All-American Candidate John Huddleston Linebacker, Carmichael, California SR.2VL Ht. 6-3, Wt. 230, Born 4-10-54 Jesuit High School AT UTAH-They call John Huddleston "The Monk" Not because of his strong religious convictions, but because he went to an all boys high school (Jesuit) in Sacramento, California, and even though Huddleston may not preach to you he has made many running backs say their prayers when they saw big John moving in for the tackle. With 157 tackles last year Huddleston has sent enough prayers skyward to move the Rocky Mountains, but his main concern is improving Utah's grid fortunes. At 6-3, 230 pounds Huddleston is the perfect model for a linebacker. He is devastating in stopping the run and good enough to be effective in covering the pass. Huddleston is the kind of player who scares people. He is so fearless and plays with such outright abandon that rarely can one blocker stop him. Huddleston is a leader off the field as well as on. Last year the Utes selected captains for every game by having the players vote on who they wanted and Huddleston was selected as a captain for all eleven games. HIGH SCHOOL: At Jesuit High School, Huddleston earned six letters in football, basketball and baseball. He was on championship teams in football and basketball and was captain of the football team. PERSONAL: John is majoring in history and hopes to become a coach after giving pro football a try. His father, Clarence, played both football and basketball for U.S.C. LOVAT ON HUDDLESTON: "John will be an assist to our team this season both as a player and a leader. He has started for us for two years and we are looking for John to be the best linebacker ever to play at Utah. He is a definite post-season honors candidate." 10

Post-Season Possibility RONCHERKAS Defensive Tackle, Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Canada, Senior 1VL Ht: 6-4 Wt: 235 Born: 12-30-53 Kamsack High School AT UTAH: As a junior college transfer last season, Ron stepped right into the starting lineup and was a mainstay of the Ute defense. He proved to be a very able pass rusher and was fourth on the team in tackles with 57. He was named as a member of the All-WAC second team last season and with a year's experience under his belt should be a candidate for first-team honors this season. Cherkas is very strong and moves well for a defensive lineman. He is also one of those players who gives 100 percent all the time and is highly respected b'y his teammates. JUNIOR COLLEGE: Ron attended Gavilan Junior College in Gilroy, California where he played football, basketball, baseball and track. He was named to the All-Conference and All-State teams in footballl. HIGH SCHOOL: At Kamsack High School Ron played football, basketball, baseball, and track earning All-league honors in football and basketball. He was noted to be a hard throwing pitcher in baseball and both his football and basketball teams won league championships. PERSONAL. Ron is a physical education major and hopes to be a coach someday after giving pro football a try. He is a good student and was a member of the student council in high school. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cherkas, own a large farm in Kamsack. LOVAT ON CHERKAS: "As an inexperienced junior Ron established himself as a stalwart in our defense. Last year's experience, coupled with an intense desire, will make Ron valuable to us." Post-Season Possibility MIKE SPENCER Defensive Cornerback, Compton, California, Junior, 1VL Ht: 5-11% Wt: 178 Born: 1-8-54 Compton High School AT UTAH: Mike is one of the bright spots in the Ute defensive secondary. After sitting out two years ago as a redshirt Mike stepped right into the starting lineup last season and showed he had the talent to become one of the best defensive backs ever to don a Utah uniform. He is an excellent athlete and has that extra sense of where the ball is going. Mike has good speed and quickness as he showed last year in making 48 tackles. If Mike lives up to his promise and ability he should be a definite contender for post-season honors this year HIGH SCHOOL: At Compton High School, Mike earned three letters in football and was the captain of the team. His team won the Coast League Championship in 1969 and 1970 and he once caught three touchdown passes in a game. PERSONAL. Mike is the younger brother of Ike, Ute running back who finished his career last year as the all-time Ute rushing leader. Mike is a Community Recreation Management Major and hopes to be a country club owner someday. Mike is married and is the son of Mrs. Anna Spencer. LOVAT ON SPENCER: "Mike has the ability, very similar, to that of Norm Thompson (one of the Utes all-time great defensive backs) and if he improves his consistency he wilt be one of the finest defensive backs ever to play at Utah." 11
