Alma Mater “to Denison”
Recessional
to Denison, we raise our song
Fair College on the hill,
the name that sets our souls on fire,
And makes our senses thrill,
to Denison, my Denison,
In praise our voices swell,
the scene of happy college days,
the home we love so well.
Graduates are listed alphabetically under the degree they are receiving,
Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts. In some
cases, a student may earn more than one bachelor’s degree during his or
her undergraduate years. the student’s major(s) are listed to the right of
his or her name, with a concentration indicated within parentheses. Directly
below each name is the student’s hometown. Senior Honors Projects
titles appear in italics underneath the hometown, along with the name
and terminal degree of the faculty supervisor(s).
President’s Medalists wear gold medals awarded to them in recognition
of their status. Students graduating as members of the Honors Program
wear bronze medals. Students designated in this program as graduates of
the Honors Program have achieved a 3.4 grade point average by the end
of the sophomore year and maintained it through their senior year, have
taken at least four Honors seminars during their Denison career and have
completed an Honors project. Student members of Mortar Board, a national
honor society that recognizes college seniors for their achievements
in scholarship, leadership and service, wear gold tassels on their caps.
Music for the program was coordinated by the Denison Department
of Music. today’s processionals are selections chosen from The Water
Music (1717) and Music for the Royal Fireworks (1749) by George Frideric
Handel (1685-1759). A Knobel Fanfare is based on the letters of President
Knobel’s first and last names. Community: A Fanfare for the Class of 2005
is an original composition by Assistant Professor of Music Ching-chu
Hu. Musical selections are being performed by Daniel Strawser ’06, cello;
James van reeth and Noah Gall ’06, violins; Carl McCoy ’07, viola; Jed
Hudson and Professor thomas Evans (Chemistry), trombones; Assistant
Professor Nicolas del Grazia (Music), percussion; Ben Huntoon, trumpet.
the group is conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Andrew Carlson.
the Chapel bell ringer is Jesse Adam Koza ’07.
Program Notes
3
Written by v.E. Field, Class of 1903, and led by Class of 2005
Denison Chamber Singers Chad robert Forster, Anusha Jogi,
Brandon Paul ringler and Jonathan David Webb, and theatre
Workshop members Jennifer Anne Hart, and Elaine rebecca
Martin, with accompanist robert G. Seith ’74.
Parents or friends taking pictures of graduates receiving diplomas are
asked to use the special section designated for this purpose.
Flowers for the Commencement activities were designed by the village
Flower Basket, Granville, Ohio. Interpretive signing is being provided by
Sarah McKinney aned Cherish vanEmon of Hallenross & Associates.
the program concludes when the platform party and faculty have
recessed. the audience and graduates are asked to remain seated during
the recessional. In the event that Commencement exercises are held in
Mitchell recreation and Athletics Center, the graduates will also recess.
Academic Regalia
the academic costume which makes the Commencement procession so
colorful is more than 800 years old, dating back to the days when students
were “clerks,” (members of the minor clergy) and wore monkish gowns and
hoods. In those days of unheated classrooms and garret sleeping quarters,
the hoods were used to keep the wearers warm. the “tippet” on the end
of the hood could also be used as a convenient pocket. today, the hood
is used only as an ornament.
Both the gown and the hood indicate the degree held by the wearer,
or the degree about to be received. the gown for the bachelor’s degree
has pointed sleeves and no trimming. the master’s gown also has pointed
sleeves but they are slit at the elbow; it also is untrimmed. the doctor’s
gown has bell-shaped sleeves adorned with chevrons and is faced down
the front with velvet. Graduates of some institutions wear gowns in the
color(s) of the university which awarded their degrees.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, George Bogdanovitch has
created many millions of impressions on viewers of his art over
the years. A member of the Denison Art Department faculty since
1972, Bogdanovitch has taught both studio art and art history
courses and has produced a prodigious amount of work that has
been exhibited widely in the United States in galleries in New
york, Boulder, Los Angeles, Dayton, toledo and Columbus. He is
associated with the r.H. Love Gallery in Chicago and his art also
can be found in numerous corporate and private collections in the
United States and abroad.
A native of Dunellen, N.J., Bogdanovitch earned a B.A. in philosophy
from rutgers University (1955) and M.F.A. in painting
and drawing from the University of Iowa (1964) where he studied
with Hans Hoffman and Allan Kaprow. He also took courses in
Art History at Oberlin College from 1956 to 1958. Before joining
Denison’s faculty, he taught both undergraduate and graduate
students and was gallery director at Washington State University,
and also worked at Cedar Crest College (Allentown, Pa.), Bowling
Green State University and the University of Arkansas.
