Baptism
Baptisms are celebrated every Sunday of the month at 12:30PM.
Parents are expected to participate in a Baptismal Preparation
Program. Please call the rectory to arrange for
the Baptismal Preparation Program and a date for Baptism.
Weekly Anointing and Prayer
After the 9:OOAM Mass each Sunday, we will celebrate
the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, for anyone
who has the need to receive this sacrament. This is meant
to include such concerns as upcoming diagnostic tests,
limitations of aging, anxiety, depression, undue stress,
addiction, etc. for all ages.
Please gather in the pews at the front of church
and the priest will be with you approximately
10 minutes after Mass is over.

Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2012
From Bethlehem to Jordan…
The feast of the baptism of the Lord is the last day of the
Christmas Season. At daily prayer this day, the Orthodox
churches pray:
Let us assemble in spirit, O faithful, at the streams of the Jordan
that we might behold a great and mighty wonder.
We shall see the Creator of all made manifest as he comes to be
baptized.
Let us pass, O Faithful, from Bethlehem to Jordan.
For behold, the light which came into the darkness there begins
to overcome the night.
Find out the date of your baptism TODAY. It is as important as
or even more important than your birthday into life. Ask a
relative, or write to the parish where you were baptized. Write
the date on a new calendar. Celebrate the anniversary this year
by participating in the Eucharist. Spend some time reflecting on
your Christian mission - your part in spreading God’s love.
When Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water and heard a
heavenly voice say, “You are my beloved; with you I am well
pleased.” Listen for this voice today whenever you “come out
of the water” - the shower, the snow or rain, the swimming pool,
the sudsy kitchen sink, or washing your hands. Glory in heaven
and peace on earth, now and forever! Alleluia! Amen!
Baptismal Reflections…
Take a good look at our baptismal font. It dates back to the
beginning of this church building in 1953. In 2003 it was
moved from its original location in the front of church, where
the chapel of the Archdiocesan patrons now is located, to a very
prominent place at the entrance of the church. It is now
equipped to be the place of baptism for both infants and adults at
Easter time and the great Easter Vigil. Look at the symbols:
the flowing or living water meaning life, energy, something
living; the round colorful symbol at the bottom of the baptismal
pool, the Celtic symbol of eternal life; the three small bronze
Jerusalem Crosses at the top of the baptismal font symbolizing
the birthplace of Christianity, Jerusalem, and the four small subcrosses
symbolizing the four gospels and four corners of the
world where the gospel needs to be preached. And finally, the
saying of King St. Louis IX, the King of France, and the patron
of the City and the County and the Archdiocese of St. Louis: “I
think more of the place where I was baptized than the Cathedral
of Rheims where I was crowned the king (of France). For the
dignity of a child of God which was bestowed upon me at
baptism is greater than the ruler of the kingdom. The latter I
shall lose at death and the former will be my passport to
everlasting glory.”
If you were lucky enough to have been baptized here go and
pray at the font today. If not, go to the place of your own
baptism if you can. If you cannot do that then spend some time
in prayer at our font here at St. Peter. Say a prayer for your
parents and Godparents and thank them for giving you the
greatest gift in the world, the gift of faith in the Roman Catholic
Church. And then pray in humility that you can live up to the
promises made for you and renewed by you to live the life of
Christ for others.

And finally, research your name and find out why you were given
that particular name. For whom were you named? What does
your name mean? Your name is one of your most important
possessions so carry it with dignity. The worst thing we can do is
ruin someone’s good name. People just love it when we can call
them by name. In the Jewish tradition upon which our faith is
built, if you called someone by their first name it meant that they
allowed you into their mind and heart. Possession of one’s name
meant you could possess their heart…it is so holy to call one by
name. That’s why when you were young you could never call an
adult by their first name. You were not old enough to get into
their mind and heart. In the Jewish tradition a good Jew can
never call God by God’s proper name, which is Yahweh, for who
can ever get into the mind and heart of God. So the Orthodox
Jew calls God by another name, Adonai. In the scriptures it is
stated that God calls each of us by name. I find that very
reassuring.
And what a Christmas it was!
We are now completing the liturgical Christmas Season with
today’s feast. It is a perfect time to thank a whole lot of folks
who made our Christmas Celebration such a memorable moment
for us at St. Peter.
First of all much gratitude to Carol Bauer, Mike Bauer, Kathleen
Pottinger, the choir, cantors and musicians for such dedication
and care in leading us in song and praise throughout the Advent
and Christmas seasons. Our music is second to none. We have
all the above to thank for it. Week in and week out our music
ministry folks rehearse, lead us in prayer and in the process create
a beautiful liturgical experience for us to find the presence of
God. I know of people who come to our church just because our
music is so well done and with such care for detail.
Secondly, thank you to Francie Gosser, the entire Hesse Clan,
Rose Ross, and many others who turned our church into a
fantastic worship space for Christmas. I have been around St.
Peter for a whole lot of years and never have I seen the church
look more beautiful for Christmas. During the Christmas Season
I would often come over to church especially at night, turn on the
Christmas lights and just enjoy the moment in prayer. It was so
wonderful. For all who in any way helped put that all together
thanks!
Thirdly, all of our liturgical ministers especially our Deacons,
John Komotos and Dick Renard, for their untiring service to the
parish during Christmas. In addition all the lectors, Eucharistic
Ministers, and servers who made Father Mike, Msgr. Greg and I
look good.
And, of course, our maintenance staff, especially, Jim Wherry and
Debbie Smith who worked very diligently to clean, buff, dust,
change light bulbs, put up and take down chairs to prepare the
church for Christmas and the crowds.
And finally, to all of you who came to Mass throughout, offered
your praise, participation and made such generous donations to
the parish. When you fill up our church it is then the most
beautiful.
May this new year of 2013 be for all of us a time filled with the
presence of God!

