ACTINOMYLOSIS OF BONE AND SOFT TISSUE: A REPORT ON 10 PATIENTS
AND REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Actinomycosis is a non communicable, chronically suppurative, and uncommonly
diagnosed human disease.The potentially pathogenic organisms are ubiquitous in
soil and are part of the flora of the mouth. The difficulty in diagnosing the disease
might be due to the lack of familiarity with this disease.The article discusses ten
patients, presented very late, with diffuse infiltration of bone and soft tissue. Nine
were in the foot and one case in the foot and one case in the middle 1/3 of the
tibia.The diagnosis was confirmed on clinical, bacteriological and histopathological
examination, antibiotic were useful but was not curative. All end up with below knee
amputation.This paper confirms the importance of clinical awareness in the initial
stage of disease so that amputation may be avoided.
