The relief of pain and the restoration of functional activities are the main outcomes of<br />

primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Most<br />

arthroplasty outcome measures do not take postoperative pain into account. To<br />

document if the prospective pain experience following TKA correlates with subjective<br />

pain-specific questionnaires for preoperative and postoperative pain and is predictive<br />

for long-term pain outcomes.30 patients with a primary diagnosis of osteoarthritis of<br />

the knee, who were scheduled to undergo TKA, were asked to fill out the McGill Pain<br />

Questionnaire (MPQ) preoperatively and at three, 6 and 12 months follow-up. The<br />

overall response rate (return of completed questionnaires) was 80%. There was a<br />
