PARALYMPIC TORCH The stamps in the second Paralympic issue for 2000 are inspired by the design of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic logo and torch . The stamps (two x 45c) are produced with tabs, so they can be personalised. Title tabs (shown above) carry the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games’ slogan, ‘Feel inspired’. The design The stamps are designed by FHA Image Design, Melbourne. The style should strike a familiar chord with stamp collectors. FHA Image Design, Melbourne, was also responsible for the Sydney Paralympic and Olympic Games logos, as well as the Paralympic Sports stamps, and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Emblem stamps and the Olympic Sports stamps. Associated products for this issue include a first day cover, a set of two maximum cards and a stamp pack. Individual sheets, with title tabs (either design) are available with normal (13 mm selvedge). A set of sheets, one each design, is available with a decorative selvedge. A limited number of Special Event Souvenir sheets were produced for fund raising dinners held to support the Paralympians. These are available via mail order with a a standard image in the tabs. Logo The Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games logo embodies the vitality of Sydney, the spirit of Australia and the ability and achievement of the Paralympic athlete. It portrays the Paralympic torch and echoes the sails of Sydney’s greatest landmark, the Opera House. 10 18 october 2000 Relay This stamp shows a stylised image of a vision impaired athlete carrying the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Torch. The design of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic torch, evokes the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games logo. The Sydney 200 Paralympic Torch Relay Sydney will be the fourth city to host a Paralympic Torch Relay. The first was held in Seoul in 1988. The torch will be lit on 5 October 2000 during a traditional fire lighting ceremony on the forecourt of Parliament House, Canberra, by members of the Ngunnawal community. By the end of its journey the torch will have passed through the hands of 920 torchbearers. The route for the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Torch Relay will cover 11,500 kilometres by air from Canberra to Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Brisbane before arriving in New South Wales, where it will begin its seven day, 750 kilometre journey by road. The torch will tour regional centres in New South Wales, passing through more than 200 cities, towns and the greater Sydney region before arriving at the Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games on 18 October.