Bogdanovitch’s early work is representative of his training in the
1950s and reflects abstract expressionism where rhythmic brushstrokes
created colorful grids. Between 1985 and 1988, supported
by grants from the Denison University research Foundation and
the Good Fellowship, he created representational images of the
New Jersey shore from 1900 to 1945 in 19 works he called “the
Boardwalk Series” that appeared in Burke Hall in 1988. the fol-
Marjorie Chan has delighted audiences with her cello virtuosity
in solo and chamber music recitals in California, Indiana, Maine,
rhode Island and Ohio, particularly here in the Denison Chamber
Music Sundae Series, of which she is the founder, director and a
performer. Chan initiated these concerts to introduce works for
small ensemble to new listeners as well as chamber music aficionados,
all of whom could enjoy informative commentary and good
music. She describes the series as “a sweet sampler of old and new
musical favorites for new and experienced listeners.” She notes
that it also gave students the opportunity to watch their teachers
in performance to get a better understanding of what they do and
to hear instruments played in a variety of combinations.
A native of Lebanon, Pa., Chan was awarded a Bachelor of
Music degree in cello from Oberlin College (1961) after studying
at the Oberlin Conservatory and the Mozarteum in Salzburg,
Austria. While earning a Master of Music degree at Indiana
University (1963), she studied with Bernard Greenhouse and
the legendary Janos Starker. At the University of Southern
California at Los Angeles where she earned her doctoral degree
(1968), she also studied with Gabor rejto. Before joining
Denison’s Department of Music in 1968 as an Assistant Professor,
Chan was an instructor at Memphis State University from
1963 to 1965. At Denison she was promoted to Associate Professor
in 1976 and Professor in 1986. She particularly enjoyed
teaching first-year students and her seminar for them, “Image,
Imagery, Imagination,” that examined ways in which composers
communicate their ideas to the listener.
lowing year it was also presented as a one-man show in the r.H.
Love Gallery in Chicago. the 8- by 10- foot acrylic paintings were
meant to reflect the joyous life in his childhood spent on boardwalks,
fishing piers and beaches.
By 1991, he was again painting abstractions of landscape imagery,
completing 19 large paintings, nine of which were included
in a Denison faculty multimedia exhibit. In 1994, Bogdanovitch
described his 55-piece “Antarctica Series” as his effort to “express
nature, not to copy it, since nature is much more significant than
man.” In his “requiem Series” shown in Burke Gallery in 1998,
Bogdanovitch focused on man rather than landscape, but in the
context of the grave. He allowed the painting process to create the
imagery and used a glazing technique to build layers of dark pigments
over lighter ones to give luminosity to the works.
In his 2003 exhibit, “Pushing It,” he returned to abstract expressionism,
creating 6 by 8-foot canvases of bright colored acrylic
paint, some of which was applied with janitor’s push brooms as he
tried to discover exciting ways to get paint on the canvas. In January
this year, Bogdanovitch joined with Assistant Professors of Art
Micaela vivero and Carrie Olsen in an exhibit at Burke Hall titled
“tangents.” His work reflected the influence of abstract expressionist
Hans Hoffman and his passion for vibrant tones, as he manipulated
the paint medium by painting over students’ abandoned paintings
on stretched canvas.
Bogdanovitch served as chair of the Art Department from 1972 to
1979 and Coordinator of the Arts in 1973-74 and 1974-77.
Chan was awarded national certification by the Music teachers
of America and state certification by the Ohio Music teachers of
America (OMtA). Her cello students have won honors at the
Buckeye auditions and have competed in the state OMtA competitions.
She regularly adjudicates competitions and auditions in the
Central Ohio region for both cello and viola. Without the demands
of class schedules, she plans to teach more private lessons, attend
more concerts and read more books.
Chan became a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
in 1972 and has signed up to play with them this summer for their
“Picnic with the Pops” series. She has performed with the Salzburg
Symphony (Austria) and the San Jose Symphony (California).
Locally, she has served as principal cellist of the Licking County
Symphony and the Land of Legend Symphony orchestras and
assisted other Ohio orchestras in Columbus (Pro Musica), Lima,
Mount vernon, Muskingum and Delaware.
