DON McCAULLEY<br />

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR<br />

Don McCaulley, former defensive coordinator<br />

for Chico State University in California<br />

for six years, runs the Ute defense.<br />

During that time, Chico State recorded<br />

a 48-18 record, won three league championships,<br />

were nationally ranked three time and<br />

had one appearance in the college division<br />

Camelia Bowl. Prior to his appointment at<br />

the California school, Chico State won only<br />

one league game in five years.<br />

A native <strong>of</strong> Calhoun County, Iowa<br />

the 40-year-old coach received his B.A.<br />

from Buena Vista <strong>College</strong> at Storm Lake,<br />

Iowa in 1960 and his M.A. from Indiana<br />

Universtiy, where he served as a graduate<br />

assistant with the Hoosier <strong>football</strong> program.<br />

His other coaching experience includes a two<br />

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR<br />

Jesse Cone is in his second year as Ute<br />

<strong>of</strong>fensive coordinator. Prior to joining the<br />

Utah staff Cone served in the same capacity<br />

at Utah State and Wake Forest.<br />

Cone, a native <strong>of</strong> Antioch, California, was<br />

a standout grid performer at Stanford Univversity<br />

in the early fifties. In 1950 and<br />

1951 he was named to the All-Coast team<br />

as a guard. In his final year <strong>of</strong> competition<br />

he was Honorable Mention All-American and<br />

captained the 1951 Stanford Rose Bowl<br />

Team. He received his B.A. from Stanford<br />

in 1951 and a M.A. from the same school in<br />

1952.<br />

The 46-year-old Cone began his coaching<br />

career in the high school and junior college<br />

systems in California. He spent one year as<br />

head coach at Capuchino High School, eight<br />

years at Ganesha High School, one year as<br />

line coach at Mt. San Antonio <strong>College</strong>, four<br />

years as line coach at Pomona <strong>College</strong> and<br />

year stint as head freshman coach at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Richmond in Virginia, and as<br />

head <strong>football</strong> and track coach at Exira High<br />

School in Iowa.<br />

A former linebacker and defensive back<br />

for Buena Vista <strong>College</strong>, McCauljey and his<br />

wife Joyce have two children, Brad (11) and<br />

Brian (4).<br />

three years as head coach at Claremont Men's<br />

<strong>College</strong>. In 1969 he joined the staff at Utah<br />

State, then spent the 1973 season at Wake<br />

Forest.<br />

While Cone was on the Utah State staff<br />

the Aggies experienced two <strong>of</strong> their better<br />

seasons in reoent history, posting an 8-3<br />

season in 1971 and a 9-2 mark in 1972.<br />

Jesse and his wife Natalie have three<br />

children, Jess (22), Buddy (21) and Nancy<br />

(19).
