Aeronautic Corps, <strong>the</strong> design and operation <strong>of</strong> balloons, reconnaissance<br />

flights, <strong>the</strong> defense <strong>of</strong> Washington, D.C., <strong>the</strong> Peninsular,<br />

Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville campaigns, Confederate<br />

morale at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>, and Confederate<br />

reaction to <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> balloons. Also includes sketches showing<br />

Confederate troop positions at Bailey's Crossroads, Va., Aug.<br />

27, 1861, and fortifications around Richmond, Va., June 14,<br />

1862. Diary entries consist largely <strong>of</strong> notes made during reconnaissance<br />

flights and figures on pay for noncombatants in <strong>the</strong><br />

Aeronautic Corps. Principal correspondents include Joseph<br />

Hooker, Andrew A. Humphreys, George B. McClellan, George<br />

G. Meade, Fitz-John Porter, and Edwin M. Stanton.<br />