For many years, she performed and taught cello, solo, chamber
and ensemble to students from 11 to 18 years old at the New England
Music Camp in Maine during the summer; she continues to
direct annual cello workshops at the Crestmont Conservatory in
San Mateo, Calif.
Along with being a musician who loves to learn from performing,
Chan thrives on being in the audience to hear live performances
and frequently travels across the country to attend concerts and
music seminars. In early summer she’ll be in California to attend
the Gregor Piatigorsky Seminar for cellists and follow that with
former teacher Irving Klein’s Series for string players.

Professor of Philosophy David Goldblatt earned a doctoral degree
from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972 with a dissertation on
“Wittgenstein, rules and Logical Necessity.” He did his undergraduate
work at Brooklyn College of the City University of New york
and graduated with honors in philosophy, receiving the John Pickett
turner Award in Philosophy. Before that, at the age of 16, he entered
the School of Architecture at the Pratt Institute of technology, where
he studied for two years before turning toward the humanities.
In his 37-year career in Denison’s Philosophy Department
he has taught courses in Aesthetics, Contemporary British and
American Philosophy, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche and Social/Political
Philosophy. He has written extensively for a number of scholarly
journals, including The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism (where
he has published five articles and numerous reviews), The Southern
Journal of Philosophy, Film and Philosophy, Philosophy and Literature,
The McNeese Review, Historical Reflections/Reflexions Historiques,
Anfione Zeto, Art Issues, The Personalist, and Arts and Architecture
among others. His work has appeared in the Oxford Encyclopedia
of Aesthetics, The Encyclopedia of American Scholars and in the collections
Television Aesthetics and What is Architecture? Goldblatt’s
writing has also appeared in The Village Voice, The Soho News,
Goldmine, Columbus Alive, Columbus Monthly Magazine, Columbus
Art, and The Realist, and his fiction and poetry have appeared in
the British journals Ambit and Bananas and in the Pig Iron Press
issue on baseball. He received grants from the Ohio Arts Council
for writing fiction.
His book Aesthetics: A Reader in Philosophy of the Arts, Prentice
Hall (co-edited with Lee B. Brown) has recently entered its second
David Goldblatt
Professor Emeritus of Philosophy
32
edition. this summer, his book Art and Ventriloquism, in the series
“Critical voices: Art, theory and Culture,” will be published by
routledge. there, Goldblatt examines the “complex art of ventriloquism”
and its metaphorical relationship with art, philosophy
and the artistic process. One forthcoming article is “Language on
the Lam(b): tarantula in Dylan and Nietzsche,” which Goldblatt
co-authored with a former student, to be included in Bob Dylan and
Philosophy in the popular series published by Open Court.
Goldblatt will return to China in June on the Mellon Grant
“Ethnic Identity in Western China and Inner Mongolia,” having
taught at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou five years ago. Also, he
was part of an AsiaNetwork project in China in 1998. Goldblatt
is appreciative of both the robert C. Good Fellowships and the
development grants Denison provided him. His 2004-2005 Good
Fellowship has enabled him to write on what philosophers call
“performatives” or “speech acts” and their implications for the
visual arts.
Goldblatt says his main energies always have been placed in
his teaching. He has taught numerous Honors Program courses
and in many of these introduced students to philosophical issues
in architecture, film and literature. Also, he has taught Denison
He plans to continue doing philosophy, to do plenty of travel and
to watch the Mets try to play baseball. With his wife Sarah, who is
the associate publisher of the Columbus Alive newspaper, he hopes to
spend time with his cat Fenway, his recently acquired sheltie Zooey,
Rita Esther Snyder
Henry Chisholm Chair in Natural Sciences and Professor Emerita of Psychology
rita Snyder exudes joyousness as she talks about her 32 years
teaching psychology at Denison and all the chances to learn that
it has afforded her. She says, “I have had the opportunity to learn
so many things that I was curious about and then was able to share
those things with my students. I can’t imagine having done anything
else with my life.”
Born in regensburg, Germany, Snyder is a graduate of Eastmoor
High School in Columbus and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
psychology from the University of Michigan (1968). At Indiana
University where she completed a Ph.D. in psychology (1973), she was
a teaching associate and research assistant and was awarded the Lieber
Award for Distinguished teaching in 1972. She joined Denison’s
Department of Psychology in 1973 as an Assistant Professor, was
named Associate Professor in 1979 and Professor in 1991. In 1995,
Snyder was the winner of Denison’s teaching Excellence Award that
is designed to recognize the university’s master teachers. In 2001, she
was named the Henry Chisholm Chair in the Natural Sciences.
