2002 Spring Convocation 

The word “Convocation” arises from the Latin “con” 

meaning “together,” and “vocare” meaning “to call.” 

Our Convocation ceremony is a calling together of the new 

graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, symbolizing 

the historical practice of calling 

together all former graduates. In 

current times, the major functions 

of Convocation are the election of 

representatives to University 

governing bodies and the admission 

of candidates to degrees. The 

Chancellor, elected by Convocation 

as its Chair, is the highest official 

and spokesperson of the University. 

The Convocation ceremony marks 

the transition from the role of 

student to the holder of a degree 

with its accompanying rights and 

privileges. Candidates for degrees, 

known as graduands, having 

completed the requirements of a 

course of study, are recommended 

by college faculties and the 

University Council to receive 

degrees from the University of 

Saskatchewan. 

The ceremony, solemnized in the presence of the University 

community and family and friends of the graduands, consists 

of three parts: a procession marking the leaving of the old 

status and entering the new; the President’s statement to the 

graduands, the Secretary’s petition and 

the Chancellor’s consent for their 

admission; followed by individual 

presentation by their Dean and 

admission by the Chancellor to the 

degrees to which they are entitled. As 

graduates are admitted to their degrees, 

a graduation hood, which has a colour 

symbolizing a particular degree, is 

placed over each graduate’s head. A 

banner displaying the University crest 

is hung above the stage, as a symbol 

of the University’s authority to confer 

degrees. 

We honour and welcome this year’s graduates! 

Following the conferring of degrees 

and acceptance of each graduate as a 

member of Convocation, a reception 

is held – a celebration on the occasion 

of the formal transition from the role 

of learner to the role of producer and 

contributor in the field of the graduate’s 

choice. 


The Chancellor 

W. T. (Tom) Molloy 

Tom Molloy was born and raised in Saskatoon. He 

attended St. Thomas More College and later the College 

of Law, both at the University of Saskatchewan. He received 

his B.A. and LL.B. in 1964. He has practiced law in 

Saskatoon since graduation and is with 

the MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman’s 

Saskatoon office. He has represented the 

Government of Canada as the Chief Federal 

Negotiator in the successfully concluded 

treaties in Nunavut and with the Nisga’a in 

British Columbia and an Agreement in 

Principle with the Sechelt Indian Band. 

He presently represents Canada in treaty 

negotiations in British Columbia, Quebec, 

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince 

Edward Island and Nunavut. Mr. Molloy 

has been described as “Canada’s most 

expert treaty negotiator.” 

Mr. Molloy recently authored a book The 

World is our Witness: The Historic Journey 

of the Nisga’a into Canada. The book has 

won two Saskatchewan Book Awards, The Brenda MacDonald 

Riches First Book Award and the Non-fiction Award which 

was sponsored by the University of Saskatchewan. 

For his work in the community he has received a number of 

awards including the City of Saskatoon Certificate of 

Distinguished Community Service; Rotary Golden Wheels 

Award for Excellence, Saskatoon B’nai Brith “Proud of You 

Award” and the Head of the Public Service Award for 

Excellence in Service Delivery. 

In 1996 he was made an officer of the 

Order of Canada, with a citation that reads: 

He is widely known for his role as Chief 

Negotiator for the Government of Canada 

in the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement. 

His integrity, commitment to a just 

settlement and personable rapport have 

also been valuable in his leadership of 

numerous cultural, educational and 

charitable groups, not only in 

Saskatchewan but also nationally, including 

the Meewasin Foundation and 

PRIDE Canada. 

The University of Saskatchewan Alumni 

Association awarded him the 2000 

Alumni Honour Award in recognition of 

receiving notable acclaim for professional 

achievements, which in turn has enhanced the 

image of the University of Saskatchewan and its alumni. In 

January 2001, The Canadian Bar Association Saskatchewan 

Branch named him as the recipient of the Distinguished 

Service Award. 


