■ Distribution Concepts at Embedded World
Dear Reader,
Communication - whether it´s wired or
wireless – has a major impact in our daily
live. The World Wide Web is installed
and you connect to it at nearly every
place and whenever you like. Today
there are five billion via Internet connected
devices on earth and due to
Market Research Company IDC this
total could reach 15 billion by 2015. The
International Telecommunications
Union (ITU) is calling this the next generation
of the Internet: the “Internet of
Things.” Through the Internet, millions
of connected intelligent devices are today
communicating with and controlling
each other without human intervention.
The fact is the world is well on its way to exploring what can be done
when intelligent devices are connected through the Internet and communicating
constantly with each other and with people. Intel is calling
this new era the “Embedded Internet” (see cover story page 6).
Everywhere you look there are devices, appliances and systems that
could be enhanced by the addition of embedded intelligence and an IP
connection that enables remote monitoring and control, information
exchange, automated operation, and environmental or contextual
awareness. The Embedded Internet is the new digital frontier and can
offer enormous opportunity to companies that get involved in developing
solutions that take advantage of a continuously connected world
based on Internet-compatible standards, seamless connectivity, and
scalability.
Just 17 years ago the World Wide Web sprung into being. Then the mobile
Internet age took off with the advent of wireless technologies. Now
the connection of physical objects is set to take off with the coming
adoption of IPv6. There will be enough IP addresses for virtually every
human on the planet to have a personal network approximately 12
quintillion times larger than the Internet today. Obviously it's going to
take more than a plethora of IP addresses to make devices smart and
connected. This is where the embedded industry comes into play. Some
of the most important players in the building of the Embedded Internet
will be the members of the Intel Embedded and Communications
Alliance (Intel ECA) which will present their products at Embedded
World from 3rd to 5th March in the Nuremberg exhibition centre.
It´s no secret that designing embedded systems is a challenging task. Resources
in the development departments are limited, systems are getting
more complex and in parallel the pressure on time to market is increasing.
But there is a solution: Distribution has recognized this problem
and therefore more and more Distributors are offering specific
services for the embedded market. Which ones you´ll find in the article
“Distribution concepts for the embedded market” starting at page
22. For those of you who are interested in product news presented at
the Embedded World 2009 we collected new products in the article
“Embedded World Product Highlights”. The product information will
help you to plan your visit at this important event for the embedded
community. I´m looking forward to see you there.
■ According to the research firm IDC, there are
five billion connected devices today and this
total could reach 15 billion by 2015. 1 When that
happens, there will be more connected devices
than people on the planet. These connections
will remove all kinds of boundaries in how we
relate with information, automation, and the
operation of devices. The International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) is calling
this the next generation of the Internet: the “Internet
of Things.” 2 And the transition is already
in high gear. Through the Internet, millions of
connected intelligent devices are today communicating
with and controlling each other
without human intervention. This trend is
only going to grow as the advantages of having
devices and people always connected
everywhere redefines human-machine relationships,
spawns new usage models, and enhances
people's lives, work, health and safety.
Imagine, for instance, a smart shopping cart
with a video display that syncs up with an RFID
chip in a customer's Frequent Shopper Card to
collect data on buyer preferences and makes
suggestions on current specials. Systems could
even provide shoppers with their “typical shopping
list” based on the aisle they're at and
automatically take items with RFID tags off the
list as they're placed in the cart. Another good
example is a home dashboard that would con-
trol intelligent household appliances and enable
smart metering with the utility company.
Monitoring signals from the power grid, the
dashboard could recognize when energy demand
and prices are high and adjust appliance
operation. It could signal a refrigerator, for instance,
to delay its defrost cycle to ease energy
demand, take advantage of lower rates during
off-peak hours, and help prevent blackouts.
Thefactis,theworldiswellonitswayto
Doug Davis, Intel Vice President and
General Manager of the Intel Embedded and
Communications Group, calls it “the experience
March 2009 6
of a lifetime,” and predicts soon we will all
wonder how we got ever got along with less
than 15 billion intelligent connected devices.
We're not too far from getting there either – according
to IDC, we reached 5 billion connected
devices in 2008. 3
The Experience of a Lifetime
They say a journey of a thousand miles begins
with a single step. For the Embedded Internet,
it's more likely to begin with a thousand steps
all at once. Hundreds of companies have the
ability to step forward and get involved by:
1. Adding Internet connectivity when developing
products
2. Developing ways this connectivity can be
used to enhance the operation and functionality
of their products and those products they
may connect to.
The Embedded Internet will happen really
fast. Just 17 years ago the World Wide Web
Now the connection of physical objects is
there will be enough IP addresses for virtually

COVER STORY
every human on the planet to have a personal
network approximately 12 quintillion times
larger than today's Internet.” 5 Farmers in Japan
are apparently already convinced. They've
started to embed wireless RFID chips with IPv6
addresses beneath the skins of their cows to
better track them. 6
Key Players in the Embedded
Internet
Obviously it's going to take more than a
plethora of IP addresses to make devices smart
and connected. This is where the embedded industry
comes into play. Some of the most important
players in the building of the Embedded
Internet will be the members of the Intel®
Embedded and Communications Alliance
(Intel® ECA). Intel® ECA is one of the industry’s
most recognized ecosystems and its members
offer hundreds of board-level Intel®
architecture-based products and solutions
ranging from 65mm X 58mm modules to full
AdvancedTCA (ATCA) systems. From high
performance multi-processor, quad-core 200W
ATCA systems down to sub 5W size-constrained
modules and small form factor SBCs,
these Intel architecture-based solutions can
meet the enormous range of performance,
thermal, size, and cost requirements necessary
to enable the Embedded Internet. This is extremely
important because unlike some hardware
architectures available for the Embedded
Internet, Intel architecture offers so much
breadth. The availability of such a complete
range of off-the-shelf solutions based on Intel
architecture makes it easy to find and buy a
board for each product rather than expend time
and effort designing one. What's more, Intel architecture
offers one of the broadest set of software
development tools and open source software
libraries and utilities. This makes for easier
hardware design efforts, quicker software development
cycle, and faster time-to-market – all
things that can help companies better compete
in the Embedded Internet space.
