A Orthopaedic Clinic-General Hospital Kilkis, Thessaloniki (GREECE)
The aim of our work is to present our experience in treating 9 patients with synovial
chondromatosis,a rare entity in Orthopeadics. In the period 1997-2007 5 patients with
synovial chondromatosis of the knee, 3 patients with infrapatellar bursal
chondromatosis and 1 patient with hip chondromatosis were treated in our clinic. Five
of them were males and four females. The age of the patients ranged between 31-62
years with an average of 42 years. The cause was repeat minor trauma in 5 patients
while no apparent cause was found in the remaining four. The main clinical
symptoms were joint swelling and pain in 5 patients, mild discomfort in the affected
joint in 2 patients and no symptoms (accidental finding) in 2 patients. Six of the
patients were submitted in open joint debridment two in arthroscopic removal of
osteochondral bodies and one in total knee arthroplasty due to osteoarthritis .During
follow up (1-10 years) we had no complications or transformation. The radiological
and clinical results were satisfactory without recurrence and pain. The function of the
joint was good with full range of motion. Please to be accepted as a poster
