River Campaign <strong>of</strong> 1864, <strong>the</strong> Shenandoah Valley Campaign <strong>of</strong><br />

1864 (particularly <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Cedar Creek), and <strong>the</strong> Carolinas<br />

Campaign. Provides information on camp life, marches,<br />

foraging expeditions, morale, disease, hospital care, deaths,<br />

conscripts, prisoners <strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong>, guerrilla <strong>war</strong>fare, attacks on transports<br />

and supply ships on <strong>the</strong> Mississippi River, black life,<br />

attitudes to<strong>war</strong>d black soldiers, and <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong> on<br />

noncombatants in Louisiana. Also, <strong>war</strong>time entries in <strong>the</strong><br />

diary <strong>of</strong> Ellen Low Mills include remarks on <strong>the</strong> U.S.S. Monitor,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gettysburg Campaign, and <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> vessels owned by<br />
