GLOSSARY OF TERMS 

Attendance Rate: Attendance rate indicates the average percentage of days in attendance for 

students enrolled in a Boston public school. 

Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS): Shows percent of students at each 

performance level for the current year. Also included is the school’s total “proficiency rate” for Math 

and ELA, that is, the percentage of students who achieved either proficient or advanced 

performance levels. 

School Size by Grade: Indicates the total number of students in each grade and the school. 

School Population by Race/Ethnicity: Indicates the percent of enrollment by race/ethnicity, rounded 

to the nearest tenth. Definitions (as of October 1, 2012). 

African American or Black: A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. 

Asian: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian 

subcontinent. 

Hispanic or Latino: A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other 

Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. 

Multi-race, Non-Hispanic: A person selecting more than one racial category and non-Hispanic. 

Native American: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America 

(including Central America), and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment. 

Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of 

Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands. 

White: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. 

Special Education: Indicates the percent of enrollment that have an Individualized Education 

Program (IEP). 

Student/Teacher Ratio: The student enrollment as of October 1 to the total number of teachers.

SCHOOL CHOICE 

Students may choose schools in their school zone (East, North, West) or across zones if the school is 

located with 1.5 miles from their home. Citywide schools are also open to all students, regardless of 

where they reside in Boston.

Middle Schools are typically stand alone schools that offer educational opportunities for students in grades six, 

seven and eight. They are often larger than elementary schools and provide opportunities for students 

graduating from an elementary school to attend a bigger school with more and new students.

A few schools have expanded or merged to create schools with grades six through twelve. A benefit to these

Exam Schools 

There are three citywide exam schools in the Boston Public Schools. All three schools accept new students for 

grades seven and nine. The O’Bryant School also accepts a few new students for grade 10. Students are 

admitted to the exam schools based on a combined score that includes results of an entrance test, called the 

Independent Schools Entrance Exam (ISEE), and their grade point average (GPA). The ISEE and the GPA are 

each worth 50% of the score. The ISEE is administered every year in early November.

The AVID Program 

AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination, and is offered in certain schools from grades 4 

through 12. In grades 6-12, an AVID elective class is designed to meet the educational and social needs of 

students “in the middle” – average students who have the potential to succeed in college through hard work 

and individual determination. Some special components of AVID include: 

� A strong academic focus and rigorous course of study. 

� A solid academic and social support network that expects and rewards hard work, perseverance, and 

academic achievement.

Advanced Work Class (AWC) 

Advanced Work Class is a full-time program for students in grades four, five and six that provides an 

accelerated academic curriculum for highly motivated and academically capable students. Coursework is 

challenging and students are expected to complete more school work and more home study. New sixth 

grade students are invited to AWC based on results of a standardized test taken in the fall of fifth grade. This 

test is the Terra Nova 3, Basic Survey Test or, for native Spanish speakers, the SUPERA test.

As the nation’s oldest school, Boston Latin has prepared the youth of Boston for college success and 

competitiveness in the world since 1635. Our graduates include five signers of the Declaration of 

Independence, Leonard Bernstein and Ralph Waldo Emerson. More recently, the founders of Stop & Shop, the 

CEO of Shaw’s Supermarket, the owner of Roche Brothers, the owner of Viacom and the founder of Qualcomm 

also graduated from the Latin School. Moreover, hundreds of our graduates have gone on to become 

business leaders, research scientists, lawyers, doctors, educators, and public officials. 


We have a host of fellowships and internships including the John William Ward Public Service Fellowship for 

interests in Government, the Julius Babbitt Fellowship for interests in non-profit work and the Seevak Fellowship 

for interests in peace and social justice. 

Extra-Curricular and sports activities: 

We have a host of clubs and activities for all interests from a Fashion and Talent Club, Step Squad and Spoken 

Word Club to the American Red Cross, school newspaper and literary magazine. Sports include football, 

baseball, soccer, volleyball, softball, hockey, indoor and outdoor track, golf, crew, swimming, and basketball, 

wrestling, cheerleading, tennis, sailing, and cross-country. While all sports are offered at the Varsity level, some 

sports are offered at the freshman and Junior Varsity level as well. All sports are open regardless of gender, but 

some sports do not have a gender specific team. 


President Bush visited Boston Latin in 2002 to promote his NCLB legislation. BLS finished 1 st in both the English and 

Math MCAS results in 2011. The U.S. Secretary of Education has designated Boston Latin School as a National 

Blue Ribbon School for 2012. This award acknowledges our efforts to ensure that every child attains high levels 

of academic performance. We have demonstrated that, working together, parents, teachers, staff, 

administrators, and community leaders can motivate all students to reach their full potential.

