SOME USEFUL DEFINITIONS<br />

Audiologist: Measures your child's hearing. Will see you either at<br />

Ninewells Hospital or at a local clinic.<br />

Clinical Psychologist: Specialises in helping children who have difficulties <strong>with</strong><br />

their behaviour <strong>and</strong>/or relationships <strong>with</strong> other people.<br />

Cardiologist: A doctor who specialises in looking after children's hearts.<br />

Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon: A doctor who specialises in operating on children's hearts.<br />

Dietician: Helps <strong>with</strong> all sorts <strong>of</strong> feeding <strong>and</strong> nutritional problems.<br />

May see you at Ninewells Hospital or at a local clinic.<br />

Educational Psychologist: Assesses your child <strong>and</strong> gives advice on educational<br />

needs, possible Nursery <strong>and</strong> School options. Can advise<br />

on how to help your child at home.<br />

Endocrinologist A specialist doctor dealing <strong>with</strong> variations <strong>of</strong> physical<br />

growth <strong>and</strong> disorders <strong>of</strong> the endocrine gl<strong>and</strong>s (producing<br />

hormones).<br />

Geneticist: A specialist doctor who studies the genes (inherited cells)<br />

that are passed on through families.<br />

Neurologist: A specialist doctor who works <strong>with</strong> patients <strong>with</strong> problems<br />

affecting the brain's functioning.<br />

Opthalmologist: A specialist eye doctor.<br />

Orthoptist : Works <strong>with</strong> the eye doctor, particularly <strong>with</strong> children <strong>with</strong><br />

eye problems such as squints.<br />

Orthopaedic Surgeon: Specialist doctor who operates on bones.<br />

Orthotist: A person who makes splints, shoe insoles <strong>and</strong> provides<br />

specialist shoes.<br />

Paediatrician: A specialist doctor who works <strong>with</strong> children.<br />

Specialist Nurse: Nurses who have a specialist knowledge in specific<br />

diseases. Often work between hospital <strong>and</strong> community.<br />