Honorary Doctor of Letters 

Buffy Sainte-Marie 

Born on a Cree reservation in the Qu’Appelle Valley, 

Saskatchewan, Buffy Sainte-Marie was adopted and 

raised in Maine and Massachusetts. She received a Ph.D. 

in Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts and also 

holds degrees in both Oriental 

Philosophy and Education, influences 

which form the backbone of her music, 

visual art and social activism. 

As a college student in the early 1960s, 

Buffy Sainte-Marie became known as a 

writer of protest songs and love songs. 

She also had a unique career outside 

the United States, working in Europe, 

Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and 

Japan. She wrote songs and essays, 

established a scholarship foundation to 

fund Native American study, spent time 

with indigenous people in far away 

countries, received two medals from 

Queen Elizabeth II and presented a 

colloquium to Europe’s philosophers. 

She has served as an Adjunct Professor 

at York University, at Saskatchewan Indian Federated 

College and at Evergreen State College in Washington. 

Buffy and her son, Dakota Starblanket Wolfchild, became 

well known for their five years on Sesame Street, where 

they taught us that “Indians still exist.” Her song “Up 

Where We Belong,” as recorded by Joe Cocker and Jennifer 

Warnes for the film An Officer and A 

Gentleman, won an Academy Award in 

1982. She received the Order of 

Canada in 1998. 

She helped establish a new Juno 

Awards category for Music of 

Aboriginal Canada, and was chosen by 

the United Nations to proclaim the 

International Year of Indigenous 

People. Buffy Sainte-Marie continues 

to draw huge crowds, but never forgets 

her own people and performs regularly 

on the smallest of reservations across 

North America. Her art and music are 

also teaching tools, and she uses these 

continually to enlighten. 

Currently she operates the Cradleboard 

Teaching Project whose interactive multimedia CD-ROM 

SCIENCE: Through Native American Eyes serves children 

across North America. 


Honorary Doctor of Laws 

Bernard M. Michel 

Bernard Michel graduated in engineering from the 

Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, France in 1960. He has 

subsequently had a distinguished career in engineering 

and management in the mining and the nuclear industry in 

both Europe and North America. 

Bernard Michel has recently (March 21, 

2003) retired as chair and CEO of 

Cameco Corporation, the world’s largest 

uranium supplier. Mr. Michel played a 

leadership role in the growth and 

development of Cameco into a Canadian 

blue chip company, and is respected 

nationally and internationally for his 

management skills and business 

acumen. He is frequently invited to 

speak at international gatherings of the 

nuclear industry, and is a forceful 

advocate of Saskatchewan’s mining 

industry and of Canada’s nuclear 

technology in these fora and in media 

interviews worldwide. 

Under his leadership, Cameco has been a significant 

supporter of education at all levels for Saskatchewan’s 

northern residents, with particular interest in promoting 

education for Aboriginal students. To honour his personal 

and professional commitment to this objective, Cameco 

has recently established the Bernard Michel scholarship 

for Saskatchewan aboriginal students. In addition, the 

University of Saskatchewan has been a significant 

beneficiary of funds to support remedial programs for 

northern students entering engineering and science fields 

(CAPES); support of a scholarship for women in 

geological sciences; and provision of equipment for new 

state of the art geological laboratories. In 1995, the 

company established a Cameco Chair in 

aqueous and environmental 

geochemistry, headed currently by Dr. 

Jim Hendry. 

Mr. Michel was awarded the French 

Order of the Legion d’Honneur, in the 

rank of Chevalier, in 1998. He was a 

long-time member of the board of 

directors and executive committee of the 

Canadian Nuclear Association, and still 

serves on the board of directors of Ipsco 

Inc., and the Canadian Light Source Inc. 