The Boston Teachers Union School seeks to educate students to high standards and help them reach their educational potential 

and become capable, caring, engaged citizens. We aim to provide all students with a rigorous and wide-ranging liberal arts 

education in an inclusive, democratic, nurturing and safe environment that welcomes families and capitalizes on the expertise of 

excellent teachers. 

The BTU School is a teacher-run school with two teacher-leaders and faculty working together to make important decisions 

regarding the school. We believe that unleashing the potential of teachers is the best way to provide a wide-ranging, high-quality 

education to all of our scholars. Collaboratively, the faculty develops an innovative and rigorous curriculum for our scholars as well 

as a professional growth program for teachers and associate teachers that include a peer observation component. 

The BTU School emphasizes involving the whole family, providing educational opportunities and other social and related services 

for students and their family members. The school has a longer school day, and involves outside agencies with a long-term goal of 

providing more services, including health and social services. 

In addition to a rigorous academic program, the Union School currently offers Music, Art and Spanish as a World Language to 

scholars. Ongoing student assessment, intervention and academic support ensure achievement for each and every scholar. 

Simmons College Partnership 

The professional development partnership with Simmons provides opportunities for teachers from both the school and the college 

to engage in self-reflective practice. Social work, graduate health studies and library science students are involved with the BTU 

students and the school community. The partnership serves as an opportunity to provide a school environment that enhances 

student learning, teacher learning, research and practice.

Our collective focus on whole school-whole child aims to support our students’ academic and social/emotional needs. We 

have an extensive Student Support Team that includes an outstanding guidance counselor with personal connections to 

the greater Jamaica Plain community, the Rally Program, and the Curley Consortium. We also have access to a wide range 

of school-based and community-based professional counseling services. 

Our school newspaper, The Curley Chronicle, is one component of our amazing arts and enrichment department. Hyde 

Square Task Force’s Learn Through Dance professional dancers enhance our in-school dance program. Our music and 

instrumental program is strengthened by our VH-1 Save the Music grant and through our partnership with Community Music. 

Our theatre and visual arts program puts on a variety of exciting shows and performances throughout the year. 

In partnership with Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), we are happy to be a part 

of the Healthy Meals Initiative. The new program features a professional chef cooking at our school, and educates our 

cafeteria manager about healthier ways to prepare and present meals that are both nutritious and delicious. 


As a Step-Up school, we have the great fortune of having formalized partnerships with area universities to supplement our 

academic programming. Students from Northeastern University visit the school regularly to provide individual and wholeclass 

support. Our students also have access to the University of Massachusetts Summer Program, Northeastern University’s 

Summer Program, Alvin Ailey Camp, and our before-school academic program. 

Our students also have the opportunity to visit local universities to explore and participate in hands-on, experiential learning. 

One of these opportunities includes a visit to Harvard Medical School. 

To further support our students’ academic achievement, we have partnered with Outward Bound and Boston Harbor 

Islands/Thompson Island to provide our students with multi-day and overnight experiential learning experiences. 

For the past several years, we have taken a select group of students to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands during school vacation to

The intimate size and structure of the Eliot K-8 School creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We 

are one of the newest K-8 schools in Boston having just completed our conversion this year with the 

addition of two new K1 classrooms and an 8 th grade. Our school is located in the heart of the North End 

along the Freedom Trail. 

Our school offers an Italian Language program to students in Kinder 1 through Grade 8. We have an Art 

studio, a Music Studio and a state of the art computer classroom with SMART board technology. SMART 

Boards are housed in many of the classrooms connecting our students to the 21 st century while 

seamlessly integrating technology into their classroom instruction. We also offer enrichment courses to 

students in grades 4-8 in reading, writing and mathematics. 


The location of the school and our partnerships with the many community agencies provides our 

students hands on opportunities to live and breathe history. The Old North Church, Paul Revere’s House 

and the United States Coast Guard are all within walking distance and bring learning alive for our 

students. 

Our partnership with the New England Aquarium offers all our students the opportunity to visit the 

Aquarium every month and spend time investigating and observing different exhibits in the Aquarium 

linked to grade level science curriculum. Our partnership with the Italian Consulate has provided a full 

time Italian teacher. All our students in Kinder 1 through grade 8 receive Italian language instruction. 


We have a number of after school/extra curricular activities for students. We offer after school karate twice a 

week. Champions After School Program provides our after school program for grades K1-5 everyday from 3:30- 

6:00pm. There is a daily before school program for all students run by North End Music Perfuming Arts Center 

with instrumental music lesson, art classes and drama and dance.

The Frederick is broken down into four small academies, with each school housing students in grades 6 to 8. This 

makes it possible for all students and families to be known well. Parents take an active role in all aspects of the

The Harbor Pilot Middle School is a part of the Boston Public School district with 

approximately 300 students in grades six through nine. We have an innovative 21 st 

century approach to education. As a turnaround school, we have faculty 

members with extensive expertise and experience. The Harbor Pilot Middle School 

has a clear vision of success and high expectations for all staff and students. 

