1975 OUTLOOK
"We have a year under our belts — the
staff and the players—and we all know what
stillneedsto be done," Read surveys. "We'll
have a lot more leadership even though we'll
still be a junior-dominated team."
"We see this team as a bunch of guys
who will be better," he summarizes. "We
hope that the year of experience with the
Veer and a building of the 'we' attitude will
make us that much stronger."
Getting down to specifics, Oregon should
again be strong defensively. Sometimes or
regular starters will be available at all II
positions, including several stellar performers:
Tackle Greg Gibson (6-3, 234), Strong-side
linebacker Darrell Mehl (6-0, 224), Middle
linebacker Tom Yaru (6-2, 235) and corner
back Mario Clark (6-2, 184) a senior who
is a bonafide All-American candidate.
The wide receiver corps counts Wayne
Johnson (5-11, 173) and Greg Bauer (5-9,
168), while there figures to be a concerted,
eight-man scramble for the two running
back slots. Teddy Farmer (6-0, 175) and
George Bennett (6-1, 218) currently lead the
parade, but several others should put in a
bid before the season opens.
At quarterback, it will be more of the
same. Phil Brus, a junior who sat out last
season after transfering from California,
brings a solid set of frosh credentials. He
had 64 completions for 739 yards and six
touchdowns while completing 68.1 per cent
of his tosses and later threw for 290 yards and
two scores in the Bears' 1972 spring game.