Mr. Michel, in a quiet and unassuming 

manner, has been a sincere friend of the 

University of Saskatchewan, a stalwart 

supporter of the province and an 

excellent ambassador of the Canadian 

mining and nuclear industry. In the words of Rita Mirwald, 

Senior Vice-President Human Resources and Corporate 

Relations at Cameco, “Should Mr. Michel be fortunate 

enough to be selected for this honor [an honorary degree], 

it would provide a most fitting capstone to his 

distinguished professional career in the Canadian mining 

industry and an acknowledgement of his steadfast 

dedication to furthering the interests of the province”. 


Honorary Doctor of Laws 

Douglas D. Baldwin 

Douglas D. Baldwin was born in Yorkton, 

Saskatchewan. He received his Bachelor of Science 

(Chemical Engineering) from the University of 

Saskatchewan in 1958. 

Mr. Baldwin has had a distinguished 

career in the oil industry. In 1983, Mr. 

Baldwin was named Production 

Manager, Producing Department, Exxon 

Corporation in New York and returned to 

Esso Resources Canada Limited in 1986 

when he was appointed Vice-President 

of Business Services. He was appointed 

President and Chief Executive Officer of 

Esso Resources Canada Limited in 

January 1988. 

Mr. Baldwin was appointed as a Director 

of Exxon Production Research Company 

in February, 1988, and a Director of 

Imperial Oil in October, 1988. He was 

named to the position of Senior Vice- 

President and Director of Imperial Oil 

Limited, with responsibility for the resources division of 

Imperial Oil in 1992. In 1994, Mr. Baldwin was appointed 

a Director of the Imperial Oil Charitable Foundation, and 

appointed a Director of Exxon Exploration Company in 

1996. Mr. Baldwin retired from Imperial Oil and its 

affiliated companies at the end of 1998. 

Mr. Baldwin was elected to the TransCanada Board of 

Directors on April 30, 1999, and was appointed interim 

Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 1999. He was 

appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, 

TransCanada PipeLines Limited on 

September 22, 1999, retiring from the 

position on May 1, 2001. 

His affiliations include being a member 

of the Board of Governors, University of 

Calgary, Member of the Board of 

Directors of TransCanada PipeLines 

Limited, Talisman Energy Inc., UTS 

Energy Corporation, Citadel Group of 

Funds, Calgary Airport Authority. His 

past affiliations included being a former 

member of the Board of Directors of the 

Alberta Energy Research Institute, 

former Director of the Alberta Research 

Council, former Vice-President of 

Alberta Clean Air Strategic Alliance, and 

Past Chairman of the Canadian 

Petroleum Association, Canadian Oilmen’s Executive 

Association, Calgary Zoo Foundation, and Past President 

of the Calgary Petroleum Club. 

The sum of his work-related achievements, industry 

commitments, and community service are indicative of an 

outstanding individual deserving of public and scholarly 

recognition. 


Distinguished Researcher Award 

David Smith 

The Distinguished Researcher Award recognizes a faculty 

member’s contribution to scholarship through the 

creation, expansion and critique of knowledge. David E. Smith, 

Professor of Political Studies, College of Arts & Science, is 

the recipient of the Spring 2003 award. 

Professor Smith earned a Bachelor of 

Arts at the University of Western Ontario 

(1959), and both a Master of Arts (1962) 

and a Doctorate of Philosophy (1964) 

from Duke University. He began his 

career at the University of Saskatchewan 

in 1964, first as a member of the 

Department of Economics and Political 

Science and then in 1985 as a member 

of the newly created Department of 

Political Studies. In 1987 he joined a 

select group of individuals to be awarded 

a Doctorate of Letters by the University. 

Professor Smith is a leading authority 

on constitutional governance in Canada. 

In particular, his scholarship explores 

the central political institutions and political processes of 

Canadian democracy. His recent monographs, The 

Invisible Crown: The First Principle of Government and 

The Republican Option in Canada: Past and Present, are 

ground-breaking and highly creative analyses of 

previously understudied aspects of Canadian political life. 

