of the Confederate States of America; and a letter from Jacob
Thompson to Benjamin, Dec. 3, 1864, Toronto [Canada], concerning
the organization and activities of the Sons of Liberty in
the northwestern United States, plans for a general uprising in
Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio by Confederate sympathizers, the
loss of arms stored at Indianapolis, plans to take over the
steamer Michigan and free Confederate prisoners of war at
Johnson's Island, efforts to disrupt northern finance by buying
and exporting gold, and other subversive activities.
