depredations by both Union and Confederate soldiers, <strong>the</strong> attitude<br />

and conduct <strong>of</strong> noncombatants, black life, <strong>the</strong> attitude <strong>of</strong><br />

blacks to<strong>war</strong>d <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong>, <strong>the</strong> use and treatment <strong>of</strong> blacks by<br />

Union soldiers, sou<strong>the</strong>rn Unionists, inflation, disease, spies,<br />

military organization, and generalship. Also contains information<br />

on <strong>the</strong> battles <strong>of</strong> Perryville, Ky., and Murfreesboro, Tenn.,<br />

and a skirmish at Rowlett's Station, Ky., Dec. 17, 1861; and a<br />

short history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 79th Pennsylvania written by Captain<br />

Nevin in Dec. 1864.<br />