Our school’s rigorous course design is based on the most contemporary research 

and standards-based curriculum. We have the most up-to-date textbooks in all 

subject areas, and a state-of-the-art technology initiative with HP ThinkClient 

workstations in every classroom, a thirty seat computer and research laboratory, 

and a full multimedia library. 

The Harbor School’s educational philosophy is that students are taught to work 

collaboratively through inquiry-based learning. Through guided practice students 

learn to interact effectively and take responsibility for each other’s learning while 

engaged in higher order thinking skills. 

Being a full inclusion school, our systemic approach is the use an RTI (Response to 

Intervention) three tier model while differentiating instruction, and using adaptive 

technologies for all students according to their individual student data profiles. 

Our educators are trained to implement the AVID program, which provides 

foundational support to each student in organizational skills, daily homework 

expectations, Cornell Note taking, time management, Socratic Seminars, and 

goal setting on the path for college success. Motivation in the AVID program 

ensures that our students will succeed in a rigorous curriculum, increase their 

enrollment in four year colleges, and become well educated, responsible 

participants and leaders in our society. 

Parents are vital to the success of the school, and we ask that parents help 

reinforce the learning process. Parents should sign agenda books daily, review all 

progress reports, and contact their teachers for conferences. We require that 

Harbor students read 30-45 minutes each night. Families have a voice in school 

governance through the parent council and the Governing Board, and we 

strongly encourage their involvement in their child’s education. 

We offer a range of after-school programs tailored to meet individual student and 

family needs including: academic support, MCAS prep, social/emotional groups, 

and athletic groups. 

The resources of the Harbor School are greatly enhanced through our distinctive 

partnerships with the Neighborhood House Charter School, UMass Boston, 

Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center, Dotwell, Very Special Arts of

Students currently in fifth grade at the Hernández are guaranteed a seat in the 6 th grade. 

Students K1-8 wishing to enter the school must apply during registration in January and will be on the waiting list. 

Grades K1-2 are assigned by the district. Once it is determined how many seats are available in grades 3-8 the 

school’s Community Field Coordinator will contact you in the order your name appears on the waiting list. The 

students will be given a reading comprehension benchmark test (both Spanish and English) to determine ability to 

work in both languages. If your child meets the criteria then he/she would be assigned to the available seat. 

What makes our school unique? 

We are a dual language school (English/Spanish): the first in the city of Boston (1970) and in the state of 

Massachusetts. Every student is taught in both English and Spanish regardless of their home language. Students are 

engaged in thematic studies, which vary according to the grade and the national standards that must be met. We 

are a Discovery School. This allows us to have different curriculum options (not the same texts, tests or schedules) that 

are the norm in the school system. We work cooperatively in teams teaching to meet the Whole School Improvement 

Plan. 

Starting in 2012, the Margarita Muñiz Academy (High School) opened its doors to all high school students who are 

learning in a dual language school or who have proficiency in both languages. All our 8 th graders will have a

Currently there are 6 Teachers of the Year and 2 Massachusetts Teachers of the Year teaching at our school. The

Extended Learning Time for all students until 4:15 p.m. that engages them in exciting and enriching activities 

as well as providing them with extra support in the development of math and literacy skills. Tenacity, City Year 

and Citizen Schools all offer programming to our 6 th graders as well as to our seventh and eighth graders. 

Enrichment Activities include: tackle football, soccer, basketball, track, softball, tennis, journalism, drama, linedancing, 

and art. 

AVID: Advancement Through Individual Determination: We have AVID elective classes for one hundred of our 

students who can benefit from an extra push that will launch them to success in college. The AVID students 

receive extra organizational and academic support. In addition, the school has adopted the AVID format for 

keeping a binder and for taking notes which helps support all of the students’ organizational skills an exciting 

arts program. 

A Major System in the Arts: Students take a variety of classes in the arts as sixth grade students and then 

choose to major in visual art, dance, and theater, as seventh and eighth grade students by taking a year-long 

course in their major and fulfilling certain benchmarks by the end of eighth grade. 

A Systematic Approach to Addressing Bullying: We teach the students in Advisory class how to report 

bullying to adults. We also train our staff to address bullying in an immediate and effective manner. We use 

the Olweus System, proven to be one of the most effective approaches throughout the world for dealing with 

bullying in a school. 

Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention (A.I.P.), in which students receive a wide array of counseling services 

that allow them to address their social and emotional needs and fully participate in the school.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. K-8 School exemplifies the true meaning of Dr. King’s dream. Students are not judged by 

the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. We celebrate and teach a different character trait each 

month to help build students’ self-esteem. To achieve academic success, we must first teach responsibility and 

productivity. Students are taught to serve the school and the community for the common good. 

