Includes <strong>the</strong> papers <strong>of</strong> Cornelius Thruston Chase (1819-<br />

1870), which comprise reports on Confederate hospitals in Virginia<br />

and South Carolina, medical contracts with private physicians<br />

in Richmond, Va., provision returns, circulars and special<br />

orders relating to <strong>the</strong> Medical Department, CSA, lists <strong>of</strong><br />

deserters, quartermaster reports, reports on prisoners <strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong>,<br />

and reports on sick and wounded soldiers. Also contains correspondence<br />

with slave traders (Browning, Moore and Company,<br />

E. H. Stokes) operating in Virginia during <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>, and a sketch<br />

Diaries kept by Chase during <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong> contain accounts <strong>of</strong><br />

Cabinet meetings, and private meetings with President Lincoln,<br />

William Se<strong>war</strong>d, Edwin M. Stanton, Henry Halleck, George B.<br />

McClellan, and various o<strong>the</strong>r political and military leaders.<br />

Subjects discussed include <strong>the</strong> evaluation, selection, and assignment<br />

<strong>of</strong> generals, military strategy, <strong>the</strong> disposition <strong>of</strong> troops,<br />

<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> black troops, <strong>the</strong> draft, <strong>war</strong> finance, and <strong>the</strong> Emancipation<br />

Proclamation. Also includes correspondence with George<br />

S. Denison, Chase's <strong>of</strong>ficial and personal representative in New<br />

Orleans, La., June 1862-Mar. 1865, and reports <strong>from</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />

and Treasury agents in <strong>the</strong> South on <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>,<br />

conditions in <strong>the</strong> South and in <strong>the</strong> Confederate Army, and <strong>the</strong><br />