ST. PETER PARISH WELCOMES
GRADE 2 PARISH FAMILIES TO 9:00AM MASS TODAY!
Today we welcome Second Grade St. Peter families from our
school and PSR at the 9:00AM Mass. These students will
celebrate their First Reconciliation on Saturday January 26 th and
they look forward to their First Communion on Saturday April
27 th . Please greet our families from St. Peter School and Parish
School of Religion. In the coming months we will welcome:
Grade 8 on February 3 rd at 11:00 AM Mass, Grade 7 on Saturday
March 2 nd at the 5:00 PM Mass, and Grade 4 on Sunday April 21
at the 11:00 AM Mass. Our 8 th graders begin their preparation for
the Sacrament of Confirmation in January. Archbishop Carlson
will confer the sacrament on May 1, 2013. Please keep all of

STS. TERESA & BRIDGET FOOD PANTRY
St. Peter Parish completed 2012 supporting Sts. Teresa & Bridget
food pantry with a BANG. We sent over 14,780 items of food
that fed many homeless and hungry families of our city. The
pantry would not have been able to do this great work without the
good people of our parish. Thank you.
Our commitment continues into 2013. Our next opportunity to
feed the hungry is January 21, 2013. Your donation can be
placed in the pantry box anytime, come on by.

The Archbishop’s Committee on Eucharistic Adoration will hold
a Lay Eucharistic Conference on Saturday, February 16, at The
Cardinal Rigali Center with Bishop Robert Hermann
speaking on “Eucharistic Adoration in the Year of Faith”.
The conference begins at 8:30 A.M. with Holy Mass and
concludes with a Holy Hour and Benediction at 12:00 noon.
Continental breakfast is included in the $20.00 registration fee.

Kindergarten and Pre-K registration for 2013-2014
The school office will mail out Kindergarten and Preschool
registration information the first week of February. We do
anticipate full classes this fall, so please make sure you receive
our information. If you have not received information in the last
few months, you probably aren’t on our mailing list. Please call

St. Peter Baseball, Softball and Track Registration for all grades
will open online on January 1st and will close on February 15th.

CYC JR. GOLF PROGRAM REGISTRATION
Registration for the inaugural Junior Golf Program
at St. Peter will be open from January 1st until

HAITIAN BIRTHING KITS SERVICE PROJECT
St. Peter Young Families Group is coordinating the birthing kits
project for expectant women in Haiti. These kits save many lives
by ensuring clean supplies for mothers and babies during the
delivery. We need your help in collecting the supplies needed for
the kits and/or assembling the kits. A helping hands tree will be
set up in the gathering area in church. Please take a hand and
return supplies under the tree during the collection dates.
Monetary donations are also welcome to help cover costs of
shipment. Please send through rectory office.
Collections will begin on January 27th thru February 3rd.

ST. PETER AND PAUL SOUP KITCHEN
We served 142 guests at St. Peter and Paul on Thursday, January
3. The meal took 18 cooks to prepare, 12 to provide side items
and 15 to serve. All left satisfied and well cared for. Special
thanks to Kim Cordia and Mary Carol Schilli who were our sub
cooks this month. Thanks also to the four 8 th grade Confirmation
candidates and their chaperones Bill Doyle and Lisa Lard who
helped serve the hungry guests. Our ministry served a total of
1271 meals to the hungry in Soulard in 2012.
Please save any new or gently used blankets for the homeless and
drop them off at 311 Weston Oaks Court around the first of the
month. We will take them with us when we go to serve on the
third.