His most recent work, The Canadian Senate in Bicameral 

Perspective, will be released in the upcoming year. His 

scholarship has not only contributed to political studies in 

Canada, but has informed studies of comparative politics 

generally. 

Professor Smith’s scholarly work covers a broad spectrum. 

He has examined prairie political culture, political leaders 

and public intellectuals, Canadian broadcasting, and 

emergency government. His early work on the politics of 

Saskatchewan remains a classic in the 

field. 

Professor Smith’s career is also 

characterized by a tremendous 

investment of time and energy in public 

service. He has been actively involved in 

the Canadian Political Science 

Association both as president and as a 

member of the executive, and in the 

Humanities and Social Science 

Federation of Canada. He has 

contributed to the work of Parliament - 

providing expert testimony to 

parliamentary committees considering 

measures such as the Clarity Bill, and 

the Royal Assent Bill, and has served as 

a Commissioner of electoral boundaries. 

He also served as chair of the Department of Political 

Studies at the University. 

Professor Smith is a member of the Royal Society of 

Canada and has been awarded a number of prestigious 

fellowships including the Killam Research Scholarship 

1994-1995, and SSHRC’s Jules and Gabrielle Leger 

Fellowship 1992-93. 

Professor Smith has made nationally and internationally 

recognized contributions to the fields of Western Canadian 

and constitutional studies. He is a deserving recipient of 

this award. 


Distinction in Public Service 

and Extension Award 

James Dosman 

The Award for Public Service and Extension 

recognizes a member of faculty who has made an 

outstanding effort to further the University’s public service 

and extension mission and has extended the University’s 

expertise to the wider community. James 

Dosman, Director of the Institute of 

Agricultural, Rural and Environmental 

Health, is the recipient for Spring 2003. 

Dr. Dosman earned a Doctor of Medicine 

from the University of Saskatchewan in 

1963. After working for four years as a 

general practitioner in Saskatoon, he 

completed a residency in internal and 

respiratory medicine at McGill University. 

In 1975 he joined the University of 

Saskatchewan as the founding head of 

the Division of Respiratory Medicine, 

College of Medicine. 

In 1986, Dr. Dosman was instrumental in 

creating the Centre for Agricultural 

Medicine to do research and carry out 

programs relevant to the health of Saskatchewan farmers. 

He has served as director of the Centre since its inception 

and has expanded and diversified its programs to the point 

in 2001 when, under his leadership, it became the Institute 

of Agricultural, Rural and Environmental Health. It’s the 

only institute in Canada that provides research, education, 

and health promotion to agricultural and rural 

populations. 

In 1988, Dr. Dosman, in conjunction with the 

Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities 

(S.A.R.M.) and rural municipal councils, established the 

Agricultural Health and Safety Network. Unique in Canada, 

this program provides education services, respiratory 

health and hearing screening programs, courses in 

emergency preparedness and other educational 

opportunities to the rural population. 

The program now extends directly to 

more than 25,000 Saskatchewan farm 

families. 

Dr. Dosman has also been instrumental 

in establishing rural health safety 

programs at the national and 

international levels. In 1992, he became 

the chair of the newly-created Canadian 

Coalition of Agricultural Health and 

Safety, and oversaw a number of new 

initiatives, including the first annual 

Agricultural Health and Safety 

Conference, the Canadian Agricultural 

Injury Surveillance Program, and the 

Canadian Agriculture Safety Program. 

Dr. Dosman is a well-recognized 

presence in rural communities, attending numerous 

agriculture meetings, speaking at conferences, and 

supporting many research projects which have helped 

reduce dangers in the agriculture profession. 

Dr. Dosman’s work with the people of Saskatchewan is 

characterized by a creative and innovative approach to 

problems and issues, as well as a true concern for the lives 

of rural people. His endeavours have brought the 

University to the people of the province. Dr. Dosman is a 

worthy recipient of the award. 


