A
record 15,000 people voted
this year for their favourite
restaurants, cafés and pubs,
in the fourth annual Eat Sheffield
Restaurant Awards, organised by
Sheffield Business School at Sheffield
Hallam.
The public voted for more than
300 restaurants, pubs and cafés in
the Sheffield region using the Eat
Sheffield website, social media polls
and voting cards in catering outlets.
The winners were announced at a
glittering awards ceremony at the St
Paul’s Mercure hotel, attended by the
cream of the city’s catering industry.
The Devonshire Arms, a modern
pub located in Middle Handley, took
the highly-prized ‘Eat Sheffield 2011
Restaurant of the Year’ title. Jill Swift,
owner of the Devonshire Arms, said:
“It’s been very hard work for us but
I’m absolutely elated to win - we’re all
very excited.
“Eat Sheffield is down to the public
vote and I’m a Sheffield girl, born in
Stannington. It’s so great to think that
this was voted for by people that I’ve
lived with all my life. I’m very proud, I
can’t believe it.
“We’ll carry on doing what we’ve
been doing because it works. We
produce good food, good quality, local
ingredients - there’s no different plan,
but we will aim to get better
and better.”
so thank you to everyone who voted
or took part.”
According to Niki, discussions around
the 2012 awards are already
taking place.
“The Eat Sheffield Food awards are
definitely going to happen in 2012,”
she said, “with a few exciting changes
planned. We’d love to look at bringing
the award ceremony to Sheffield
Hallam to showcase the hospitality
expertise we have here.
“As the Eat Sheffield project evolves
we will continue to develop the award
food sectors that we champion and
support enabling us to embrace more
food businesses within the region.
“Furthermore with the Sheffield
Brazil judo squad
pins down training base
Sheffield Hallam will be home for the Brazil
judo squad in the run-up to the Olympics, and
they came along to get familiar with the city
before a World Cup event in Liverpool back
in September.
By Joe Field
Shef field Hallam’s Collegiate Campus had
a distinctly Latin flavour in September,
as Sheffield City Council, the University’s
sport department and Sport Hallam teamed up
to host the Brazilian judo squad for their first
pre-Olympic Games training camp in the city.
The Brazilian team, who currently have several
members ranked in the world top ten, have
selected Sheffield as their UK training base
ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games. They
will return to the University in July for a twoweek
training camp.
The squad spent the week training at Collegiate
Campus, where they benefited from the
University’s iBoxer video capture system, which
allows coaches and athletes to analyse and
improve performance, define fight strategy and
gain a better understanding of their
opponents’ tactics.
The squad also worked with Sport Hallam
and British Judo on open sessions for British
athletes and Sheffield Hallam students. They
then headed to the GB World Cup in Liverpool,
where Daniel Hernandes won a gold medal and
David Moura won a bronze in the
heavyweight category.
Guy Masterman, head of sport at Sheffield
Hallam, said: “It is a tremendous honour to
have the Brazil judo team with us for their
preparations through to the 2012 Olympics.
“It is a testament to the facilities and sport
support systems we now have in place at
the University and our sport campus at EIS
Sheffield. It is especially pertinent for us as we
forge links with Brazil in its progress towards
hosting its own Olympics in 2016 and the FIFA
World Cup in 2014.
“Brazil is an exciting and welcome addition
to those nations hosting major international
sports events and I am sure they will gain from
their experience in Sheffield, London and
the UK.”
Ney Wilson, performance director of the
Brazilian judo squad, was grateful for the warm
welcome and felt it was a good sign for their
Olympic training at Sheffield Hallam next
year. He said: “Our visit to Sheffield was very
important for more detailed preparations for
London next year.
“We felt very welcome from all areas - the
Council, University and the hotel were all very
helpful, helping us find solutions to potential
future problems.
“This visit has been very positive, and I’d like
to say thank you for the way we have been
treated, in a very caring way, searching for
solutions to our needs together.”
The team was brought to Sheffield by a
partnership of organisations in the city, led by
Sheffield City Council. The relationship with
the team began through superstar footballer
Pelé, who visited the city in 2007 and was given
a letter to take back to the Brazilian Olympic
Committee.
Councillor Helen Mirfin-Boukouris, Sheffield
City Council’s Cabinet Member for Business,
Jobs and Growth, said: “Hosting training camps
like this is great for Sheffield, and I am delighted
to welcome the Brazilian judo team to the city. I
would like to say a huge thank you to everyone
involved in making this happen, and also to the
team themselves for choosing Sheffield.
