series 400/500
jumbo roll winders for rigid film and sheet
Jumbo rolls with outside diameters of
up to 2000 mm are very important for
in-house thermoforming applications:
roll change and interruption of the thermoforming
process becomes necessary
only once per shift. SML‘s series
400/500 jumbo bobbin winders offered
in combination with SML sheet extrusion
lines are built for this purpose.
Each winding station consists of t
wo
trolleys with 3” or 6” pneumatic
winding shafts, or trolleys with steel
shafts. Up to 3 winding stations can
dispose one after the other to allow
for full-width winding, or 2-part or part
bobbin winding with 2 or 3 bobbins.
SML series 400/500 winders are combined
with an accumulator to allow for
the manual startup of the new bobbin
while the web is stopped. This concept
makes the winders easy and safe to
operate. The edge trimming and slitting
station is placed between the accumulator
and the winder. Guide rollers or
mechanical guides redirect the trims to
the edge trim granulator, situated next
to the extrusion line.
The principle of the winder is that for
each winding station there are 2 winding
trolleys. One trolley is active for
the actual bobbin and the second trolley
is in stand by for the manipulation
of the finished bobbin and for preparing
of the core on the new roll. Once
the required roll length or the outside
diameter is reached, the accumulator
is activated and the film is stopped in
front of the winding stations. A cross
cutting station just above each winding
station cuts the film. With a foot switch
the operator releases the film approx.
1 m to attach it to the new core on the
winding shaft of the second trolley.
The shaft is then accelerated, and the
film stored in the accumulator is released.
At the same time, the photocell
controlled gap winding roller arrangement
is lowered to its working position
(electric winders only), and the winder
is back in operation.
Two different configurations of jumbo
roll winders are available:
series 500:
- The driven accumulator working from
bottom to top position, where move-
ment and web tension are generated
by a servomotor. This system is suit-
able for gauges as low as 150 µm
and line speeds up to 70 m/min.
series 400 :
- With gravity accumulator working
from top to bottom position where
web tension is generated by gravity.
This system is available with limited
width and winding speed.
Both series can be supplied with either
hydraulically or electrically driven shafts:
- independent hydraulic motors are
used for heavy gauged materials, in
particular HIPS and PP. While the
maximum outside diameter is
2000 mm, the line speed is limited to
40 m/min
- independent AC drives are used for
sensitive, thin gauged materials. In
this case, the outside roll diameter is
limited to 1200 mm, but line speeds
of up to 70 m/min are possible.
