Technical Specifications (1987/88)<br />

The <strong>Mk</strong>II <strong>Golf</strong> was homologated into Group A in<br />

1984 and made its competition début by the<br />

factory team on the 1000 Lakes Rally in August<br />

1984. <strong>Volkswagen</strong> Motorsport entered the 8-valve<br />

<strong>Mk</strong>II <strong>GTI</strong> on the 1985 World Rally Championship<br />

with Jochi Kleint and Franz Wittmann as drivers.<br />

For 1986 <strong>Volkswagen</strong> Motorsport got the new 16valve<br />

head and they put all their effort into<br />

winning the FIA Group A World Drivers<br />

Championship. Seven class wins sealed the<br />

championship for Kenneth Eriksson. Eriksson<br />

continued for 1987 with the championship now<br />

being solely for Group A machinery. The class<br />

win on the Côte d'Ivoire was also an overall win.<br />

But the car now struggled against the opposition<br />

and the factory only entered Weber in a few early<br />

season events in 1988. The final works outing<br />

came in 1989 when Stig Blomqvist took his <strong>Mk</strong>II<br />

<strong>Golf</strong> to third overall on the Safari Rally. Raimund<br />

Baumschlager took the final class win on a World<br />

Championship event on the 1990 Tour de Corse.<br />

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF MKII – HISTORY<br />

The successor to the original <strong>Golf</strong> was presented in February 1984. The <strong>Mk</strong>II had grown in size as the wheelbase was<br />

lengthened by 75 mm, the track by 23 mm (front) and 50 mm (rear), while the overall length increased by 170 mm and<br />

the width by 55 mm. In evitably the <strong>Mk</strong>II was 80 kg heavier. The car's weight increased had from 840 kg to 920 kg. The<br />

new body had a better aerodynamic shape and the drag coefficient went down from 0.42 to 0.34. The 1800cc 112 PS<br />

engine was inherited from the <strong>Mk</strong>I. In September 1985 the engine got a new DOHC 16-valve head and power was<br />

increased to 139 PS. The <strong>Mk</strong>II remained in production until February 1992, when no less than 6,301,000 units had been<br />

produced.<br />

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF MKII – COMPETITION HISTORY<br />

The <strong>Mk</strong>II <strong>Golf</strong> was homologated into Group A in 1984 and made its competition début by the factory team on the 1000<br />

Lakes Rally in August 1984. <strong>Volkswagen</strong> Motorsport entered the 8-valve <strong>Mk</strong>II <strong>GTI</strong> on the 1985 World Rally<br />

Championship with Jochi Kleint and Franz Wittmann as drivers. Wittmann had two class wins during the year and<br />

Lars-Erik Torph beat both factory drivers to the class win in Finland in his Swedish entered car. For 1986 <strong>Volkswagen</strong><br />

Motorsport got the new 16-valve head and they put all their effort into winning the FIA Group A World Drivers<br />

Championship. Kenneth Eriksson replaced Kleint and Eriksson drove the <strong>Golf</strong> to fantastic results among all the Group B<br />

machinery. Seven class wins sealed the championship for Eriksson. Eriksson continued for 1987 with the championship<br />

now being solely for Group A machinery. Erwin Weber replaced Wittmann in the second factory car. The year netted<br />

four class wins for Eriksson and one for Weber. The class win on the Côte d'Ivoire was also an overall win. But the car<br />

now struggled against the opposition and the factory only entered Weber in a few early season events in 1988. Weber<br />

took a class win in Portugal and privateers took a couple of more class wins for the <strong>Mk</strong>II <strong>Golf</strong>. The final works outing<br />

came in 1989 when Stig Blomqvist took his <strong>Mk</strong>II <strong>Golf</strong> to third overall on the Safari Rally. The factory now concentrated<br />

on the G60 Rallye 4WD version and it was left to the privateers to keep the FWD <strong>Mk</strong>II <strong>Golf</strong> flag flying. Raimund<br />

Baumschlager took the final class win on a World Championship event on the 1990 Tour de Corse.<br />

VOLKSWAGEN IN MOTORSPORT<br />

At the beginning there was the circuit: the foundation stone for <strong>Volkswagen</strong>'s motor sport activities was laid back in<br />

1966 with the founding of the "Verband Formel V Europa e.V." (European Formula V Federation). The goal was to bring<br />

the "Formula Vee" - built from VW Beetle parts - from the USA to Europe. In 1967, the federation already had 14<br />

member countries. In 1971 came the more powerful Formula Super V, which until its end in 1982 counted as a school for<br />

up-and-coming drivers, which produced Formula 1 drivers such as Niki Lauda, Jochen Mass, Nelson Piquet, Jochen<br />

Rindt and Keke Rosberg. <strong>Volkswagen</strong> also achieved several victories and the championship in Formula 3. After its move<br />

in 1973 to Hanover, close to the <strong>Volkswagen</strong> Corporation, the department, renamed as <strong>Volkswagen</strong> Motorsport in 1981,<br />

specialised in a new field. With the first generation VW <strong>Golf</strong>, the sports department took over the development of rally<br />

cars. At home and abroad, the <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>GTI</strong> in the hands of Sweden's Per Eklund, the Frenchman, Jean-Luc Thérier, and the<br />

Finn, Pentti Airikkala took the world by storm. Even title dreams became reality: Alfons Stock won the German rally<br />

championships in 1981 in a group 2 <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>GTI</strong>. On its 20th anniversary in 1986, Sweden's Kenneth Eriksson presented<br />

<strong>Volkswagen</strong> Motorsport the title in group A of the world rally championships. With various <strong>Golf</strong> bi-motor projects for<br />

the famous Pikes Peak mountain race in the US state of Colorado, the sportsmen and -women from Hanover also<br />

demonstrated substantial technical skills in building prototypes for disciplines related to rallying. After many more<br />

successes with the <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>GTI</strong>, including the overall victory in the Germany Rally 1987, the 4x4 era began at <strong>Volkswagen</strong><br />

in 1990 with the Rally <strong>Golf</strong>. With it, Erwin Weber easily won the 1991 German rally championships. Via customer sports<br />

projects, the company was again strongly represented in national and international rallying from 1997 with the <strong>Golf</strong> III<br />

Kit Car, and two years later with the <strong>Golf</strong> IV Kit Car. The Polo Super 1600, which customers use to chase points in the<br />

newly created Junior classes since the 2001 season, is another step in the company's successful rallying tradition. After<br />

sprint rallying, <strong>Volkswagen</strong> will soon be represented on the marathon scene. Even if the two disciplines are different in<br />

many ways, they both have one thing in common: unforgiving terrain is where both types of rally are held. If the<br />

company should achieve its goal of an overall win at the Dakar Rally, it won't be the first time the name of <strong>Volkswagen</strong><br />

has been among the winners: in 1980, Freddy Kottulinsky and Patrick Zaniroli achieved double success in the world's<br />

toughest rally in the VW Iltis.<br />