Master Teacher Award 

Sheila Rutledge Harding 

The Master Teacher Award was established to emphasize the 

importance of teaching at the University of Saskatchewan 

and to recognize and honour those faculty members who excel in 

teaching. The Selection Committee has chosen Professor Sheila 

Rutledge Harding of the College of Medicine 

to be the recipient of this prestigious award at 

this Convocation. Born in Peterborough, 

Ontario, Professor Harding earned her M.D. at 

the University of Western Ontario in 1981. 

Before coming to the College of Medicine, 

University of Saskatchewan, in 1988, she did 

residency training in Internal Medicine and 

Hematology in London, Ontario, and Toronto. 

In 1997, she was a Lecturer at the University 

of Toronto. She was also Hematologist-in- 

Charge of the Blood Transfusion Laboratory, 

Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Harding is 

currently a Professor in the Department of 

Pathology, with a specialty in Hematology. 

Among her students and colleagues, Dr. 

Harding is a respected educator, highly 

regarded for her teaching and her desire to 

help her students succeed. It is hard to decide which is her major 

strength: rapport with students or her ability to communicate and 

teach effectively. One of her students has written, “Her ability to 

break down complex problems into logical sequences has made 

these topics memorable . . . . As first-year medical students, we 

often heard that medical school was like ‘drinking from a fire 

hose.’ Dr. Rutledge Harding made sure we knew we weren’t the 

first to feel overwhelmed.” Another student says, “As an educator, 

she was responsible for the curriculum changes that have been 

recently made at the U of S, resulting in a much greater emphasis 

on student-centered learning.” This kind of skill and dedication 

has led to her being nominated for several teaching awards, 

including the Teaching Excellence Award, College of Medicine, in 

1999. All who wrote on Dr. Harding’s behalf celebrate the breadth 

of her expertise and the depth of her enthusiasm for medical 

education. 

With Dr. Jim Spooner, she helped to bring the Teaching Improvement 

Project Systems (TIPS) course to Saskatoon. She trained as a 

TIPS facilitator in Philadelphia and here, 

assuming local responsibility for the course 

in 1995. Dr. Harding’s TIPS course developed 

a reputation for excellence beyond the city 

limits. The University of Calgary asked her to 

begin a TIPS course there, helping them 

organize and train their own facilitators. Their 

Director of Surgical Education, Dr. J. G. 

DesCoteaux comments: “She carries an 

incredible baggage of techniques and 

approaches, keeping the learning experience 

motivating and helping the learner retain the 

new knowledge.” 

A Master Teacher is expected to be a worthy 

researcher as well. Dr. Rutledge Harding has 

published numerous articles in refereed 

journals, participated in several research 

studies, and contributed to many conferences 

and conference proceedings. She is a highly respected and much 

sought-after professional hematologist and physician. 

Students tell us that Sheila Rutledge Harding wears her outstanding 

academic achievements lightly. She has made outstanding 

contributions to this institution and to wider medical education 

and the higher education community in teaching and leadership. 

In the words of a fourth-year student: “Dr. Harding is amazing!” 

Her teaching is exemplary, as attested by both students and faculty. 

She has demonstrated leadership locally, nationally, and 

internationally. The University of Saskatchewan is indeed fortunate 

to have such a fine teaching colleague on its staff. She is most 

deserving of this honour. 


President’s Service Award 

Eileen Herteis 

Eileen Herteis brings an infectious passion for good 

teaching to the University of Saskatchewan. Colleagues 

of the Programme Director for The Gwenna Moss Teaching 

and Learning Centre (TLC) say when this is combined with 

her other qualities – good humour, 

excellent presentation skills, boundless 

helpfulness, and a warmth in dealings with 

faculty, staff and students – it all adds up 

to a truly outstanding contribution to the 

U of S. 

This spring, they honour her with the U of S 

President’s Service Award. 

Her nominator and co-workers say Herteis 

“puts life and sparkle into all her University 

endeavours. She has made the University a 

better place in which to work and learn.” 

