Pleasonton, and as colonel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 3d New Jersey Cavalry.<br />

Includes information on courts-martial, <strong>the</strong> suffering <strong>of</strong><br />

noncombatants, marches, training, discipline, casualties, guerrilla<br />

<strong>war</strong>fare, rank disputes, appointments and promotions,<br />

drunkenness, and desertions. Miscellaneous items include a<br />

report on <strong>the</strong> organization <strong>of</strong> General Keyes' command at<br />

Yorktown, an outline <strong>of</strong> Suydam's military career, lists <strong>of</strong><br />

marches in which Suydam participated, and a diary kept during<br />

<strong>the</strong> Peninsular Campaign, Apr. 4—June 2, 1862, and as<br />

colonel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 3d New Jersey Cavalry during <strong>the</strong> Shenandoah<br />

Valley Campaign <strong>of</strong> 1864. Principal correspondents include<br />