The Processors that Will Power
the Embedded Internet
Of all the microprocessor manufacturers, one
of the best equipped to unify the Embedded Internet
market around a common processor architecture
and software instructional set is
Intel. In the past few years, Intel has expanded
its embedded processor line and today offers a
full range of solutions from the really small to
the really powerful. Examples of the small include
the Intel® Atom processor series with its
thermal design power (TDP) 7 specification of
less than 5 watts that is being used for everything
from in-vehicle infotainment systems,
home automation, and media phones to surgery
patient monitoring devices. Also small, but
big for board designers, is the Intel® EP80579
Integrated Processor product line. These
System-on-a-Chip (SoC) processors include a
CPU, plus integrated memory controller, I/O
and network interfaces to combine the functions
of up to four chips into one. This enables
board designers to streamline development and
capitalize on this line's smaller footprint, lower
power consumption, enhanced performance,
and a full complement of I/O choices.
Intel® Atom processor: small and low power
When high performance is required, such as for
medical imaging equipment, sophisticated content
firewalls, network attached storage, and
telecommunications (wireless and wireline)
servers, Intel more than meets requirements
with its Intel® Xeon® processor platforms.
Other well-known Intel® processor platforms –
such as Intel® Core2 Quad, Intel® Core2
Duo, Intel® Pentium® and Intel® Celeron®
processors – fill a variety of performance needs
for other market segments such as industrial
control and automation, retail and transaction
solutions, gaming, and print imaging. For developers,
this broad range of Intel architecturebased
products is game-changing. It means they
can now use the same compilers and other software
development tools they're familiar with
from developing software for other Intel products.
It also means they can take advantage of
the existing Intel ECA ecosystem and its many
resources. Jim McGregor, a principal analyst
with In-Stat notes that “one thing you could do
immediately [by standardizing on Intel architecture]
is solve all of the incompatibility problems
we have between all these different devices
we carry around.” 8 What's more, Intel's
well-defined product roadmap enables manufacturers
and designers to reliably plan for the
future as they work on their designs for today.
Advantech Tackles Remote Energy
Production Management
A good example of energy management
Premier Member of Intel ECA. A customer
Emerson Network Power Embedded Computing,
a Premier Member of Intel ECA, sees
the embedded Internet playing an ever greater
role in medical applications. This includes
everything from handheld diagnostic devices to
wireless mobile workstations for patient-side
electronic documentation to molecular imaging
at the atomic level. Emerson Network
Power products, such as its ATCA-7350, are
capabilities to enable fast, portable medical imaging
in clinics, as well as advanced image
reconstruction, post processing and display in
major medical centers. What this means is a
doctor can have imaging performed on a
patient at a local clinic, and then have it compressed
and sent via IP to equipment in a major
medical facility capable of running the complex
particular field of medicine virtually anywhere
in the world can then easily be brought in for
consultation and a more informed diagnosis.
Driving the size and cost of these devices
performance. Sensors continually require more
channels, increased processing capabilities,
higher memory performance and greater communications
bandwidth. Kontron, a Premier
Member of Intel ECA, quenches this thirst with
products like its PENTXM2 VME 6U computer
board designed around 1.67GHz dual-core
Intel® Xeon® ULV (ultra low voltage) processors.
At the heart of these SBCs is a server-class
Intel® E7520 chipset that delivers the high
bandwidth required by demanding signal processing
applications. This SBC (and other
rugged Intel-based Kontron boards) includes a
new backplane connector that bridges new and
old technology. Thanks to this backplane
connector, the leading edge I/O bandwidth of
PCIe links can now leverage already deployed
VME and cPCI infrastructures that were not
TECHNICAL TRENDS
Embedded computers for both
standard products and custom services
By Norbert Hauser, Kontron
This article reviews current trends in
embedded computing, and how these are
reflected in the product ranges which
Kontron will present at Embedded World,
including the company’s new Nano Clients.
■ The trend towards outsourcing custom-specific
embedded computer design and manufacturing,
combined with even smaller embedded
computer devices, has led Kontron to
adopt more proactive marketing of its original
design and manufacturing (ODM) services.
Nevertheless, a broad range of leading-edge
standard products for a diversified range of
OEM applications remains the company’s primary
focus for achieving fastest time-tomarket
and cost-effective custom design and
manufacturing, using a standard portfolio.
The development of more highly integrated and
increasingly small processors and chipsets, based
on 45nm technology, is increasing the demand
for ever-smaller form factors and systems. Since
the locations of external interfaces vary more for
smaller systems than they do for larger ones, it is
often not possible to use standard boards for
many small systems that require cable-free interconnects
to the external housing. The resulting
need for custom designs, combined with
growing economic pressure, is likely to force
companies to stop designing and manufacturing
hardware in-house in favour of outsourcing to
embedded computer manufacturers.
