Chiefly letters <strong>from</strong> Torrey to his wife, 1862-65, written<br />

during campaigns in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Red River Campaign <strong>of</strong> 1864, and <strong>the</strong> Siege <strong>of</strong> Mobile.<br />

Includes observations on diet, disease, deaths, medical care,<br />

and morale at military hospitals in Mississippi and Tennessee,<br />

written while Torrey served in <strong>the</strong> ambulance corps, as well as<br />

remarks on camp life, marches, generalship, guerrilla <strong>war</strong>fare,<br />

deserters, prisoners <strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong>, loyalist volunteers in Arkansas,<br />

blacks, and <strong>the</strong> political attitude <strong>of</strong> soldiers. Also contains<br />

Torrey's diary, Jan. 1, 1863- Dec. 31, 1865 (3 v.), commission,<br />

discharge, and pension papers.<br />
