INFORMATION LEAFLET<br />
Health Visitors/Public Health Nurses are Registered Nurses <strong>with</strong> additional specialist<br />
qualifications in Community Health/Public Health Nursing.<br />
Health Visitors/Public Health Nurses work <strong>with</strong> individuals, families, groups <strong>and</strong> whole<br />
communities to:<br />
♦ Identify health needs<br />
♦ Improve health & well-being in the population<br />
♦ Reduce inequalities in health<br />
♦ Prevent disease & minimise its impact<br />
They work together <strong>with</strong> other healthcare agencies, local authority pr<strong>of</strong>essionals <strong>and</strong><br />
voluntary agencies.<br />
Health Visitors/Public Health Nurses work closely <strong>with</strong> all members <strong>of</strong> the Primary Health<br />
Care Team <strong>with</strong>in your GP surgery. They do not wear a uni<strong>for</strong>m but do carry an<br />
identification badge, which shows their Name, Title <strong>and</strong> Photograph. Clients are encouraged<br />
to seek identification.<br />
Health Visitors'/Public Health Nurses' core working hours are Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm.<br />
An answer machine service is available <strong>and</strong> messages are checked twice daily during<br />
working hours.<br />
Health Visitors/Public Health Nurses have a role in health promotion <strong>and</strong> health education<br />
<strong>with</strong> all age groups <strong>and</strong> are skilled in assessing <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fering in<strong>for</strong>mation on a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />
health issues, such as:<br />
Accident Prevention Domestic Abuse<br />
Antenatal Care Drugs <strong>and</strong> Alcohol<br />
Child Development Family Planning<br />
Child Protection Nutrition<br />
Chronic Disease Management Parenting<br />
Continence Postnatal Care<br />
Counselling Smoking Cessation<br />
Depression/Stress Weight Management<br />
