GARDNER<br />
President<br />
Dr. David P. Gardner — one <strong>of</strong> the most<br />
articulate authorities on higher education in<br />
America — became the 10th president <strong>of</strong> the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Utah, August 1, 1973.<br />
The 41-year-old educator developed his<br />
administrative expertise j in the University^<strong>of</strong><br />
California system, moving rapidly from alumni<br />
field, and scholarship director on the<br />
Berkeley campus in 1960 to vice president<br />
<strong>of</strong> extended academic and public service<br />
programs'for all nine UC campuses in 1971.<br />
Born March 24, 1933, in Berkeley, California,<br />
Dr. Gardner attended public schools<br />
in his hometo n, and was graduated from<br />
Brigham Young Universitywith a bachelors<br />
in 1955. He returned to California to earn<br />
his M.A. degree in political science and ph.D.<br />
degree in higher education from UC Berkeley<br />
in 1959. and 1966, respectively.<br />
Dr. Gardner became assistant chancellor<br />
at the University <strong>of</strong> California at Santa<br />
Barbara in 1967, at the same time launching<br />
his scholarly career with a faculty appointment<br />
in education and the publication <strong>of</strong> his<br />
widely acclaimed book, The California Oath<br />
Controversy.<br />
As a top UC administrator he was also<br />
responsible for overseeing University <strong>of</strong><br />
California Extension programs, which in<br />
1971-72 involved 330,000 persons.<br />
In becoming the 10th president <strong>of</strong> the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Utah, Dr. Gardner pledged<br />
himself to "excellence, distinction and vigor<br />
in the academic program."<br />
Dr. Gardner is married to the former<br />
Elizabeth Jane Fuhriman <strong>of</strong> Piedmont, California.<br />
They have four daughters.<br />

The name "Bud" Jack and the term<br />
"Utah Athletics" are synonymous. Bud is<br />
now in his sixteenth year at the helm <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Utah athletic program, during which time he<br />
has distinguished himself as one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
most capable administrators in the business.<br />
During his tenure, the Utah athletic<br />
program has grown in stature and has been<br />
recognized on a national level as one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
finest in the country. Under Bud's leadership,<br />
the athletic facilities at Utah have<br />
improved to such a degree that now they are<br />
listed among the finest in the country.<br />
Bud is a past president <strong>of</strong> the National<br />
Association <strong>of</strong> Collegiate Directors <strong>of</strong> Athletics<br />
(NACDA). He is also a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Honors Court for the <strong>Football</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong><br />
Fame. He has served two four-year terms on<br />
the U.S. Olympic Committee and served as<br />
the chairman <strong>of</strong> transportation for the Pan<br />
Am games, the 1972 Winter Olympics in<br />
Japan and the 1972 Summer <strong>Games</strong> in<br />
Murrich, Germany. He will retain that same<br />
responsibility during his current term and is.<br />
responsible for arranging transportation for<br />
United States teams to-the <strong>1975</strong> Pan Am"<br />
<strong>Games</strong> in Mexico'City, -the'; 1976 Winter<br />
Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, and the.<br />
1976 Summer <strong>Games</strong> in Montreal.<br />
A 1939 Utah graduate. Bud b'ecame<br />
Athletic Director in 1958 following previbus<br />
responsibilities as Business Manager and<br />
Assistant Athletic Director.<br />
An active member <strong>of</strong> the community,<br />
Bud is a past president <strong>of</strong> the Salt Lake<br />
Rotary Club, and is a past member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Board <strong>of</strong> Directors for St. Marks and Rowland<br />
Hall Schools.<br />
Bud and Ma Jack are parents <strong>of</strong> two<br />
daughters, and have a new granddaughter.
