during <strong>the</strong> Rebellion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn States, 1861-5." Describes<br />

Carter's efforts to organize and train loyalist volunteers <strong>from</strong><br />

east Tennessee (1st and 2d East Tennessee Volunteers), marches,<br />

morale, reconnaissance expeditions, plans for <strong>the</strong> capture and<br />

fortification <strong>of</strong> Cumberland Gap, <strong>the</strong> battles <strong>of</strong> Logan's Cross<br />

Roads, Ky., and Kinston, N.C., and Carter's service as provost<br />

marshal general in East Tennessee.<br />

Battle <strong>of</strong> 1st Manassas and his service aboard <strong>the</strong> U.S.S.<br />

Minnesota at Hampton Roads, Va., Pensacola, Fla., and <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong><br />

coast <strong>of</strong> North Carolina. Includes Cartter's eyewitness account<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle between <strong>the</strong> Monitor and Merrimac and information<br />

concerning <strong>the</strong> transportation <strong>of</strong> prisoners <strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong> <strong>from</strong><br />

North Carolina to New York. Also contains a few letters <strong>of</strong> 2d<br />

Lt. David Kellogg Cartter, Jr. (d. 1862), 2d Ohio Cavalry, concerning<br />

<strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong> in Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas,<br />

<strong>Library</strong> as a supplement to <strong>the</strong> diary he kept during his<br />

service aboard <strong>the</strong> C.S.S. Chickamauga, 1863-65. Contains<br />

additional information on tactics employed by blockade runners,<br />

prize vessels, deserters, prisoners <strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong>, and Gen. B. F. Butler's<br />

Fort Fisher expedition. Cary's diary was used by <strong>the</strong> State<br />

Department in <strong>the</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alabama claims.<br />
