THE INFLUENCE OF THE SHELF AGEING OF GAMMA-IRRADIATION<br />

STERILIZED ULTRA-HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYETHYLENE IN BIPOLAR<br />

HEMIARTHROPATHY FOR HIP OSTEOARTHRITIS<br />

This study aimed to elucidate the relationship among the shelf ageing of gammairradiation<br />

sterilized ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and the<br />

acetabular change and the migration of bipolar head in bipolar hemiarthropathy for<br />

hip osteoarthritis. 43 consecutive patients underwent bipolar hemiarthropathy for hip<br />

osteoarthritis with IBC (3M). Their mean age was 60.2 years. The mean body height<br />

was 149.7cm and their mean body weight was 53.1kg. The mean follow-up period<br />

was 96 months. Fifteen hips were revised. The patients were classified into 2 groups<br />

- SDS group (short duration stored group, < 30 months) or LDS group (long duration<br />

stored group, 30 months) - on the basis of the duration from gamma-irradiation<br />

sterilized UHMWPE to use. The following parameters were analyzed, body weight,<br />

the size of outer head, the thickness of UHMWPE, the appearance of osteolysis and<br />

the migration distance of bipolar head. The mean migration distance of bipolar head<br />
