seen that the caps are numbered 1 to 5 and<br />
that the number is on the side of the engine<br />
opposite the oil pump position. Identify these<br />
numbers. If they are obscured, then mark the<br />
caps in the same way as the connecting rod<br />
caps. Before removing the caps, push the<br />
crankshaft to the rear and check the endfloat<br />
using a feeler blade between the thrustwasher<br />
flanges on No 3 main bearing and the<br />
crankshaft web (see illustration). It must not<br />
exceed the specified maximum.<br />
4 Remove the bearing cap retaining bolts,<br />
remove the bearing caps and lift out the<br />
thrustwashers from each side of the centre<br />
main bearing.<br />

5 Lift out the crankshaft and then remove the<br />
top half bearing shells. If the main bearings<br />
are not being renewed, make sure the shells<br />
are identified so that they go back into the<br />
same bearing cap the same way round<br />
16 Intermediate shaft - removal<br />

1 The intermediate shaft can only be<br />
withdrawn from the crankcase with the engine<br />
removed from the vehicle.<br />
2 Remove the timing belt.<br />

3 Remove the fuel pump on carburettor<br />
models and the ignition distributor.<br />
4 Before removing the intermediate shaft,<br />
check that the endfloat does not exceed the<br />
maximum specified amount.<br />
5 Undo the two sealing flange retaining bolts<br />
then withdraw the intermediate shaft,<br />
<strong>com</strong>plete with sealing flange (see<br />
illustrations).<br />
6 Withdraw the sealing flange from the<br />
intermediate shaft. The oil seal within the<br />
flange and the O-ring must be renewed on<br />
reassembly.<br />
