Describes Hayden's work under Gen. Ambrose Burnside in<br />

clearing obstructions <strong>from</strong> channels and harbors along <strong>the</strong> coast<br />

<strong>of</strong> North Carolina, and his service under Adms. John A.<br />

Dahlgren and Samuel Phillips Lee in 1863 and 1864. Includes<br />

observations on <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> Forts Clark and Hatteras, <strong>the</strong><br />

Battle <strong>of</strong> Roanoke Island, <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> New Bern, and naval<br />

affairs in Virginia and South Carolina. Also contains Hayden's<br />

suggestions on <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> mines and torpedoes, and<br />
