prisoners <strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong> in Richmond, Va., lack <strong>of</strong> confidence in<br />

Gen. Charles P. Stone, and McEwen's application for a lieutenancy<br />

in <strong>the</strong> 3d Minnesota Volunteers. Also contains an unsigned<br />

letter in a different hand portraying <strong>the</strong> excitement <strong>of</strong> new<br />

recruits at Camp Utley, Wis., in May or June 1861.<br />