When looking for an outsourcing partner,
OEM customers should make sure that the embedded
vendor also offers product life-cycle
management services, from initial design to
production and EOL management. This re-
lieves the project management burden, enabling
OEMs to free-up resources and concentrate on
core competences. Another important factor,
especially in 2009, is the financial strength of
the vendor. Financially strong vendors with a
wide product portfolio are well placed to compensate
for fluctuations in demand and ensure
maximum investment security. They are also
able to use their own standard products for designing
and manufacturing cost-optimized,
tailor-made boards and systems that enable
OEMs achieve fastest time-to-market. Kontron
has been offering custom design and manufacturing
services for many years. Nonetheless,
the company remains strongly committed to
the development of innovative standard products
at the module, board and system levels. At
Embedded World, for example, the company
will unveil its new Spider-SP motherboard utilising
the 2.5 inch Pico-ITX form factor. In com-
March 2009 12
bination with a 2.5-inch hard drive, the Spider-
SP enables the development of extremely small
designs with a height of just 40mm. Based on
the Intel Atom Z5xx processor and the Intel
System controller hub US15W, the optimized
thermal design of the board makes it an attractive
alternative to RISC-based systems.
The Kontron JRexplus-DC is a new 3.5-inch
single board computer following the open JRexplus
standard. Based on the 1.6 GHz Intel
Atom N270 processor, it offers high performance
at comparatively low energy consumption
(approximately 10W). With its larger footprint,
it offers more features than the Spider-SP.
Most notable is the PCI-104 interface. PCIbased
PCI-104 expansion cards are inserted
parallel to the CPU board which is extremely
space-saving and ideal for SFF devices.
Continuing the trend towards smaller, more
energy-saving designs, the new Kontron Nano
Clients are a family of cost-optimized and all-round
IP66 protected fanless standalone touch-panel
PCs based on the energy-saving embedded 45nm
Intel Atom Z5xx processors. The VESA mounting
system enables plant operators to easily mount the
slimline (only 63 mm deep) and fully sealed
Kontron Nano Clients wherever they need them.
Kontron’s first VPX products will also be presented
that will supplement the already extensive
offering of VME boards and systems. In the
telecoms sector, Kontron is extending its system
portfolio with a new family of rack-mount
servers consisting of NEBS-3 and ETSI-compliant
carrier-grade servers as well as IP network servers.
These products will supplement the CompactPCI,
MicroTCA and AdvancedTCA systems. ■
your MATLAB algorithm in order to
achieve faster results. Additionally, we will
show how to use numeric systems optimisations
for various tasks.
Since FPGA/ASIC technology is becoming increasingly
important for series production and
fast prototyping, automatic HDL generation
through MATLAB, Simulink and Stateflow is
gaining in importance as well. Connections with
large emulators enable a cosimulation between
algorithm and its resources on the chip. Industrial
automation, mechanical engineering as well
as medical engineering are the trend-setters in
embedded design right now. Embedded design
is also advancing in the automotive industry, as
electronics and cross-linking in vehicles play an
increasingly important role. Companies and development
departments recognize that integrating
requirements into the embedded development
process at an early stage helps to avoid
mistakes. Detecting mistakes earlier makes
them easier and less expensive to fix, which results
in a higher quality product. A second trend
is the increasing importance of security-relevant
mechatronic applications.
The MathWorks replies to these trends by
providing engineers with the ability to test their
systems using simulation, as well as the ability
to optimize their entire system (controller,
physical system, and communications system)
in a single software environment. We support
the development of security-relevant applica-
tions using model-based design with a workflow
that has been TÜV certificated together
with Real-Time Workshop Embedded Coder
2008. The MathWorks helps companies save development
costs, which is especially important
in economically tough times. The tools provide
investment protection - the results your development
teams produce are re-usable in other
projects and programs. Thus, it is possible that
algorithms written in MATLAB can be scaled
on cluster without difficulty or brought as Embedded
MATLAB via C-code generation on
embedded systems. Additionally, the increasing
automation in our tools helps to complete recurring
tasks accurately and quickly, as well as
to simplify and accelerate manual operations
such as model reviews.
The availability of Simulink Fixed Point 6 is a
major upgrade within the Simulink product
family. The new version delivers capabilities for
designing and simulating fixed-point systems
and generating optimized code for implementation,
while creating more efficient work-
March 2009 14
flows. It enables engineers to quickly turn a
floating-point design built in Simulink, Stateflow,
Embedded MATLAB functions, Signal
Processing Blockset, and Video and Image
Processing Blockset into a fixed-point design
based on input data ranges and target hardware
characteristics.
The new version can be used with MathWorks
Real-Time Workshop Embedded Coder to
generate bit-accurate production code from
fixed-point models, ensuring the implemented
design performs exactly as it did in simulation.
Code can be generated for signals and parameters
with word sizes from one to 128 bits,
accelerating simulation modes and enabling
embedded code deployment. Designers can
now develop and implement algorithms for
modern digital signal processors (DSPs) and
microprocessors, which offer large accumulator
and integer word sizes for high degrees of
numerical range and precision.
Additionally, the advisor feature in Simulink
Fixed Point 6 moves design from floating- to
fixed-point using an automated system conversion
approach, that creates optimized workflows
in shorter time spans. This in turn facilitates
more accurate and cost-effective design of
high-end, mass-production components,
especially in the signal processing segment.
