SIMULTANEOUS CERVICAL AND LUMBAR SURGERY FOR TANDEM SPINAL<br />

STENOSIS IN ELDERLY PATIENTS<br />

Introduction: Spinal stenosis is common in the elderly and sometimes involves the<br />

cervical and lumbar spine as tandem spinal stenosis (TSS). Safety and outcomes of<br />

simultaneous surgery for patients >70 years with symptomatic TSS were examined.<br />

Methods: Subjects comprised 17 patients with TSS (TSS group; mean age, 75.9<br />

years) who underwent cervical laminoplasty. In the lumbar spine, laminectomy (n=10)<br />

and decompression with fusion (n=7) were performed. Operation time, blood loss,<br />

Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, grasp strength, 10-s finger flexionextension<br />

test (10-s test), complications, hospitalization, use of analgesics,<br />

hemoglobin, CPK and CRP levels were examined. Comparisons were made with 17<br />

controls treated using cervical laminoplasty alone. Results: Mean operation time was<br />

84.3 min (cervical) and 87.4 min (lumbar) for the TSS group and 98.4 min for controls<br />
