14.13a Withdrawing crankshaft rear oil<br />

seal housing . . .<br />

14 Support the housing and drive out the oil<br />

seal (see illustration).<br />

15 Clean the recess in the housing.<br />

16 Smear a little clean engine oil on the lip<br />

and outer edge of the new seal then tap it into<br />

the housing using a block of wood (see<br />

illustration).<br />

17 Clean the mating faces then refit the<br />

housing, together with a new gasket, and<br />

tighten the bolts evenly in diagonal sequence.<br />

18 Refit the sump and flywheel.<br />

15 Sump - removal<br />

1 If the engine is still in the vehicle, first carry<br />

out the following operations:<br />

a) Jack up the front of the vehicle and<br />

support it on axle stands (see “Jacking<br />

and vehicle support”). Apply the<br />

handbrake<br />

b) Disconnect the right-hand side driveshaft<br />

and the exhaust system<br />

c) Unclip the alternator wire from the sump<br />

(see illustration)<br />

d) Drain the engine oil into a suitable<br />

container. Clean the drain plug and<br />

washer and refit it, tightening to the<br />

specified torque<br />

2 Unscrew the bolts and withdraw the sump<br />

from the cylinder block (see illustration). If it<br />

is stuck, lever it away or cut through the<br />

gasket with a knife .<br />

3 Scrape the gasket from the sump and<br />

cylinder block.<br />

16 Oil pump - removal<br />

1 Remove the timing belt and crankshaft<br />

sprocket.<br />

2 Remove the sump.<br />

3 Unbolt and remove the pick-up tube and<br />

strainer from the oil pump and cylinder block.<br />

Remove the flange gasket (see illustration).<br />

4 Unscrew the bolts and withdraw the oil<br />

pump from the dowels on the front of the<br />

cylinder block. Note that the timing pointed<br />

bracket is located on the two upper central<br />

bolts and the timing belt guard on the two<br />

left-hand side bolts. Remove the gasket (see<br />

illustrations).<br />