Users in industries like automotive, communications,
and electronics are constantly looking
for simulations that exactly replicate realworld
behaviour as a means to generate reliable
results in shorter time frames. Simulink Fixed
Point 6 can now be used as a foundation
product to assess and optimize fixed-point
behaviour based on design ranges and to
model implementations accurately, and is available
for the Microsoft Windows, Solaris, Linux,
and Macintosh platforms. ■
MCU debugging tools are changing
with deep submicron processes
By Rob Cosaro, NXP
■ Microcontrollers are general-purpose
devices that need software to make them
application-specific. In order to make the
software work it needs to be debugged. In the
beginning, debugging consisted of inserting
software break points and observing what
happened on the outside with a scope or
some other observation tool. This worked
well for simple microcontrollers with small
memory footprints and simple peripherals,
but as memory sizes increased to support
more sophisticated cores and peripherals
the technique was no longer adequate. Better
debugging tools were needed.
One solution was emulators and bond outs,
where the device was replaced on a board with
something that emulated the microcontroller.
The emulator was a box that contained an interface
between the host computer and the
bond out. The bond out was a device produced
by the semiconductor manufacturer that had
extra pins and hardware hooks so the emulator
could control the processor and gain access to
all the internal registers. For semiconductor
manufacturers, having to produce bond outs
for different device derivatives was always an expensive
solution. A new bond out was needed
for devices with a new peripheral set, which
doubled the mask cost. In addition, this was a
distraction from the main goal of producing
more derivatives with diverse peripherals. For
this and other reasons semiconductor manufacturers
needed a better solution. This emerged
in stages through three debugging trends.
Debugging Trend 1: Microcontroller processes
progressed to span the 0.18 to 0.09 micron
process nodes. The first problem was to come
up with a debug interface that did not require
many pins. Several serial interfaces have
emerged depending on the processor, but ARM
has standardized on the JTAG standard. Even
though JTAG was meant for boundary scan, it
is very useful for debug purposes. When these
serial solutions first appeared, debugging
through them was fairly simple, such as starting
and stopping the processor and setting a few
hardware break points. They started being
implemented in the 0.35 to 0.25 micron process
nodes. The silicon area required for more than
these simple debug features was possible, but
the densities provided by these earlier nodes
were not cost-effective in adding more debug
features. Today microcontroller processes are
spanning the 0.18 to 0.09 micron process
nodes. The 0.18 micron node is 6 times denser
than the 0.35 micron node. With these kinds of
densities more debug features are possible
without having a significant impact on cost.
Debugging Trend 2: Now all the pieces have
come together, and emulator-like features of the
past are becoming available on silicon in
sophisticated low-cost microcontrollers. Lowcost
ARM7 microcontrollers started to appear
in the early 2000 timeframe based on the
ARM7 TDMI core. The core includes embedded
ICE logic for on-chip debug support.
Through the ARM7 JTAG interface the embedded
ICE logic can control the ARM7 core,
and read and write to all the memory registers
and memory locations the core has access to. In
addition, the core includes two hardware break
points and two watch points. Watch points
consists of comparitors that will cause the
processor to halt based on a data match or a
program counter match. Although the core
does not have unlimited numbers, such as
March 2009 16
emulators provided, the number of break
points or watch points the ARM7 core provides
is adequate for most debug requirements. The
ARM7 core also has an optional TRACE macro
cell called the embedded trace module called
the ETM. The ETM adds approximately 10K
gates of logic, which would be significant for a
0.35 micron design but is very manageable in
0.18 micron. The ETM broadcasts the instruction
trace information showing the flow of execution.
The only issue with the ETM is that it
requires 10 pins and is typically multiplexed
with user pin functions, and the speed of the
trace is limited by the slew rates of the pads.
Debugging Trend 3: Introduction of the embedded
trace buffer. Another option to external
pins and to improve trace speed, is for the
ETM to have a trace buffer on silicon and read
the trace information out through the JTAG
port. This buffer consists of a single-port
RAM and is referred to as the embedded trace
buffer or ETB. As with traditional emulators,
the amount of code that can be traced is based
on the memory depth of the external hardware,
which could be unlimited. However, the size of
the ETB limits how much code can be traced.
For example, the NXP LPC3250 uses the ETB
concept and includes 8k bytes of trace buffers.
Whentraceisrequired8kisusuallyadequate,
but the user may have to narrow the trace
searches before the problem can be found.
When there is a difficult problem the more
trace depth the better. This creates a cost
trade-off for trace buffer size and ease of debugging.
It is a waste of silicon to use the trace
buffers only for trace, so the buffers can be used
by the application.
In conclusion, on-chip debug solutions have replaced
the functionality of emulators because of
the advancements in process technology. These
advancements will allow semiconductor manufacturers
to include many more useful debug
features to improve application development.
These extra features will include more hardware
break points and watch points, bigger trace
buffers, and multi-core debug as well as the
capability to monitor internal bus activity. ■

Is open source software putting
businesses at risk?
By Richard Kirk, Fortify Software
■ Businesses today are built and operated by
software that houses intellectual property, business
processes and trade secrets that are vital to
the health of an enterprise. Organisations must
address potential weaknesses in their everyday
operations before they become exploitable.
It is the ultimate irony: the versatile software
you depend on to run your business also puts
it at risk. Your business applications hold the
business processes and the data that form the
lifeblood of your company. Yet, even as they
open your business up to more customers and
partners, the security holes your software contains
leave you vulnerable to attack. Relentless
and destructive data predators are ready to
pounce. Today hackers, organised crime cartels
and enemy nations are highly adept at quickly
turning security flaws into stolen data and cash.
I am not in the habit of finger pointing over
flaws in packages – let us face it we all know that
application bugs exist, the only real question is
why? Open source development introduces
risk to your business in unique ways. The inexpensive
and readily available nature of open
source makes it easy to adopt. But at what cost
to enterprise security?
