SCHOOL CHOICE Students may choose schools in their school zone (East, North, West) or across zones if the school is located with 1.5 miles from their home. Citywide schools are also open to all students, regardless of where they reside in Boston. Types of Schools and Programs Middle Schools Middle Schools are typically stand alone schools that offer educational opportunities for students in grades six, seven and eight. They are often larger than elementary schools and provide opportunities for students graduating from an elementary school to attend a bigger school with more and new students. K-12 and 6-12 Schools A few schools have expanded or merged to create schools with grades six through twelve. A benefit to these schools includes a continuous track through high school. They are as follows: Lyon K-8 School & Lyon High School (North) Quincy Elementary and Quincy Upper Schools (North) TechBoston Academy (East) Pilot and In-District Charter Schools Pilot schools and BPS in-district charter schools are included in the school district but have control over their own budget, staffing, curriculum, etc. This allows these schools increased flexibility in school staffing and organization. Some of these schools require a separate application process. There are 7 pilot or in-district charter schools at the middle or K-8 level: BTU K-8 School Frederick Middle School Harbor School Hernández K-8 School Lyndon K-8 School Lyon K-10 School (grades 9-10) Mission Hill K-8 School Orchard Gardens K-8 School Quincy Upper School TechBoston Academy UP Academy Young Achievers Science & Math K-8 School Exam Schools There are three citywide exam schools in the Boston Public Schools. All three schools accept new students for grades seven and nine. The O’Bryant School also accepts a few new students for grade 10. Students are admitted to the exam schools based on a combined score that includes results of an entrance test, called the Independent Schools Entrance Exam (ISEE), and their grade point average (GPA). The ISEE and the GPA are each worth 50% of the score. The ISEE is administered every year in early November.
