and <strong>the</strong> transportation <strong>of</strong> troops and supplies, and <strong>the</strong><br />

progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong> in nor<strong>the</strong>rn Virginia. Also includes General<br />

Haupt's observations on <strong>the</strong> generalship <strong>of</strong> Ambrose E.<br />

Volunteers), and convalescent soldiers in hospitals at<br />

Beaufort, S.C. Letters by Doctor Hawks discuss his work with<br />

freedmen, black life, and <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>war</strong> in South<br />

Carolina. Letters by <strong>the</strong> Hill bro<strong>the</strong>rs concern <strong>the</strong> Port Royal<br />

expedition, <strong>the</strong> occupation <strong>of</strong> Jacksonville, Fernandina, and St.<br />

Augustine, Fla., and camp life. Also contains correspondence<br />

between Es<strong>the</strong>r Hawks and members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Freedmen's Relief<br />