A Fortify-sponsored Open Source Security
Study, completed by leading application security
consultant Larry Suto, examined 11 of the
most common Java open source packages. It
confirmed that the most widely-used open
source software packages for the enterprise are
exposing users to significant and unnecessary
business risk. The study validates that open
source software (OSS) development communities
have yet to adopt a secure development
process and often leave dangerous vulnerabilities
unaddressed. Additionally, it found that
nearly all OSS communities fail to provide users
with access to security expertise to help remediate
these vulnerabilities and security risks.
The study sparked debate on a number of topics
related to OSS that anyone in IT or enter-
prise security should understand. The response
to the report set off some familiar refrains,
which miss the point and do not get us any
closer towards the goal of a secure enterprise.
Improving the engineering process of building
secure code applies to every software project,
whether it is open source or closed, and it is not
important who writes the code, but how. Any
competent engineering team will be able to
generate secure code if security is made a part of
the design, just as they are able to bring a lowcost
solution to market, or a high-performance
solution. From Fortify’s vantage point it sees literally
thousands of development teams, and it is
fair to say they are mostly within IT organisations
for financial and other highly regulated industries
that have a very sophisticated process in place for
application security. In the current open source
model, yes, those of us who care about security
can feed vulnerabilities back into the machine, or
fix them ourselves, but it will never be as sound
as building it securely in the first place.
Recently, the icon of OSS development, Linus
Torvalds, emailed the Linux development team,
weighing in on the quality vs. security debate.
In his email, Torvalds argued that “In fact, all
the boring normal bugs are way more important,
just because there's a lot more of them.”
Although it is true to say that quality and
security are both important, I strongly disagree
with Torvalds for the following reasons: quali-
ty is cumulative whilst security is absolute.
Quality is about making the main path of operation
work, and accepting issues in the corner
cases, whereas security must cover everything.
Quality is a closed problem, however security is
open. There is no list of known bugs you can go
to and accept for security, as criminals compile
these lists and they do not share them. Quality
is reinforced by customers in the open market.
Traditionally, companies have largely depended
on perimeter-based approaches like network
security to prevent data predators and criminals
from gaining access to corporate information.
However, the demands of open business envi-
ronment weaken the protection provided by
firewalls and other perimeter security efforts,
leaving corporation applications easily accessible
and vulnerable to hackers. In order to mitigate
the business risk created by insecure applications,
it is imperative that companies
adopt a process that allows them to assess, remedy
and prevent security vulnerabilities in all of
their business software, whatever the source.
Business software assurance (BSA) is a growing
techniques that enable you to maximise the
New opportunities for modern
embedded computing platforms
By Christian Eder, congatec
■ While it is likely that the much-discussed economic
crisis will also affect the electronics industry,
the impact need not be negative in all
cases. Additional growth will almost certainly
be seen in certain sub-sectors. On average, the
computer-on-module market (i.e. PC modules
for industrial integration) has been growing annually
by 25% for a number of years and will,
in my opinion, benefit from this recent crisis. As
in 2002, the 2009 crisis will accelerate the trend
towards outsourcing. This will lead to some
companies switching their complete proprietary
developments over to modular concepts
in order to save development costs for the PC
functionality of the application.
What may at first appear to represent a loss of
expertise will actually strengthen the focus on
core competencies. The in-house, applicationspecific
know-how will be integrated in the carrier
board while the entire PC functionality will
be purchased in the form of an embedded computer
module and mounted on the carrier
board. This approach reduces personnel costs
for development and brings with it a number of
other benefits. In addition to shorter development
times, the module-based solutions can be
highly flexible when it comes to configuring.
With just a single carrier board design, it is possible
to create an entire product family merely
by varying the computing power of the modules.
The ability to react to new processor and
chipset technologies can also be ensured simply
by exchanging modules. Since the modular
concepts are standardized, changing the mod-
ule vendor is facilitated, thereby providing
multiple sources. The modular concept employed
depends mainly on the application itself.
I recommend the XTX standard for users of
ETX solutions. The structure of XTX is practically
identical to that of ETX. The only difference
is that the ISA bus has been replaced with
signals for PCI Express and SATA. This makes
it relatively simple to update existing ETX carrier
boards to the latest technology. COM Express
offers powerful CPUs and chipsets and a
“How do you know your business is secure?”
By identifying and resolving your most
critical application vulnerabilities you can enhance
software assurance. Ultimately, the solution
is developers and security experts working
together to build secure software right from the
start. Fortify is already in discussions with open
source providers with whom it is working to
improve processes, and I invite any open source
group who would like to get involved in these
conversations, and make security a part of the
development process, to get in touch. ■
These modules measure just 95x95 mm² and
feature the COM Express connector and pinout.
The even smaller, comparatively new Qseven
standard was created to fulfil the needs of mobile
systems. With dimensions of just 70x70mm²,
Qseven may be the smallest member of the computer-on-module
family but it also provides the
most modern and future-oriented range of interfaces.
It is specifically designed to operate with
absolute minimum power consumption, and is
the ideal platform for energy saving or batterypowered
applications. The rugged high-speed
and low-cost MXM connector is available from
three different manufacturers, guaranteeing best
price and availability.
The reduction of power consumption in general
is becoming more and more important.
While the car industry is still struggling to create
more economical vehicles, the computer industry
already offers high-efficiency solutions.
