Preface<br />

<strong>Image</strong> processing <strong>and</strong> mathematical morphology have become increasingly<br />

important because digital multimedia, including automated vision detection<br />

<strong>and</strong> inspection <strong>and</strong> object recognition, are widely used today. For the purposes<br />

of image analysis <strong>and</strong> pattern recognition, one often transforms an image<br />

into another better represented form. <strong>Image</strong>-processing techniques have<br />

been developed tremendously during the past fi ve decades <strong>and</strong> among them,<br />

mathematical morphology has always received a great deal of attention<br />

because it provides a quantitative description of geometric structure <strong>and</strong><br />

shape as well as a mathematical description of algebra, topology, probability,<br />

<strong>and</strong> integral geometry.<br />

<strong>Mathematical</strong> morphology denotes a branch of biology that deals with the<br />

forms <strong>and</strong> structures of animals <strong>and</strong> plants. It aims at analyzing the shapes<br />

<strong>and</strong> forms of objects. In computer imaging, it has been used as a tool for<br />

extracting image components that are useful in the representation <strong>and</strong><br />

description of object shapes. It is mathematical in the sense that the analysis<br />

is based on set theory, topology, lattice algebra, function, <strong>and</strong> so on.<br />

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the different aspects<br />

of morphological mechanisms <strong>and</strong> techniques. It is written for students,<br />
