About Richmond," by Hunter McGuire, medical director <strong>of</strong><br />

General Jackson's command; and several post<strong>war</strong> maps <strong>of</strong> battlefields<br />

in Virginia. Also contains <strong>the</strong> diary <strong>of</strong> Hotchkiss'<br />

son-in-law, Lt. Samuel Thomas McCullough, Aug. 11,<br />

1862-June 22,1865, kept during <strong>the</strong> Gettysburg, Spotsylvania,<br />

Cold Harbor, and Petersburg campaigns and while a prisoner<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>war</strong> at Old Capital Prison and Johnson's Island, and <strong>the</strong><br />

diary <strong>of</strong> Alfred Welton, 9th Indiana Volunteers, Aug. 14,<br />

1861-Oct. 17, 1862. McCullough's diary contains remarks on<br />

camp life, discipline, morale, hospital care, desertions, battles<br />

and skirmishes, and <strong>the</strong> suffering <strong>of</strong> noncombatants in Virginia.<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Index, a Confederate newspaper published in London,<br />

England, and to <strong>the</strong> London-based Confederate States <strong>of</strong> America<br />

Commercial Agency. Also contains accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> C.S.<br />

State Department secret service fund. Principal recipients are<br />

Robert M. T. Hunter and Judah P. Benjamin. Also letterbook,<br />

May 28, 1864-June 16, 1865, containing chiefly personal<br />

correspondence. Includes a few remarks on efforts to recruit<br />

British soldiers whose terms <strong>of</strong> service were about to expire for<br />