The Intel Atom processor family offers a very
reasonable computing performance with extremely
low power consumption. These processors
can be operated with almost no cooling
and are therefore an ideal platform for industrial
and mobile use. It is clear those applications
with extreme temperature requirements
(typical examples can be found in the transportation
and automotive industries) can be
fulfilled utilizing these new technologies. First
products with an extended temperature range
will be exhibited during the Embedded World
trade show at the congatec booth 12-122. ■

Hpe_JTAG from Gleichmann is a tool for
interactive debugging of printed circuit
boards, including those with ball grid
arrays. It enables full use of the possibilities
of the IEEE Standard 1149.1 at much less
cost than high-end JTAG tools. It offers a
comfortable graphical user interface and
automation of repetitive tasks.
■ Let us refresh our memory and take a quick
look at the IEEE Standard 1149.1 “Test Access
Port and Boundary-Scan Architecture”, released
back in 1990. The “Joint Test Access
Group” (JTAG) defined test logic for integration
in semiconductor components, enabling
self testing, non-intrusive signal observation, as
well as testing interconnects between components.
This test logic is uniformly described by
the boundary scan description language
(BSDL). BSDL is a subset of the hardware description
language VHDL (very large scale integration
hardware description language). For
a device to be JTAG-compliant, it must have an
associated BSDL file.
With Hpe_JTAG, Gleichmann Electronics
Research (GER) introduces a tool that makes
full use of the specifications and possibilities of
the IEEE Standard 1149.1 at a fraction of the
cost of expensive high-end JTAG tools,
currently with entry-level pricing of less than
400 euros. In developing this tool, great
emphasis has been placed on filter functions,
the ability to import pin files from FPGA synthesis,
and automation/extension capabilities
via a scripting interface.
Besides supporting all obligatory JTAG instructions
(BYPASS, SAMPLE, EXTEST),
Hpe_JTAG also supports INTEST, provided it
is supported by the device. Simply plug in one
of the supported JTAG cables, connect with the
target board and you are ready to get started.
Some fundamental testing is already performed
when initializing the JTAG chain: IDs of the devices
in the chain are read and compared to expected
IDs specified by the user. If not already
available, BSDL files must now be imported.
Hpe_JTAG users can rely on a comfortable
graphical user interface for the interactive de-
bugging of PCBs. Moreover, repetitive tasks can
be automated via a powerful scripting interface.
Figure 1 shows the graphical presentation of a
JTAG chain containing two devices. Each device
is presented by a tab. Changing between devices
is achieved by clicking on the tabs. Filter functions
allow the user to observe only I/Os that
are currently of interest. For example this
could be the configuration bits, if FPGA configuration
fails or the clock and reset inputs, if
the design shows absolutely no activity. In this
context the capability to load pin names from
BSDL or pin files (generated during PLD synthesis)
comes in handy.
Special purpose I/Os such as configuration or
clock inputs can be found easily by simply loading
the pin names from the BSDL files of the
manufacturer. However, the majority of I/Os
are user I/Os typically just numbered consecutively,
for example IOY0 to IOYn.
A designer can probably not remember that
he/she put the signal TX_CLK on pin W21, but
in most cases the signal name indicates the
functionality of the signal. For this reason the
tool supports importing manufacturer-specific
pin files. Typically FPGA designers test their
pin-outs with dummy designs before going into
PCB layout. So it is fair to assume that pin files
are available at the time a board is powered up
Figure 1. The graphical presentation of a JTAG chain containing
two devices
for the first time. The JTAG tool automatically
recognizes all major FPGA vendors and allows
importing pin files in the appropriate format.
After importing pin files, Hpe_JTAG will know
the physical pin location of every I/O of the
HDL top-level entity. Signals of a bus can be
grouped together and represented in your preferred
format (digital, hex, etc). The clear signal
arrangement immediately answers questions
like: Is there activity on clock lines or address
and data buses?
Do observation and expectation match, e.g.
does a counter count in the right direction? Are
reset lines active? Are reset values as expected?
Whenever tasks are repetitive, for example
when testing limited lot productions, the the
Python-based Hpe_JTAG scripting interface
can be used to automate tasks. The interface allows
any JTAG access: testing interconnects, setting
control signals, read/write accesses to registers,
flash or SDRAM, etc. Here are a few examples.
An FPGA with N user I/Os combined
with the JTAG tool could be used as (admittedly
very slow) N-channel logic analyzer. If the required
sampling rate cannot be achieved with
JTAG, the sampled signals can be stored in the
TECHNICAL TRENDS
FPGA RAM and read out
offline with Hpe_JTAG. Generating
a certain response
from a device under test requires
precise and repeatable
stimulus on its inputs. In the
case of our example FPGA,
the differences between two
points in time (time periods)
are stored in one RAM and
stimulus is stored in another
RAM. These RAMs are
loaded with Hpe_JTAG and
if necessary are modified.
This pattern generator is only
limited by the width and
depth of the memory available
on the FPGA. When
changing FPGA vendors or
transitioning to an ASIC
technology, the user can reap the fruits of his or
her labor. There is no need to become
acquainted with new tools, since the proven
scripts and solutions are technology-independent
and can easily be mapped from one
technology to another.
Besides the application examples described, the
scripting interface could be used as standardized
debug interface for internal processes. If
actual and nominal conditions still do not
match after verifying the basic functionality of
your board and IC, you may use the JTAG tool
to monitor external signals, internal trace-
RAMs or complex state machines. Information
converging in the tool could than be exported
in any format for displaying or further processing.
