<strong>of</strong>ficer on <strong>the</strong> headquarters staff at Richmond, Va., where<br />

Gorgas served as chief <strong>of</strong> ordnance. Contains remarks on<br />

generalship, events in Richmond, <strong>the</strong> flight <strong>of</strong> Confederate military<br />

and political leaders during <strong>the</strong> Appomattox Campaign,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> problems facing both blacks and whites in <strong>the</strong> post<strong>war</strong><br />
