Early Years <strong>and</strong> Childcare Services<br />
The Education Department also has lead responsibility <strong>for</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dundee</strong>’s Early Years<br />
<strong>and</strong> Childcare Service. This provides a range <strong>of</strong> early education, childcare <strong>and</strong> parent<br />
services, including Sure Start <strong>Dundee</strong> <strong>for</strong> children aged 0-3 <strong>and</strong> their families, pre-school<br />
education <strong>for</strong> children aged 3-5 <strong>and</strong> childcare, including out <strong>of</strong> school childcare, <strong>for</strong> children<br />
aged 0-14.<br />
A multi-agency panel co-ordinated by the Educational Psychology Service, <strong>with</strong><br />
representation from health, education <strong>and</strong> social work meets to share assessment<br />
in<strong>for</strong>mation about pre-school children <strong>with</strong> additional support needs in order to make<br />
recommendations about appropriate pre-school placement. Parent’s views <strong>and</strong> preferences<br />
are <strong>of</strong> central importance <strong>with</strong>in the decision making process. Wherever possible we try to<br />
place children <strong>with</strong>in local nurseries. All nurseries are working to develop expertise in<br />
meeting a range <strong>of</strong> needs. We have a range <strong>of</strong> specialist provision <strong>with</strong>in nurseries, including<br />
those at Frances Wright Pre-School Centre, Kirkton Nursery, Ardler Nursery <strong>and</strong> Woodlea<br />
<strong>Children</strong>’s Centre.<br />
The Early Years Service also works closely <strong>with</strong> the Social Work Family Support Service <strong>and</strong><br />
Family Support Centres provide a range <strong>of</strong> support to young children <strong>with</strong> additional support<br />
needs <strong>of</strong>ten in partnership <strong>with</strong> education services.<br />
The Pre School Home Visiting Service <strong>of</strong>fers home based support to children from birth to 5<br />
<strong>and</strong> their families as soon as a problem has been identified <strong>and</strong> parents are seeking support.<br />
This service also supports children as they move into a nursery placement <strong>and</strong> ensures that<br />
in<strong>for</strong>mation is shared appropriately to ease the transition process.<br />
The Childcare <strong>In<strong>for</strong>mation</strong> Service provides parents <strong>and</strong> carers <strong>with</strong> the in<strong>for</strong>mation they<br />
need to make the best choice about the care <strong>and</strong> education <strong>of</strong> their children. Contact our<br />
