A Simple Change
It’s amazing what a simple change
can accomplish.
In July the Huntington-Cabell-Wayne
(HCW) Animal Control Shelter made a
simple change in their hours of operation.
They are now open until 8 pm on Tuesday
and Thursdays.
Friends of the Shelter, a community group
seeking to nurture and support positive
changes at the HCW Shelter, hosted a
party in recognition of this progress.
The extended hours offer the opportunity
for Free Test Hugs from the dogs, cats,
puppies and kittens during the summer.
The additional time became an instant
success. During the first week of evening
hours, seven adoptions were finalized,
several dogs were placed with rescue
groups,
10 cats,
including
two
“mommies”
with nine
kittens,
went into
foster
homes and
one family
reclaimed
their
missing
dog. One
simple
change
saved
nearly 30
lives in the
first week.

It takes a community to transform an
animal control facility and the Friends of
the Shelter extend their gratitude to the

HCW Animal Shelter Looks At New Addition
To meet a need
to update the
Huntington-
Cabell-Wayne
Animal Shelter
and to provide
more space to
house more
animals, a new
addition is being
considered.
Plans have
been drawn by Bob Bowen of Construction Advantage, member of the Tri-
State Home Builders Association, to help spark community interest in this
project. The proposal will nearly double the size of the current adoption floor.
More space means a better chance for survival for the animals in the facility.
The new director and his staff have given their approval of the plans and the
Huntington Parks and Recreation Board of Directors have seen the plans
and want to move forward with funding ideas. The new addition including
equipment, will run well over $150,000.

Friends oF the shelter
Friends of the Shelter have been
applauded by the Cabell County
Manager Chris Tatum and the Shelter
Director Jim Cumm for their hard
work and dedication in helping the
Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal
Shelter in a variety of ways over the
past few months.
“They promised Kuranda beds
for all the dogs and they supplied
them,” said Cumm. Currently they
are working on sealing the floors of
the shelter to prevent the spread of
disease.
Volunteers also
reconnected
the shelter
with Pet Finder
(a source
for animal
adoptions)
and the group
supplied a new
low resolution
camera for
taking photos
of animals to
be placed on
the internet.
The group
provided much
needed air
conditioning
for the cattery. In all, they have
provided thousands of dollars worth of
improvements without tax payer help.

The mission of Friends of the
Shelter is to improve the welfare of
animals who enter the Huntington-
Cabell-Wayne Animal Shelter. They
were formed by caring individuals
to promote animal adoptions and
well-being, and facility improvement
through positive change and
community involvement.
The next Friends of the Shelter
meeting will be Tuesday,
September 4 th from 5 to 7 pm.

Shelter Director Goes to No-Kill Conference
The HCW Animal Shelter Director is getting
serious about what it takes to improve the
save rate at his shelter. The No-Kill conference
teaches programs and services that have had
success in both urban and rural communities.
Classes include Turbocharging Pet Adoptions,
No Kill Animal Control, Rethinking Adoptions,
and The 90% Club which includes tips from
directors of the best performing shelters in the
country saving over 90% of animals.
Last month 140 animal were adopted, rescued or
returned to owners at HCWAS. Those were lucky
animals. Unfortunately several hundred other
animals had to be euthanized. Readers need
to understand that our local shelter is an animal
control facility. Controlling animal disease and
overpopulation is the main function of an animal
control facility. The new director is trying new
programs. The shelter is now staying open late
on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. However,
he still needs the help of animal owners to
increase the save rate. The greatest thing that an
animal owner can do is spay or neuter their pet.
If you have a local veterinarian please take your
pet there. If money is the problem then make use
of the low-cost coupon at the bottom of this page
for spay and neuter. This is not something to be
considered. It is a must-do in order to reduce

Volunteers Extraordinaire
When Stefanie O-Dell wanted to volunteer
at the HCW Animal Shelter she was not
quite 18 years old. The shelter has a policy
that anyone under the age of 18 could only
volunteer if they have a parent or guardian
present. This meant that her mother
Beverly also had to volunteer. Luckily, she
was willing to do so. That was last June
and they are still there. In fact, Beverly is
so good at her work that the director made
her the Volunteer Coordinator.
Both enjoy their time helping the animals
and put a lot of hours in every week. Last
month alone, over 170 volunteer hours
were logged, saving the shelter over
$1,232. If this wasn’t enough, Beverly and
Stefanie decided to take on a fund-raising
project. A yard sale at the shelter raised
$800 for the shelter’s Building Fund. Many
thanks to all the volunteers for their hard
work and dedication.
