a foot soldier and a wagoner in <strong>the</strong> Antietam and Fredericksburg<br />

campaigns. Describes <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> over 300 Confederate<br />

soldiers who became ill after partaking <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Maryland harvest<br />

during <strong>the</strong> Antietam Campaign, camp life, diet, disease,<br />

and hospital care. Also includes three letters <strong>from</strong> Rice to his<br />

family and relatives in New York, 1862—63.<br />

impressment and treatment <strong>of</strong> blacks as laborers. Also describes<br />

acute drunkenness in <strong>the</strong> Army <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Potomac, <strong>the</strong> Wilderness<br />

Campaign, guerrilla attacks on wounded Federal soldiers, and<br />

casualties in <strong>the</strong> 2d Vermont. Includes a record <strong>of</strong> Richardson's<br />