As the TLC’s Programme Director, she 

organizes and presents instructional 

development workshops for faculty, 

sessional lecturers and graduate students, 

writes articles on teaching and learning, 

pulls together resource materials for the Centre and for its 

website, and co-ordinates the Peer Consultation program. 

Colleagues applaud her excellence at all these activities, and 

note how she has inspired them to think more deeply about 

their teaching and work to improve it: “Eileen is the supporter, 

the encourager, the initiator and problem-solver...” “Always 

upbeat, (she) looks past faults in the rest of us to see our 

possibilities, and helps us get there.” “Eileen Herteis excels in 

every way.” 

Herteis was born in a small town in southern Scotland and 

earned an undergraduate degree in English and Latin from the 

University of Glasgow. In 1977 she won a scholarship to study 

at McGill University in Montreal and there she earned a Master 

of Arts degree in English Literature. She also married a mining 

engineer, leading to a number of future relocations. At Kirkland 

Lake, in northern Ontario, Herteis found herself in demand to 

teach at local schools and at Northern 

College. “Teaching went from being the last 

thing I wanted to do, to the only thing.” 

She moved to Saskatoon in 1981 and 

taught classes at Saskatoon Business 

College and English as a Second Language 

for the U of S Extension Division. In 1988 

she moved to Nova Scotia and taught at 

four universities – St. Mary’s, Mount Saint 

Vincent, Technical University of Nova 

Scotia, and Dalhousie. She set up 

Dalhousie’s first Orientation to Teaching 

program and worked for six years as 

program co-ordinator at its Instructional 

Development Office. 

In 1997 Herteis, husband Brian and 

daughter Anne returned to Saskatoon and 

she rejoined the U of S staff, first working 

with Angie Wong in Prior Learning Assessment and 

Recognition (PLAR), then with Gwenna Moss in Instructional 

Development, and then with the new Teaching and Learning 

Centre when it opened in the summer of 2000. 

Herteis loves the generosity of people at the U of S and the 

feeling that individuals matter. She gains satisfaction from 

finding ways to help good teaching gain recognition. And 

while she takes pride in organizing the high-profile 

conferences and workshops, “my true joy is in the small 

things, the one-on-one conversations with teachers, the 

chance to listen, be an ally, or boost morale. That’s how I can 

make a difference.” 


Governor General’s Academic Medals 

These medals are awarded to the undergraduate student and graduate student with the highest academic 

standing. 

Darin Brent White 

(Silver Medal) 

Darin White was born and raised in Kindersley 

Saskatchewan. He graduates with a Bachelor of Science 

Degree with High Honours in Physiology. Darin is the 

recipient of the Earl of Bessborough Prize and the Haslam 

Medal as the most distinguished graduate in the College of 

Arts and Science for the May 2003 Convocation 

Darin received the Saskatchewan Governor General’s Medal 

upon graduating from Grade 12 and has been the recipient 

of numerous awards and scholarships during his academic 

career at the University of Saskatchewan. These awards 

include: the University of Saskatchewan Chancellor’s First 

and Best Scholarship, University of Saskatchewan 

Undergraduate Scholarships, the SaskPower Scholarship, 

Dr. Valentine Gus Criswick Scholarship, just to name a few. 

Darin has also been named on the Dean’s Honour List 

every year, and received an NSERC Undergraduate 

Research Award in 2002 and in 2003. 

As well as excelling in his academics he is also a member 

of the University of Saskatchewan Track and Field team and 

was named CIAU First Team Academic All-Canadian. 

Darin has been accepted to the M.D., C.M. Program at 

McGill University and has applications to M.D. programs 

pending at other institutions including the University of 

Saskatchewan. He intends to complete an M.D./Ph.D. and 

to pursue clinical practice, medical research, and medical 

education. 