For example the industry-standard
value change dump (VCD) format proved to be
very useful when exchanging data between
various simulators and technologies. Patterns
extracted with the JTAG tool from your target
hardware can be exported in VCD format and
displayed and analyzed in simulators or waveform
viewers, such as ModelSim. Thus
Hpe_JTAG is used to connect the different
domains of hardware, software and RTL code. ■
DISTRIBUTION CONCEPTS
Distribution concepts for
the embedded market
■ Nowadays embedded systems design is a challenging
task. Resources in the design departments
are limited, systems are getting more complex
and in parallel the pressure on time-to-market is
increasing. Distribution has recognized this
dilemma of the designers and therefore more and
more Distributors are offering specific services for
the embedded market.
Rutronik: complete embedded
systems solutions from a single
source
Rutronik (at Embedded World in Hall 9, Stand
435) showcases itself as a solutions provider
supplying its target markets with customised
total solutions, along with solar power, e-metering,
hybrid drive, street lighting, wireless
building and security applications, as well as
LEDs and TFTs. The customised systems incorporate
every component, from the motherboard,
the storage media, to the display unit,
embedded board, disk drive and cabling, and
include accessories such as inverters and touch
controllers. Franchise partners are selected by
strict quality criteria in order to guarantee that
customers will always be supplied with highquality
components. Moreover, the technical
expertise offered to customers in an advisory
and support capacity is crucial.
The main growth driver in the embedded systems
sector is the industrial market. This is because
nowadays there is hardly a single machine
and robot control system that comes without a
display unit and intelligent drive control system.
And manufacturers of medical instruments and
point-of-sale and point-of-interest systems increasingly
are opting for simpler and less errorprone
operation for their instruments on display
units. To this end companies require an optimised
solution that is as fast and straightforward
as possible, and which can be installed on the
plug-and-play principle. However this is rarely
achieved using standard solutions. For this reason
Rutronik has more intensively dovetailed its
Displays & Embedded Boards with the industrial
storage components supplied by its subsidiary
Discomp, and has expanded its technical support
services. The benefits for customers are complete
individually tailored embedded systems, comprehensive
technical support, efficient procurement
and warehousing. Visitors to Embedded
World will see tangible evidence of the range of
March 2009 24
complete solutions in the more extensive exhibition
stand, where Swissbit - the manufacturer
of DRAM and flash memory products - will be
exhibiting alongside Discomp - Rutronik’s memory
specialist - and the Embedded Boards and
Displays product division. The latest LED and
TFT technologies will be among the product
highlights. As ever, product specialists from
Rutronik and the manufacturers will be on the
stand to answer specific questions.
In order to be able to answer more challenging
customer enquiries quickly and comprehensively,
Rutronik has set up a technical office. This
will act as internal back-up to product marketing
and the FAEs. For example the technical office
can adapt display units to a customer’s
boards, and test the complete solution. It also assembles
individual kits containing perfectly
coordinated components such as the display
unit, board, inverter, cables, touch screen, RAM,
hard disk, memory card or disk drive. The technical
office is responsible for the demonstration
panels used at Embedded World as well.
By combining Displays & Embedded Boards
with Storage Components, Rutronik can now
offer complete embedded solutions in kit form.
For customers, that means that they need just
one order number, one ordering process, one
contact, one delivered unit - in short: a solution
from a single source. Since, logistically speaking,
the kit is handled as a single unit, customers can
call on individual solutions to assist with warehouse
and procurement optimisation - something
like a consignment store with minimum/maximum
agreements, or the ship-toline
model with units delivered individually to
departments - even to work-stations.
Spoerle: concepts for developers
of embedded solutions
Spoerle, a division of Arrow, will introduce a
modular system solution concept entitled
“Embedded Platform Concept” at Embedded
World at Hall 12/362. According to the distributor
there is much more to this concept than
the technical consulting provided by distribution
development resources and increasingly complex
semiconductor applications and their
constituents, this service offers developers cost
savings and reduced project costs. Using modular
developers technically optimised solutions for
future use, within the framework of this concept.
The modularity enables flexible combinations
of the “Embedded Platform Concept”
can be flexibly accommodated through this
modular structure, in terms of hardware as well
as software. For further support, Spoerle assigns
specialised, external development partners.
In addition to access to innovative technologies,
developers also receive complete and immediately
Avnet Embedded goes for the
next stage of integration
By founding the Avnet embedded business unit
a year ago, Avnet Electronics Marketing EMEA
extended its offering to industrial customers.
Avnet Embedded's (Embedded World in Hall
12, Booth 236) strategy is to provide a comprehensive
solution to those customers who no
longer develop boards themselves, but rather
prefer focusing on their own core expertise. According
to Alessandro Brazzoni, Avnet Embedded
Director of Sales & Operations, a separate
and specialized business channel for Embedded
products is necessary to address the
very specific customer requirements including
product identification and definition, technical
support, system-oriented consulting, and after
sales support. Hence the need of a dedicated
team of specialists with background and expertise
that are system-oriented. The logistics
for board-level products and displays is also
different from that traditionally adopted for
component-level products. This has been taken
Avnet Embedded from the very start.
MSC (at Embedded World in Hall 9, Booth
235) is together with their sister company
Gleichmann Electronics among the top
European components distributors.
The company's business objective is not only to
provide customers with innovative components
by leading manufacturers, but also to assist
them with competent advice and support in
decision-making and selecting components
solutions which are optimal for them”, said
Manfred Schwarztrauber, founder and managing
partner of MSC Vertriebs GmbH. Apart
from the automotive, telecommunication and
medical applications, MSC have always focused
their products and services very strongly on industrial
electronics. Currently, MSC is the official
franchisee of approximately 60 established component
manufacturers, mostly from Asia, America
and Europe. Nevertheless, the company's core
business focuses on product lines requiring substantial
amounts of explanatory support, such as
microcontrollers and microprocessors, programmable
ICs, displays, memory modules,
electromechanical and optoelectronic components
as well as embedded modules.