An avid learner as well as a talented teacher, Snyder’s research
interests during her years at Denison have been in different areas.
Her graduate work was in tactile psychophysics and her initial
courses were in that subject. She then became interested in consumer
behavior and misleading advertising and created a seminar
on the topic that drew enthusiastic approval from her students.
Subsequently, she agreed to serve as a senior research adviser to a
young woman who planned to do research on body image and eating
disorders. Snyder became fascinated with that subject and did
additional research on it. Her course “Hunger, Goodness, and Beauty:
Biological, Psychological and Sociocultural Aspects of Eating” was
also well received and she frequently was invited by student groups
to give talks on the subject. Most recently she has been investigating
the effects of appearance and actions on social perception.
Statistics also has been a favorite course for Snyder and she has
written papers on a computer laboratory for teaching statistical reasoning.
From 1986 to 1990, she was a member of the Statistics teaching
Staff for the South African Orientation Program on Denison’s campus.
Her task was to prepare groups of South Africans for graduate school
in the United States and to convince them that they were capable
of understanding and succeeding in mathematics. Her delight was
in helping people discover a talent in themselves that they never
imagined and inspired her with a future plan for retirement.
She has been the recipient of many Denison University research
Foundation Grants and Professional Development Grants
and held the robert C. Good research Fellowship in 1989 and
1995. She was chair of the Psychology Department from 1991 to
1994. A member of the American Psychological Association, she
has frequently presented papers at their meetings and has served
on the National Science Foundation Advisory Panel and Graduate
research Fellowship Panel.
Her future will include moving to Utah and the desert Southwest
where initially she will become a student again, indulging herself
as she learns Spanish, geology and archaeology and discovers a way
to work with Native Americans to help them prepare for college.

Professor of Political Science Jules Steinberg has a special affection
for first-year students and by choice has taught Political
Science 204, “Introduction to American Political thought,”
every semester for the past 33 years. He restricts the class to
“freshmen only,” and calculates that over the years he may have
taught nearly 9,000 Denison students, since he always has a full
house. He says, “they are so eager to learn and offer fresh, new
ideas, and this class was a way I could recruit some of them into
the department as majors.”
Of particular delight to him are the students who seek information
beyond that which is usually prescribed and who engage
in levels of conversation that show a true fascination with the
subject. He feels that challenging discourse between students and
faculty is “the liberal arts ideal” and he takes particular pleasure
in having his students hold him to task.
Along with his introductory course, Steinberg teaches “Introduction
to Concepts in Political Philosophy,” “the Development
of Political thought – Ancient,” the Development of Political
thought – From Machiavelli to Mill” and “the Development of
Political thought – Marx to Present.”
A native of New york City, Steinberg earned a Bachelor of
Arts degree with honors from the University of California (1967)
where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and both master’s
(1969) and doctoral (1977) degrees from the University of Wisconsin
where he held a National Science Foundation Fellowship.
His research focuses on political philosophy, the philosophy of
Jules Steinberg
Professor Emeritus of Political Science
33
American constitutionalism, liberalism, conservatism and the
modern evolution of anti-liberalism.
Steinberg began his teaching career at Denison as an Assistant
Professor (1972) and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1978
and Professor in 1989. He served as chair of the Political Science
Department from 1980 to 1986. He is a member of the American
Political Science Association and the Conference for the Study of
Political thought. He has written three books, Locke, Rousseau,
and the Idea of Consent: An Inquiry into the Liberal-Democratic
Theory of Political Obligation (1978), The Obsession of Thomas
Hobbes: The English Civil War in Hobbes’s Political Philosophy
(1988) and Hannah Arendt and the Holocaust: The Suppression of
Truth (2000).
Steinberg anticipates the free time he soon will have to complete
several of the manuscripts on which he has been working.
the first is on Adam Smith and capitalism and the right and wrong
ways to understand a Smithian notion of capitalism. Another is
on the history of liberalism, conservatism and anti-liberalism and
still another is on Plato’s political thought. Although he will miss
the interaction with his students, he knows his friendships with
Denison alumni will continue in the years to come.
He and his wife rochelle plan to remain in Granville as she
continues her work as Executive Director of the Community
Mental Health and recovery Board of Licking and Knox Counties,
but they are sure to make time to visit their children Mara
and Gregory and their three granddaughters in New york City.
