This will be the only collection funded by Apple but the new
Commonwealth Scheme will commence shortly although it is unclear
when it may reach Tasmania. The three Regional Waste Groups
have agreed to meet in the near future to discuss a uniform state
wide implementation of the scheme as SWSA is already receiving
approaches from commercial enterprises (suppliers of collection
services) regarding future collections.
� The “Groundswell” composting trial is progressing well at Barretta
(Kingborough). The VRM inoculant has been purchased and the
current site is being cleared of existing composting heaps. SWSA
will continue to work closely with Kingborough Council to progress
the trial to its conclusion.
2.2 Governance
� The Waste Advisory Committee met in February and the final
minutes have not as yet been made available. The minutes will be
distributed to Councils when available. WAC has decided to convene
a workshop of participants in the waste industry to commence the
review of the State Waste and Resources Management Strategy as
well as plan for future initiates in Waste Management. The date of
the next meeting has not yet been set but it is envisaged it will take
place early in the new financial year.
� The mooted State mandated Waste Levy discussions progress;
Alan Garcia (LGAT) has held preliminary discussions with State
Representatives using the Blue Environment discussion paper as a
basis.
It is anticipated that a final proposition if one can be reached will be
considered by the July General Meeting of LGAT.
In the meantime the Chairman and CEO will endeavour to visit all
Members as soon as there is a firm proposition to explain the details
of the proposals to elected members around late May/early June.
� The Board last year decided to seek cheaper options regarding the
preparation of the Financial Statements for 2011/12. Following some
investigations, it was agreed that the Statements would be produced
internally in 2011/12 which would be the least cost option for SWSA
and that the situation would be reviewed later in the year to
determine the success or otherwise of this alternative.