For the next 2 weeks, you can provide warmth and comfort to those
in need by donating new hats, gloves and scarves for men, women
and children. Donations will be delivered to the St. Peter and Paul
Shelter.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL YOUTH CONFERENCES
TWENTY AND THIRTY SOMETHINGS...Volunteer in the
New Year. The Society of St. Vincent De Paul offers a variety of
opportunities for young adults including:
Home visitations of the needy through 140 area chapters to
provide food, rent, clothing, utility and job referral
assistance.
Four young adults chapters in Soulard, South Grand,
Midtown and Manchester.
A young adult food pantry program.
Four area thrift stores in South City, Ballwin, St. Charles and
Dellwood.
Legislative liaison and pen pal programs for inmates.

ROOM AT THE INN
St. Peter hosted 8 homeless guests on December 21, 2012.
Thanks to the following parish volunteers who so generously
donated their time and talent: women' ACTS team for February
retreat, the Morgan family, the Muldoon family, Jack Collins,
Georgia Colombo, Brian Fitzgerald and Judy Jackson. A special
shout-out to some St. Peter 6th graders for helping with the
mattresses: Maddy Allgeyer, Timmy Heinlein, Harry Loida, Sam
Guillmette, Abigail James and Sophia Council.
The Room at the Inn program is a great opportunity to practice
stewardship by sharing some our time and blessings with those
who are not as fortunate. Volunteers are always needed. If
you've signed up in the past but have not been contacted, or if you
would like to know more about the program call Joan at
821-2935.
Our next opportunity to volunteer is January 18, 2013 and
every 3rd Friday thereafter.
MARRIAGE RENEWAL 2013 — A CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE

The Traveling Chalice Program is designed
to pray for religious vocations. Parishioners are
asked to take the chalice home and display it in a
place of honor, where all throughout the week they
can notice it. Parishioners will pray around the
chalice every night for vocations to the priesthood
and religious life. Prayers for vocations will accompany the
chalice. You can choose which Mass your family would like to
receive the chalice. We have openings for the Traveling Chalice
in January. If you are interested in signing up for a week please

ready to assist with transportation, yard work, light housekeeping,

MOBILE OUTREACH
Thank you to all who donate to this ministry!! Our last donation
included 509 items for St. Patrick Center’s Mobile Outreach
program. The team takes these items to our city’s streets as they
reach out to the homeless in hopes of connecting them to other
services provided by St. Patrick Center. Thank you so much for
your generosity!!! Donations are accepted every day at

FROM THE ST. PETER BEYOND HOUSING MINISTRY!
We just completed a busy December and we'd like to say thanks.
On December 8, we held our 6th annual "Breakfast with Santa"
for approximately 100 children and parents in the Beyond
Housing program. We'd like to thank all who helped, especially
our awesome "Faith in Action" partners - the 5th graders and their
parents who assisted. It was a fun morning of food, crafts,
storytelling and a visit with Santa.
On December 12 we delivered several carloads of gifts for
Beyond Housing families through our parish support for the
annual Adopt a Family program. We were humbled once again
by the generosity of our parish family. With your help, we
provided for the six families in severe need that were assigned to
us, plus we had many donations of toys and gift cards for other
families. A special shout-out to the teachers and staff of St. Peter
School who provided new winter coats, hats and gloves for all the
children in our assigned families.
We'll keep you informed about our outreach activities for Beyond
Housing in 2013 and we are grateful for your continued support.

The Giving Tree Ministry would like to thank everyone who
supported the 2012 Giving Tree. Once again the parishioners of
St. Peter showed their overwhelming generosity by donating
nearly 3000 gifts and $4000 in gift cards. Kirkcare, New
Covenant Ministries, YWCA Headstart and Fostering Faithful
Families were very grateful for all donations. Many thanks to the
many volunteers who helped by hanging ornaments, carrying and
sorting the gifts. A special thank you to the 5th & 6th graders at
St Peter School.

St. Peter Yoga Fusion Class
St. Peter Yoga is back with a different format. We are offering a
yoga fusion class which is mostly yoga with some added core
work. The class is taught by Catherine Enslin of St. Peter Parish.
Catherine is an AFAA certified group fitness instructor and an
ACE certified personal trainer.
Date: Tuesdays January 8, 15, 22, 29, - No Class January 1, 2013
Time: 5:30 to 6:30pm
Cost: $20.00 for 4 week session
Drop in classes are $8.00
Class minimum is at least 10 people registered
to have the class continue.

SILVER STREAKS EXERCISE PROGRAM AT ST. PETER…
Come join us on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:00 PM in
Ursuline Hall in the Msgr. Deutschmann Room.
This is a good hour-long workout that isn’t too strenuous. It will
get you moving and keep those joints mobile. Silver Streaks is a
chair-based class to benefit people with arthritis, stiffness or who
just want to keep moving. Maybe you are looking for something
to get you started, to go with your walking program or to add
some variety. The program is designed to improve overall
flexibility, balance and strength. Try it, you will like it. Cost is
only $5.00 per session, payable on the day you attend. The
instructor, Holly Ohmes, is certified by the Arthritis Foundation.