Nathan Colin Peters 

(Gold Medal) 

N athan Colin Peters was born to George and Patricia 

Peters in Faro, Yukon, on March 17th 1974. Nathan 

attended elementary school in Faro, Saskatoon, and Asquith, 

Saskatchewan. Nathan also attended high school in Asquith, 

graduating in 1992. Nathan continued his education at the 

University of Saskatchewan, receiving a 4-yr. B.Sc. Honours 

degree in Microbiology. In the fall of 1997, Nathan began 

graduate studies under the supervision of Dr. Peter Bretscher 

in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Nathan’s 

graduate work involved the development of a novel assay 

system to allow for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of 

a specific type of lymphocyte, the activated CD4 + T-helper 

cell, involved in initiating and regulating immune responses. 

Nathan used this system to provide evidence that the initiation 

of an immune response requires cooperation between 

CD4 + T-helper cells, and in the absence of this cooperation 

an immune response is not initiated. Nathan’s research is 

significant as it provides a context for understanding the 

prevention and initiation of immune responses. For instance, 

how autoimmunity such as diabetes may arise and how it 

might be averted, how strong responses to tumors might 

best be achieved, and how vaccines can be made to be more 

effective. Nathan will be continuing his studies as a postdoctoral 

fellow at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, 

Maryland. Nathan wishes to acknowledge the excellence of 

his supervisor, Dr. Peter Bretscher, the contributions of all 

those involved in his education, and the love and support of 

his family, especially that of his wife, Nuvyn.

History of the University of Saskatchewan 

The University of Saskatchewan was established by 

the University Act on April 3, 1907, only 18 months 

after Saskatchewan became a province. 

The people of the province, as well as their 

government, were instrumental in shaping the new 

University. The provincial government requested all 

residents who were graduates of a Canadian or British 

university to form the first Convocation and elect the 

University’s Senate. The Senate, in turn, elected five 

members to the first Board of Governors, while the 

province appointed three. In 1908, the Board selected 

Professor Walter Charles Murray, of Dalhousie 

University, as the first President. 

Classes in Arts and Science began in September, 1909, 

in downtown Saskatoon. Construction of the campus 

began in 1910 and the first buildings were occupied 

in the fall of 1912. They included the College Building 

(Administration Building), Saskatchewan Hall (a 

student residence), residences for the Dean of 

Agriculture and the President, a laboratory for 

Engineering, and a number of farm buildings. 

From the beginning, the University established an 

emphasis on research and teaching in a context of 

community service, and encouraged co-operation 

among departments and divisions in tackling 

common problems. The development of rustresistant 

strains of wheat, for example, initiated by 

the University and federal and provincial research 

agencies, has been of untold value to the prairie 

economy. 

In 1909, the University had 70 students and 5 

professors, including the President. Today there are 

over 19,000 students studying in 13 colleges and 1 

school. This is the only university in Canada with five 

health-science colleges and a major teaching hospital 

on the same campus. The University offers Spring 

and Summer Session, Evening Courses, Independent 

Studies courses and Distance Education as well as 

on-campus daytime courses. 

The University of Saskatchewan overlooks the South 

Saskatchewan River from a 755 hectare site. The 

campus consists of 147 hectares with the remaining 

being a research park, the University farm and 

experimental plots. 

Most early buildings on campus are Collegiate Gothic 

in style and are constructed in a local dolomite, 

popularly known as greystone. Subsequently 

constructed buildings also have greystone, as well 

as Tyndall stone (pre-cut slabs quarried in Tyndall, 

Manitoba), concrete, brick, glass and aggregate 

facings. 

The University offers many points of interest for 

visitors: the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Museum of 

Natural Sciences, Museum of Antiquities, Biology 

Museum, Pharmaceutical Museum, the Observatory, 

the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, the St. Thomas More 

Gallery, Rugby Chapel, the Little Stone Schoolhouse, 

the Memorial Gates, Patterson Garden, and the 

Kenderdine Gallery.
