maps, court-martial records, and <strong>of</strong>ficial correspondence concerning<br />

Sch<strong>of</strong>ield's command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Army <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Frontier and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Missouri, and operations in <strong>the</strong> Atlanta<br />

and Franklin and Nashville campaigns. Cartographic items<br />

comprise maps <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battlefields <strong>of</strong> Totopotomoy Creek, Be<strong>the</strong>sda<br />

Church, North Anna, <strong>the</strong> Wilderness, and Spotsylvania; a<br />

map <strong>of</strong> Sparta, Tenn., and vicinity (1863); and a topographical<br />

sketch <strong>of</strong> Bowling Green, Ky., and environs. Also includes a<br />

post<strong>war</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Franklin and Nashville Campaign by<br />

Capt. William M. Wherry, aide-de-camp to Sch<strong>of</strong>ield; and a<br />

diary, Aug. 26-Oct. 29, 1863, kept by Sch<strong>of</strong>ield as commander<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Missouri. Diary entries concern <strong>the</strong><br />

generalship <strong>of</strong> Samuel R. Curtis, popular support for Gen.<br />

Thomas Ewing, <strong>the</strong> political situation in Missouri, radical<br />

opposition to Sch<strong>of</strong>ield, military organization, recruitment, and<br />

black recruits. Also includes copies <strong>of</strong> letters <strong>from</strong> President<br />

Lincoln to Sch<strong>of</strong>ield, Oct. 1,1863, on Federal policy in Missouri,<br />

and <strong>from</strong> Charles D. Drake, Oct. 5,1863, stating <strong>the</strong> President's<br />

reasons for not removing Sch<strong>of</strong>ield <strong>from</strong> command. Correspondents<br />
