DOES SALTER'S OSTEOTOMY RETROVERT THE ACETABULUM IN
DEVELOPMENTAL DYSPLASIA OF HIP?
Aditya MOOTHA, Raghav SAINI
PGIMER, Chandigarh (INDIA)
Salter’s osteotomy had been condemned in the past for the retroversion of the
acetabulum, when it is used in the patients with developemental dysplasia of hip.
These studies were based upon the indirect measurement of the acetabulum
anteversion on radiographs rather than the actual measurement. Acetabulum
retroversion is blamed for the acetabular impingement and early onset of
degeneration. Study included the 45 children with unilateral developmental dysplasia
of hip and MRI was done to document the pre-operative acetabular anteversion.
Open reduction and Salter’s osteotomy was done in all the patients. Post-opertative
MRI was done in all the patients to document the post-operative acetabular
anteverion.None of our patient had post-operative dislocation and all children were
walking without limp at the follow up. Statistical analysis was done and there was no
statistical significant difference between the pre-operative and post-operative values
of acetabular anteversion. Salters’s osteotomy should be used without any fear for
the retroversion of the acetabulum. Salter’s osteotomy corrects the pathoanatomy of
DDH in addition to the providing post-operative stability.