Manfred Schwarztrauber
Since end of last year MSC runs the online webshop
MSC ToolGuide under www.msc-toolguide.com.
It was realized as user oriented software
combined with integrated shopping cart
functionality. The ToolGuide’s transactions are
accessible in an intuitive and conceptual way. Just
a few mouse clicks and the information will be
displayed. The MSC ToolGuide enables to zoom
in and off the product for details and obtaining
information about technical data. Special
features were created to compare products with
each other. The advantages are clearly visible: no
time required telephoning, fast and easy ordering
via PC and clear structured information.
MSC is also a manufacturer of high-integrated
board-level products. The company supports
open embedded computing standards like
ETX, COM Express and Qseven and has established
the EXM32 computer-on-module specification
for industrial environment. Based on
Intel's newest Core 2 Duo and Atom processor
families MSC has recently introduced the lowpower
computer-on-modules CXC-GS45 and
CXB-A945M. With the embedded module
MSC Q7-US15W in the form factor 70 x 70
mm MSC is one of the first manufacturers offering
a product based on the new Qseven standard.
The compact module integrates an Intel
Atom processor and is suited for fanless or
mobile applications. The MSC Programming
‘ECOmise it’ - energy efficiency as
a competitive advantage
EBV Elektronik (Embedded World in Hall 9,
Booth163) has aligned its corporate philosophy
to environmentally compatible trading: committed
to environmental protection. The company
declares: “Environmental protection is not
just an ecological responsibility for EBV Elektronik,
but a competitive advantage too. Only
those who set new ecological standards are successful
in business!”
BAT: best accessible technology. This voluntary
commitment has benefits for the design departments
of EBV’s customers. For example,
EBV Elektronik has created the BAT of its own
accord. EBV's technical specialists award the
BAT certificate to all of a manufacturer’s
products that achieve a particularly advanced
level of development with respect to energy efficiency.
BAT focuses chiefly on products that
operate with especially low power consumption
as well as products which directly ensure that a
system’s power consumption is particularly low.
EBV publishes precise details of the BAT
selection criteria on the Internet at
www.ebv.com/bat.
Thanks to the BAT certificate, which EBV ensures
constantly reflects best accessible technology,
and the FAEs at EBV, developers can
also be up-to-date at all times in the matter of
low power. Therefore, EBV is the strategic partner
for practically all questions concerning
green engineering. For this reason, the distributor’s
FAEs are also (pro)actively involved in
implementing energy-saving designs. On the
basis of the input and output parameters specified
by the developer, the FAEs provide concrete
recommendations, which optimally reflect
the BAT philosophy. Added to this is the designin-support
in the traditional sense. Green engineering
is a good approach but only if the
green philosophy is implemented within companies
on a long-term basis. For this reason,
EBV Elektronik has created internal ‘ECOmiseit’
environmental guidelines that apply across
the company. In addition to saving resources and recycling, these guidelines
also concern climate neutrality, control and partnership as well as
selected project sponsoring. For example, EBV Elektronik offsets the
CO2 emitted by its employees during business trips with suitable environmental
projects. EBV takes this extremely seriously, as demonstrated
by the fact that once a year EBV provides information on the implementation
of its self-imposed environmental targets in its ‘ECOmise
it-Report’ and publishes its set targets for the following year.
ARM controller, GSM, OLED and LED-backlight displays
At Embedded World high-tech distributor GLYN will be presenting
innovative products and technical know-how in Hall 12, Booth 306. The
new ARM controller from GLYN-partner Toshiba is definitely a special
feature at this year´s trade show. But the top-notch LED-backlight displays
and the trendsetting OLED displays will also be interesting new
product highlights at the GLYN stand.
The Toshiba ROMless microcontroller TMPA910CRAXBG with an
ARM9 core and on-chip graphics processor will surely be one of the
main products to see. The ARM926EJ-S-Core used in this controller
was specifically developed for applications which need high performance
and have to drive enhanced display technologies such as TFTs or
OLEDs. A high capacity LCD Data Process Accelerator (LCDDA) supports
the graphics controller. The LCDDA works independently from
the core and LCD-controller and offers new functionalities which can
be categorized into scaler, picture rotation and image mixing.
Other important features are a touch screen interface (TSI), USB2.0 high
speed and full speed as well as a CMOS sensor interface (CMSI). For a
quick start with the Toshiba ARM9 family, GLYN offers a development
kit including everything needed for implementing the display application.
It is the lowest priced starter kit in this performance category.
ROMless microcontroller with ARM9 core
DISTRIBUTION CONCEPTS
At the GLYN stand you will get an impression of the brilliant colours
of active matrix OLED displays from CMEL (Chi Mei EL Corporation).
The complete product portfolio from 2.0" to 7.6" displays will be
demonstrated in an “OLED-garden”. Unlike LCD Technology, OLEDs
do not need backlights and offer higher contrasts combined with wide
viewing angles (~180°), a high contrast ratio (up to 10,000:1) and excellent
response time. Due to the low power consumption at an adjusted
graphics interface, light weight, small dimensions (2mm thin) and the
broad temperature range (-20° to +75°C) AM-OLEDs are ideal for
handheld applications.
The TFT displays with LED-backlight from Toshiba and EDT will show
visitors at the GLYN stand how their applications can do without the
CCFL-tube and the necessary inverter. LEDs are easier to dim and offer
lifetime and brightness values similar to those of conventional CCFLtubes.
Therefore, the environmentally hazardous mercury can be