How do we engage families in our school community? 

Families are welcome to visit the school. We are continuing “Wonderful Wednesdays” which originated from the 

Dickerman School. On those days, parents visit classrooms and witness daily instruction. Students in grades 2-8 have 

agenda books for homework and communication between school and home. A school compact is signed by the 

Principal/Teacher/Parent/Student to assist with academic and family success. 

How are we preparing our students for educational success? 

All students in grades 1 - 2 receive an additional 40 minutes of Math and Reading Enrichment each week. Resource 

Room teachers team with Regular Ed teachers for Math and ELA in grades 3-5. Students in grades 1 - 5 receive 90 

minutes for Reading and 70 minutes for Math each day. Grades 6 - 8 have 80 minute schedule blocks. All students 

receive 40 minutes of specialist classes (Art, Computer, Physical Education, Music, and Performing Arts). 

Mandatory uniform policy: White or Ash Grey buttoned polo shirt with collar or white dress shirt with collar. Black 

pants/skirt. Pants must be worn above the hips with a “plain belt”. No hooded sweatshirts.

Orchard Gardens is a welcoming, vibrant, neighborhood centered school where students are striving to 

demonstrate high achievement and mastery in all academic content areas including the arts. We believe that 

children perform better academically and socially when their families and communities are involved in their 

education and their lives. Our nearly 800 students are taught to be independent thinkers and learners. Our

Josiah Quincy Upper (JQUS) is conceptually part of a K-12 complex that includes Josiah Quincy Elementary 

School (JQES). Students at the completion of grade 5 at JQES automatically move up to JQUS. 


We regard JQUS as a permanent work in progress. School-based curriculum teams are always searching for 

curricula and strategies in all subjects to improve the quality of the school’s instructional programs. Currently, 

teachers are immersed in infusing the IB Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12 and planning for the formal 

introduction of the IB Middle Program in grades 6-10. Teachers also assume significant leadership roles in school 

decision making. Students are assigned to advisory groups that meet regularly with teacher leaders. The school 

has a longer school day four days a week. Teachers participate weekly in meetings of grade teams and/or 

subject teams. We have a strong college counseling program. JQUS also offers extensive after school activities. 

Quincy Upper School is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the International 

Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) to students in grades 11-12. We expect to receive approval in 2011- 

2012 of a proposal we submitted to the International Baccalaureate for formal authorization to offer IB’s Middle

The Mario Umana Academy prides itself on giving students a sense of ownership in the school and local community. We 

have many opportunities for success that are enhanced by having an expanded day schedule. We encourage students to 

participate in our free breakfast and lunch program. Our school offers a wide array of experiential learning for our students 

in conjunction with our community partners, which include: Tenacity, Boston Ballet, Zumix, East Boston Neighborhood Health 

Center, Waypoint Adventure, and the Society of Latino Engineers and Scientists. We are able to partner with so many 

organizations because of the flexibility within our daily schedule and our commitment to providing a wide range of 

opportunities for learning to our students. In addition, our student population is comprised of 52% English Language Learners, 

and also includes a highly specialized strand of intellectually impaired students. 


At the Umana, we expect all of our students to succeed. We model our school on the AVID approach and build strong 

organizational routines for students to take with them as they move through their academic years and life. A wide array of 

academic programs and supports, such as Study Island or First in Math, broaden students’ experiences and reinforce their 

academic skills. The expanded day schedule, which adds 10 additional hours to the school week, allows us to provide 

these and other enrichment programs. Utilizing the Achievement Network (ANET) and district assessments, we look at data 

regularly to monitor student academic progress, and are implementing the Academic Achievement Framework to ensure 

that not only are our students’ academic needs being met but their behavioral and emotional needs as well. 


Students can participate in a wide variety of sports and extracurricular activities as part of the school day. These include: 

soccer, swimming, tennis, dance, a Future Cities engineering competition and much, much more.

We are a K-8 inclusion school. We engage our students in experiential learning opportunities in the local 

environment and community. Analyzing real world problems is a central objective of our interdisciplinary 

curriculum. Social Justice and equity are themes embedded in each curriculum unit K-8 th grade. 

We have an extended learning day (7 hours) for all students, as well as surround care programming in Before 

School and Late Day. There is no longer a half day on Fridays. Our school day is now 9:30-4:30 every day. 


During the Extended Learning Day students in grades 5-8 are enrolled in enrichment and athletic activities. We 

also participate in an inter-scholastic athletic and academic league with other middle schools. The athletic 

teams are Touch Football, Soccer, and Basketball for both boys and girls. The academic competition is in 

spelling, chess and debate. This league practices after the 4:30 dismissal and games or competitions are often in 

the evenings or on Saturdays.
