a major, fulfill its requirements
and are recommended for transfer to the
appropriate academic college.
Transition to college
Summer Reading Program: All new students are expected to
read a selected book prior to fall. Discussion and/or writing
assignments in several 100-level courses follow-up on the
assignment.
Student Success Seminar: This two-credit course provides
an overview of the many services available. Students also
learn about:
• Study skills
• University history
• Personal development
• Computer access and use
• Academic management
Career Planning Course: If you are exploring what to study,
we have a course in career decision-making. You will examine
your interests, skills, values and personality while identifying
possible career paths.
